Chapter 8: "Too early for animals..."

He also learnt of the existence of a new ranking, the star ranking. This was different from the common rank he saw on chests, animals and items.

All the way back, his mind alternated between potions, the new ranking criteria and on any weird herb and plant he came along, trying his hand at finding the remaining two ingredients of the healing potion, but all was in vein.

"While, its not everyday that we get what we want..."

Leo comforted himself as he moved aside the thickets he had used to cover up the entrance.

Inside,he took out ten pieces of meat and several bunches of purple berries, crushed them and smeared the juices on the meat, leaving it an hour for the juices to evenly sip through the meat.

His plan was quite simple, since the inventory kept the meat fresh and he was about to embark on digging the trench,it would be wise to prepare the food prepared early as it would save him quite a lot of time. Time that he would spend on the trench.

As he waited for the meat,he embarked on carving the hoe’s final part.

He found a broad stone and chipped at it into a thing square shape, before carefully making a hole on one end. The hole was slightly the same size as the carved branch handle he had made earlier.

He fixed the handle to the stone part and used a few vines to firmly hold the two pieces together.

System Alert: You have crafted a rudimentary hoe.

System Alert: You have received fifty experience points.

"Finally...."

Leo stretched a bit before trying out the hoe.

"The edge needs a little sharpening..."

He observed the only fault with his work.

"But that’s work for later..."

His stomach had started rumbling, and it was already late noon. The carving had taken longer than he had planned.

For the rest of the afternoon,he spent his time roasting meat and the remaining potatoes.

With two small jars of water,he held nothing back while it came to the red berries juice, though he would have preferred some goat milk tea,he had neither pot not tea leaves.

"One more tool..."

He was only a tool away from completing the crafter class second chain quest.

"The blade should be at least a foot and a half longer, but not so heavy that I would struggled swinging it,or so light..."

Leo started planning on the blades design as he munched on his meal, which had turned out better than his first try. The purple berries sour juices had evenly sipped into the meat.

He had added more dry roots to the fire when dusk approached, before finding a perfect stone for his blade. It took him the best part of the night chipping away at the stone into the perfect blade shape.

Hours later, the system notification he had been waiting for popped up.

System Alert: You have crafted a rudimentary blade.

System Alert: You have received fifty experience points.

"Not bad..."

That was Leo’s evaluation of the blade he had just finished crafting. The blade was a foot and a half long. It was two fingers broad and as straight as a ruler. He had thought of crafting a curved blade, but that would have reduced the stones integrity.

As for the handle,it was just like the knife, cylindrical and wrapped in dry vines for better grasp.

He had sharpened both edges so much that they had a metallic shine on them.

"Five...!"

Leo exclaimed as he found the number of required tools excessive. He tried thinking of five more tools that he could make out of stones,or all he could come up with was a stone hammer,a spear head and an arrow head.

He thought of carving out a spade out of stone, but that would be a lot of work and less viable.

"What about a bowl,or a stone pot..."

Leo wondered if this would be counted.

"Damn...!"

Leo cursed as exhaustion hit him.

"I will deal with that tomorrow..."

Leo decided as he added more branches to the fire and went asleep. The next day,he was woken by the muffled chirping of birds.

"No dream..."

Leo felt disappointed as he stretched to ease the stiffness.

System Alert: You have received a daily quest...

Leo thought as he retrieved a banana from the inventory and gobbled it down with some red berries juice.

"These hides don’t make the best of beds..." fгeewebnovёl.com

Leo rolled out the hides, placed them at a corner, and headed out of the lair for some fresh air.

"Not a bad day for some hard work..."

After breakfast,Leo took his hoe, blade and knife and headed for the stream.

"Too early for animals..."

There were no animals at the stream, which was good as it gave Leo some time to himself.

He picked out the right direction, thankfully, the region around the stream had less trees.

"There..."

Leo picked up the right spot to start digging. It was a stride from the stream.

The stream was about two foot wide and about a foot deep. As for the trench that he planned to dig,it would be a foot wide and a foot deep. This way,the floor of the trench and the stream would be even, but the width would be different.

The difference in width would help preserve the stream natural path. Leo did not want to deprive the forest inhabitants of their source of water.
