Chapter 216: Chapter 216 Dinner Guest
Kiara
In the dining room we are greeted by aunt Abby and Uncle Matthew. They are both smiling, and they seem so happy to see us. But something in their demeanor is slightly off. I wonder what it is, when a young woman walks in behind them. Maze eyes widened to saucers, and then he let go of my hand and rushed to her. He lifts her up in a hug while turning her around in the air.
I feel the air being knocked out of my lungs, and my heart hurting at his actions, but before I can move or say anything the woman slaps him on the back of his face.
"OW! Amber what the fuck?!" Maze shouts, and I can actually breathe air again. It’s his sister. I should have known, but I did not get a good look at her before he had her in his arms. freёwebnovel.com
"You just let go of your poor mate without introducing us, and embraced me. Not only that, but you left her hanging. You are a moron, brother." Ambers scoffs at him, and he scratches his neck in embarrassment. He looks at me, sees the unshed tears and rushes to my side. He embraces me, and whispers apologies in my ear. I know he probably hasn’t seen her in so long, and he misses her - who wouldn’t with a sibling they are close with? But that was a shitty move anyway.
Maze keeps apologizing to me, while I get properly introduced to Queen Amber. I courtesy to her, but both her and Maze yelled at me for doing so. So loud I almost fell over.
"Oh uhm. Sorry." I answer awkwardly, but Queen Amber and Maze both laugh. They start talking over each other, and I can’t hear a thing. Abby scolds them for being annoying brats, and I can’t help but giggle at their antics. Maze takes a breath, sticks his tongue out at his mother, and explains to me.
"Baby, you are Amber’s equal. You are my mate and the future Queen of werewolves, so you don’t have to do all the formal stuff. You also just address her as Amber. She’ll probably try and kill you if you do anything else." Amber nods, sitting in a chair opposite me at the table.
"True story. I hate the titles and formalities." She says, as Maze asks about her family. She tells us they are still at the dragon lands. freēwēbnovel.com
"I have never seen a dragon." I say, just to be in the conversation. Omegas are serving us dinner, and it’s a bit awkward to sit here while others are doing everything. I am used to doing everything myself and only being me, so being here with these people. It’s going to take time to get used to.
"Oh, you will when you meet my mates."
"Wait. Mates, as in plural?" I ask, not believing my own ears.
"Yeah, I have two. Chase and Blaze." I gape at her.
"Wow, how do you handle that? I think it’s enough with one." Amber laughs with her parents, while Maze scoffs in mock anger. I kiss his cheek. "Wouldn’t trade you for anything by the way." I added, and he smiled so big.
We all get food on our plates and for a time the only thing you can hear is people munching on food, and cutlery against plates. And occasionally glass against the table.
"So, Kiara. My brother tells me you are not a wolf shifter, which I gathered myself, but I’m curious as to what shifter you are?" Amber asks, and everyone goes quiet. I swallow my food, not knowing how to answer her question. Maze and his parents have been so sweet so far, and he took it well meeting Winter, but will his sister be as understanding as them? I am not sure. I have been reminded to not tell my dark secret to anyone all my life, ever since my parents discovered my animal’s true form.
"Oh, uhm. Well, that is not very exciting to talk about. I would rather hear how you met your mates?" I say, avoiding her gaze and trying my best to sound casual. Amber purses her lips, lifting an eyebrow.
"You better tell her, baby. She will just use her powers and draw out Winter to get some answers." Amber pales at the mention of my fox’s name. Aunt Abby and Uncle Matthew do the same, all of them just staring at me, making me blush and feel like a deer in a headlight. Maze rolls his eyes at his family. "Winter came to Kiara and transformed to be with her and Ash’s mate once again. I figured Selene wanted to redeem the mistake it was to make her the counterpart of Mira." Amber looks at Maze strangely, before turning her eyes on me yet again.
"And what form did she take?" She asks, and I can feel how I cannot talk my way out of this one.
"She is a fox." Amber just stares at me.
"Did you say fox?" She asks, and I nod. I have no idea what the hell is going on in her mind, but just as I think she is not going to say anything else, she kicks Maze under the table. "You almost lost out on one of the rarest and strongest mates in the realm because you would rather be a broody asshat?! I should so kill you right now." I raise my hands, waving at the seething woman.
"I would really like it if you don’t kill him, please." I say, as Amber laughs.
"Well, it seems like he actually turned around, doesn’t it?" I look at her with confusion, but Maze mind-links me with an explanation and I nod to Amber. "I’m glad someone could knock some sense into his thick head at least. You are a gem, Kiara. I’m very happy he has found you at last." I have no idea how to respond to something so kind. She just found out I am a fox shifter, and her only reaction was to kick Maze’s ass for almost losing me. The world has truly turned upside down.
The conversation continues with embarrassing stories about Maze and Amber from their childhood. I laugh and eat and drink, carefree and happy into my soul for the first time in forever. I have not felt this at home anywhere since early childhood. Some people may feel sorry for themselves at the thought, but instead I feel blessed the Goddesses chose me to be here. Choose a mate who is proving to be loving, a little spontaneous, but kind and caring. He is everything I ever dreamed of in a mate, although he tries to hide it from the world. It’s something I’ll have to teach him to be proud of. I think he feels it as a weakness, but it is truly a strength. A good and powerful leader is someone who cares about his pack, and his people. And Maze is not only an Alpha. He is the King. It hits me like a ton of bricks. I’m mated to the Kind. Fuck!
"Uhm, I have a question for the room." I say when there is pause in the family talk, and all eyes are on me, again. I swallow.
"How can I be Queen when I am not a wolf?" I ask, feeling the anxiety in my stomach like a tight ball of fear.
"Same way I’m Queen of Dragons without being a dragon. You are you, Kiara. You are mated to the King, ergo you are the future Queen. Wolf or not. It might actually be an advantage that you are not."
"How come?"
"You see things differently. You are not like the wolves, and even though you grew up in a pack, you are still not the same species and your fox will have other instincts and thoughts on different subjects." I nod. I know what she is saying, but I still have my doubts.
"Will people accept a non wolf?"
"Some will never accept you, while others can be convinced. Some again will love you dearly. Like your family here." She gestures to all of them, and I feel tears in my eyes again. I’ve always only had my parents. And now? Now I have a lot of people on my side. Most importantly my mate. "I will always be here to help guide you through it. Goddess knows I’ve been through it myself. You’ll have to accept that not everyone will like you and rely on your village to help you." I thank her for her kind words, and the others repeat what she said. Especially Maze made a great deal out of what an amazing Queen I’ll be.
When we go our own way half an hour later, I am feeling better. They are so sweet, and Amber seems so fierce at the same time. She is a sweetheart inside, and very protective of her family. Her eyes kept switching between hers and her animals when Maze told everyone about Mira being alive after all. To say they were all outraged is an understatement, and Amber said she’s going to kill Mira personally if she ever tries something with Maze and I.
Back in our room we sit down on the couch to talk some more. We have done this a lot today, and I feel more and more close to him. He apologizes once again for earlier, which I brush off. He was excited to see his sister. I get that.
It’s very late when we decide to go to bed. Butterflies doing backflips at the prospect of spending the night with my mate for the first time.
