Chapter 116: Chapter 116 Surprise Visit
Amber’s POV
Tossing and turning in my bed, I look at the ceiling annoyed. The day has been interesting, to say the least, and I have a distinct feeling of not belonging. Some people were friendly enough, then there were some who seemed indifferent and then there were those who were just plain hostile, mean, and hateful. I decide to get out of bed seeing as I can’t sleep anyway. I open the door to my balcony, take a blanket and sit outside breathing in the fresh air.
Thinking about the various reactions to my own person, makes me think back on the day I’ve had since I was literally dumped on the dragon lands.
Callus seemed more indifferent at dinner, but he didn’t engage in conversation. He even went so far as to ask Chase to ask me a question as if I was not there, and then not to hear my answer so Chase had to relay it again. Let’s just say, it got old really fast and only fueled the ones who showed open hostility to be even more unfriendly.
After dinner, Chase showed me around the castle and the garden behind it.
"We are having a festival soon - to celebrate the sun and moon being in the sky at the same time. We are the people of the sun and fire and you are born of the moon. Some say it’s a sign of our union being condoned by the gods, and others say it’s a bad omen - that the moon goddess seeks to take over our people and leads us into a dark night with no moonlight or stars to guide us." Chase looks at me for a reaction, and I shrug my shoulders.
"What do you think?" I ask, wondering why he is telling me this.
"Solei is the mother of Selene and her siblings. I think it is her way to reach out to her daughter and tell her she condones the union Selene chose." Chase says with a thoughtful glint in his eyes.
I take a blanket from the bed, putting it around my shoulders, and open the balcony door. The air is a bit chilly, but nothing too serious. I sit down in one of the chairs out there and turn my face towards the sky. Far over my head the stars and moon shine upon me, and I sigh. At times like these, I miss home the most. ’Ignis, are you awake?’ I ask, uncertain. She’s been awfully quiet since we landed in the dragon lands, and I find myself lonely without her constant blabbing.
’Not if you’re just here to insult me.’ Ignis answers with a sulk. I chuckle, relief coursing through me at her answer.
’Sorry. What do you think about all of this? I feel like I’m missing something. Something important. On one hand, I feel... Free. On the other hand, I feel ominous. Like something is coming. Not sure if it makes sense?’ I ramble my jumbled thoughts out to her. She is the only one I can really trust here. The only one I know is absolutely, without a doubt, on my side.
’I feel this too. I think I know what - or rather who is coming but I cannot be certain before they arrive. If it is not that, then I have been mistaken in my feelings.’ She answers vaguely. I hate when she speaks in riddles. Like arguing with me about the title of ’princess’ or ’queen’. I turn my face towards the night sky once again.
"It’s a pretty view, huh?" A female asks beside me. I almost jump out of my skin inwardly, but show no sign of surprise outside.
"It really is. If only the mother of the moon and stars would not peek into her children’s inner thoughts like a stalker." I answer, looking right into the eternal depths of Selen’s endless eyes. Selene laughs.
"Always was a rude little thing. Anyway, I’m here to answer some of your questions and then I’m off to annoy one of my dear sisters before she gets news of our mutual friend’s journey." I raise an eyebrow at this. Mutual friends?
"You speak in even bigger riddles than Ignis, Selene. Why can’t you just be direct with me for once?" I ask, shaking my head in exasperation. Her mouth twists upwards in the smallest of smiles, before raising her hand. In there is a little ball of silver light. From it, I hear the voices of the people I know and love - my parents. ƒreeωebnovel.ƈom
"I can’t believe you, Abby! How could you do that to our daughter?" My father says in an angry voice. I have never heard him remotely like this in all of my 18 years. And they are arguing about... Me?
"I was protecting her! She doesn’t have to know. These books should give us the answer." Mother replies with equal anger. She sounds tired, annoyed, and afraid.
"Your Highnesses!" A door slams to the wall, and what I assume is a guard burst into the room. I can just imagine the looks on parents’ faces when they are disturbed in the middle of an argument.
"What is it?" Mother asks in a hurry. Her voice seems even more on edge with the arrival of the guard.
"Miss. Willow and her prince Jax came half an hour ago, announcing she had urgent business with your Highnesses, but then all of a sudden we feel someone teleport away. The teleportation was of a larger party. We became suspicious, and sought out the guest. He’s gone, my queen, along with your sister, the prince, and sigma Ezra." The guard rambles this all in a hurry, his breathing shallow and his voice shaking!
"WHAT?" Mother yells, and the guard screams in pain.
"ABIGAIL WHAT ARE YOU DOING?" Father yells, and the screaming stops abruptly. "He’s gone, and we have to accept that Selene obviously wants Amber to make her own decision. This is out of our hands. She’s the queen, and she will have to learn how to navigate as such." Father states calmly but firmly. Mother sobs uncontrollably.
The voices disappear as I’m looking into the thin air where Selene sat a second ago. The impact of my father’s words hit me like a ton of bricks. Ezra and someone unknown are coming for me, but most of all. I’m the queen?! Why hadn’t I felt different if I’m the queen? As if the power was just waiting to be asked, they course through my entire body - every cell feels like they are electric. Ignis howls in my head. The howl of a queen’s wolf, pride, and pain combined into something powerful!
