Chapter 199: Chapter 199 His Unexpected Queen
In the dead of night, a woman is looking out onto the clear starry sky. She is beautiful with those big eyes, but the warmth that once filled them has long gone.
She left her pack because she felt her heart break when another woman kissed her mate. Granted, she was the one who dared her to do it, knowing full well who he was to her, but she needed to be sure of his feelings for her. She heard him chase her, but then it was too late. She had already seen him not push the other woman away fast enough, and her heart froze. She fled.
It’s been over a year, and in that time she has travelled far and wide, keeping in contact with her parents, but never revealing where she is. She knows they will try and force her to go home. To accept the man she loves more than anything, but whom she does not trust with her heart.
Something shifted along the way. She met him. She knew he was dangerous, but she couldn’t help it. She fell in love. They fell in love. Or so she kept telling herself.
"Mira. What are you doing, love?" A deep voice grumbles behind her. She knew he would be unhappy to wake in the bed without her, but she felt a sudden urge to see the moon in the sky.
"Nothing important. Just had the sudden urge to view the moon in the sky, I guess." She shrugs her shoulders, feeling him walk up behind her. He wraps his arms around her, pulling her close to his ice cold chest.
"And why would you feel that urge? I thought your wolf died?" She shrugs again. She has not heard a word from her wolf ever since the day she met Magoth.
"Well, I don’t feel her anymore, if that’s what you mean." She answers, feeling the smallest twinge of sadness with that statement. It’s not enough to actually touch her, but it is there.
"Well, come on. We need to sleep tonight if we want the plan to succeed tomorrow."
"You’re sure they are not there?"
"Positive. Now come on back to bed, pet." ƒreewebηoveℓ.com
Mira follows Magoth back to bed, but her brain won’t shut off. Her thoughts go a mile a minute, and suddenly she’s feeling even the slightest ounce of regret for what she is about to venture into.
Magoth needs her to do a special task tomorrow. Go back to the pack and claim her rightful place as Luna. This will be so much easier with Maze out of the pack because by the time he is back, she will be fully integrated and the mate bond will force him to accept her. The plan is foolproof, but something about it still leaves a little bad taste in her mouth. She is having some second thoughts, but the prospect of not doing this and getting killed is so very real she has no other choice than to do it.
In another realm, Selene is looking down into her water mirror. It shows her the realm of her children, and when her eyes fall on the young woman standing under the moon, her mouth turns into a frown. She was given everything in life. Parents who loved her, a pack who accepted and loved her and a mate who from childhood worshipped the ground she walked on. What more could she need?
Selene realized too late that the woman she herself had chosen as Maze’s Queen and mate was mentally unstable to the point where she had to retract her wolf. Now that wolf is lying beside her looking down on the human she should have been living with. Her eyes follow the movement when the demon walks up behind Mira. They cannot hear what they are saying, but they both know it can’t be good.
’We’ll need to warn Maze, Mother.’ The wolf says in her mind. She gives her a sad look, shaking her beautiful head.
"We can’t interfere, Winter. We need to let this play out the way the Faiths want it to. She altered her Path, and she is the one to redeem what she did."
’What if she can’t?’
"Then she has sealed herself to an untimely death. I’m sorry, child. But I do have some good news." Winter turns her massive wolf head.
"And that is?"
"You are going back. I have a new human for you, and she needs your guidance more than ever."
’But I thought a wolf had to wait for a certain amount of time before going back.’ Selene nods, just as they hear footsteps behind them. Winter turns around with Selene, and the Goddess puts her hand on the wolf’s head.
"Inari. It is good to see you sister." The other woman smiles, her eyes landing on the wolf.
"This is her?" Selene nods. Winter looks between the Goddesses, confusion swirling in every inch of her being.
’What is going on?’ Selene bends down in front of Winter.
"We are giving you a second chance, my darling. You are so pure in your heart, Inari and I agreed it would be best to let you come back. Mira’s faults are not yours, so this is my way to apologize." Winter nods, still not quite sure what is going on. She knows Inari is the Goddess of the Fox shifters, but more than that? She doesn’t.
Suddenly a figure walks out behind Inari. It turns into two figures. A fox and a gorgeous olive skinned girl. She looks around, her eyebrows knitting together. She puts her hand on the fox, whispering something to it. The fox shakes its head and the girl looks sad for a second before straightening up.
"Winter, please meet Arina and Kiara. You are going to switch places with Arina, and Kiara is your new human counterpart."
’But she’s a fox shifter?’
"So are you." Inari smiles as the former wolf stares down at herself. Her body has changed into a fox, and when she looks back her backside has five tails. Her fur is ice blue, and the tail tips are shiny silver.
’Will she accept me?’ Winter doesn’t know this girl, but by the looks of it, she is really close to her current counterpart.
"Kiara has known for some time that Arina was there as a temporary friend. We have been planning this ever since I discovered just how unstable Mira was. We agreed when I pulled you out that you were going to her. We knew she would be powerful, just not quite how much."
Winter walks to the girl, as Arina moves away. Kiara looks at her with wide eyes.
"You’re beautiful." She says, her voice in awe at the sight before her.
She had been visited by Inari when she shifted for the first time a little over a year ago. She was a late shifter, and for some time both she and her parents thought she would be wolfless. Well, she is. She is not a wolf. She’s a fox. It came as a great, and somewhat disappointing, surprise for her parents. But they tried to support her no matter what. The pack though had a very hard time with her, so she opted to stay on her own outside pack lands.
’I am honoured to be your counterpart, Kiara.’ Winter bows her head as the girl smiles. She can sense the goodness inside her, and how pure her heart is. Both fox and girl have been through a lot in their short time in life, and they both need to heal. Selene and Inari know this, and silently agree to keep a close eye on the pair.
Somewhere in the Kingdom of Dragons, a King is sleeping. His dreams are fitful and his heart is heavy. He misses the mate he never got to know, and he has no idea just how close he is to meeting her and losing her forever, for if something is certain it’s that the Faiths take their role seriously and they do not accept the kind of betrayals of one’s Path as Mira showed. She sealed not only her own Path but one of the only people she has ever felt anything other than contempt for - Maze.
Maze however does not know that he is just a short time away from meeting His Unexpected Queen.
