Chapter 200: Chapter 200 I Do Not Want a Mate. Or Do I?

Maze

The day is sunny and kind of warm. I look outside to see pack members going about their day and greeting each other with cheerful voices. It’s like nothing ever happened, but somehow everything feels like yesterday for me. I know time has moved, and the death of my mate happened almost 2 years ago, but the pain never went away. It dulled but is still very evident in everything I do. Whenever I see a happy couple, or someone in the pack greets a new little pup, those wounds open all over again. I do not know how to stop it, or how to get over it. frёewebηovel.cѳm

I know I’ve been a grumpy Alpha lately, but what the fuck did they expect of me? I can’t just be cheerful when the one thing that should have made me whole just went away in my arms. I held my Mira Rose when she died, and my heart died that day with her.

I know mom, dad and Amber think it’s suspicious that she was there the day the rogues and demons attacked the pack, but I fully believe she was just coming back and got caught up in the fray of everything. She would never do anything to hurt me or anyone in the pack. She was a member here. Ranked even. Her parents took her death almost as hard as me, but I felt it more than anyone. The place where I feel my heartbeat is empty. It feels hollow every time I feel it drum another beat to pump around the blood in my body.

Today is the day when Uncle Benjamin and Aunt Sami are coming to visit. Their daughter needs a breather from their pack, and mom said yes for her to be staying here for the time being. She just told me in a matter of fact sort of way, and said that if I was not going to be a good Alpha to the pack, then she and dad were coming out of retirement and taking over. Like hell, I would ever allow them to take my title away. I have heard of the whispers of unhappy pack members thinking of getting me demoted, but that will never happen. Mom got rid of the lousy council, so I am it. The day Amber appointed me King was the day the unhappy voices became silent. I chuckle a little. They have it coming. They are always ready to complain and mock, but none of them knows what the pain is like. None of them knows the feeling of your heart beating, but there is no love left in it. They know nothing of the constant heartache I feel.

There’s a knock on the door ripping me from my gloomy thoughts.

"Maze, I know you are up. Open the door." Mom’s voice cuts through the silence, and when I do not move the door flies open by itself. Like damn mom, respect I do not want to speak to you. "You need to get ready, young man. Our guests are 5 minutes from here, and you are not even ready." I roll my eyes.

"Did you forget in all your wisdom that I did not invite them here?" I ask, crossing my arms. The slap to my face is sharp and precise.

"Change! Maybe Benjamin can get some sense into your thick head." She turns to go, but turns around again when I do not move a muscle. "Do you really wanna test me, boy?" I roll my eyes, going to my changing room. I hear the door to my room slam shut, and I take my time getting changed.

I do not understand her need to have me socialize. I have been doing a fairly good job as Alpha and King from here. I do my duties and I meet with people when it is absolutely necessary, but I do not do the whole ’chummy and friendly’ thing anymore. Not since what happened.

Havoc growls at me. He is not agreeing with the way I do things anymore. We have basically been at odds ever since Mira died. Even though he also hurt back then, he was much quicker than I to move on. He said he needed to believe this was not the end of our story with a mate, where I do not fucking want another mate. Not even if she was the Goddess herself. I do NOT want another mate!

’The Goddess will give us another mate when she sees fit, dude. You know she will, and you’ll have to suck it up or she will come back with a vengeance.’

’Seriously?! What is it with you? We don’t need a whimpering woman. She will never live up to our late mate and you know it.’

’Where the fuck do you know that from? She ran away over a misunderstanding, and we never had anything with her! She was gone and lost to us way before you ever realized it, Maze. She’s never been what you made her out to be.’ I snub him to the back of my mind. When he is speaking like an idiot like now, I do not want to argue with him. He’ll never understand because he never knew her. He wasn’t here when we were growing up, even though my connection with him was stronger than most because I could change forms from infant, he didn’t know her. He didn’t play with her, hang out with her or laugh himself silly. He never saw her eyes shine in the moonlight by the fire on the warm summer evenings, or admire her body when we went swimming.

I walk out of my room just as mom yells at me in a mind-link. I tell her I am on my way, and to chill the hell out. What the fuck is her problem anyway?!

I reminisce some more on my way to the private dining room, but when I get closer a scent invades my senses and I freeze in my steps. No, no, no. This can’t be happening. Why would Selene do this to me?! I have prayed for her to bring back Mira, but if she wouldn’t do that for me, to leave me alone in life. This scent is definitely not Mira, and I have a strong urge to both run in there and claim her right now so she can’t run, or run away and never come back.

Havoc forces me to put a foot in front of the other and walk in there. I look at my parents, the scowl deeper than ever. I need to get out of here before I do something I’ll regret. ƒreewebηoveℓ.com

"Ah! Maze. Finally! You remember uncle Ben and aunt Sami?!" Mom says with a smile, totally ignoring the warning signs on my face. I turn to nod at my family, but someone behind them catches my eyes, and my heart stops for a second before starting up again with more force than before. FUCK! The creature behind them is out of this world and even Mira can’t compare to her effortless beauty.

"Hello uncle, aunt." I grit out, my eyes never leaving the girl behind them. She is hiding herself which I absolutely hate. I just want to pull her out from her hiding spot and flaunt her to everyone who will listen. I can see her flawless olive skin and two almond shaped caramel eyes peeking out from behind them. I am fighting with myself not to knock them over to get to her.

"Maze! You got so big!" Aunt Sami says with a smile, trying to hide her nervousness. "We brought our daughter Kiara, but she is a little shy." She apologizes. They move and I forget how to put air into my lunges. In front of me is the Goddess incarnated, and I take back my words. She. Is. Fucking. Perfect! Her legs are long, she has curves and her hair falls down her shoulders in big waves. Her hair matches her eyes with their caramel color, and I just stare at her. When her eyes meet mine I feel all the ordinary strings tying me to this world disappear, and she is the only thing keeping me grounded.

"Hello, Alpha Maze." Her voice is light and sounds like the sweetest music, but something snaps me back to reality. What am I doing? She can’t be my mate. I don’t want a mate.

Instead of answering her I turn on my heel and flee the room. I hear an "Oh my, did I say something wrong?" And it takes everything in me to not storm in there and take her in my arms and mark her on the spot.

I need to speak to my sister.
