Chapter 18: Two hundred copper coins for all that effort..."
Leo ignored the notification as he finished the last pancake.
"Take three pancakes for lunch," he told the boy.
The boy obeyed immediately.
Leo meanwhile stood and stretched his stiff back.
"Time to check the trap."
The words made the boy freeze.
Leo noticed the fear in the child’s eyes and sighed.
"We won’t get close unless it’s safe."
He grabbed his bow and crafted arrows from the night before. Without a quiver yet, he stored the arrows in his inventory.
Then he picked up the newly made spade.
The two stepped outside the lair.
Morning mist still floated between the trees. Birds chirped somewhere in the forest, but the area near Leo’s traps was strangely quiet.
"Too quiet..."
Leo whispered to himself as he slowed his pace.
"Stay behind me..."
He whispered to the boy.
The boy nodded as he quietly moved behind Leo,his trembling hand going for the stone knife strapped at his waist belt.
They walked cautiously for nearly twenty minutes before the pitfall trap came into view.
Leo stopped immediately.
"Blood..!"
There was blood everywhere around the trap.
The ground was torn apart with deep claw marks.
Leo slowly approached the edge while keeping his bow ready.
He peered down.
His eyes widened.
"Is that a wolf...!"
At the bottom of the pit lay a massive wolf-like creature, its body pierced by several sharpened stakes.
But it was not dead.
"Growl...!"
The wolf let out a weak growl as it picked up Leo’s scent.
"Activate inspect..."
Leo murmered as he retrieved and knocked an arrow, ready to shoot.

He said as he looked around for he had earlier on received two notifications.
"This explains one notification..."
"But where was the second creature?"
And as if answering his thoughts, a deep growl echoed behind him.
"Grrrrrr...!"
Leo’s body froze. Behind him,the boy froze and Leo could clearly hear the boy’s bones rattling from fear.
Slowly, he turned around,as he pushed the boy behind him, acting as his shield.
Ten meters away stood another creature.
"How am I going to fight against that...!"
Leo was a little bit frightened but not scared.
The forest fire wolf glaring menacely at them was larger than the wolf in the pit. Its fur was dark grey, almost black, and one of Leo’s trap stakes was still lodged deep in its shoulder.
Its pitch dark eyes burned with rage.
"Inspect..."
Leo murmered as he slowly stepped back, pushing the boy further behind.

The wolf bared its long fangs.
The boy whimpered behind Leo.
Leo slowly raised his bow.
"Don’t move..!"
He whispered as his mind raced.
A level two uncommon creature was far stronger than anything he had hunted before.
But the wolf was injured.
That was his only advantage.
"I can do this..."
Leo took a deep breath. free𝑤ebnovel.com
His fingers tightened around the bowstring.
"Let’s see if luck is on my side..."
He said as he let loose the arrow
"Twang...!"
The arrow flew like a streak of lightning.
It struck the wolf directly in the chest.

The wolf howled in pain but did not fall.
Instead,it charged.
"Run...!"
Leo shouted.
The boy sprinted toward the trees while Leo quickly grabbed another arrow.
The ground shook as the massive wolf closed the distance.
"Hell...!"
Leo cursed as he moved closer to the pitfall. As for the boy,Gemini,he had already sprinted a full ten metres by the moment Leo let go of the arrow.
"Five meters..."
Leo waited for the forest wolf to cover the distance before he released the second arrow.
"Thud...!"
At such a close range, his aim was perfect as he pierced the wolf’s eye. It was the only spot that his rudimentary arrow could strike dipper.
System Alert: Critical damage!
"Take that...!"
The creature staggered,as Leo turned and jumped over the pitfall as he retrieved a third arrow from the inventory.
"At such a time,an iron head arrow would be much of a welcome..."
Leo pondered,as he shot the arrow, piercing the forest dire wolf’s leg, before it could regain it balance.

"Time to end this..."

"Come on...!"
The wolf lunged, jumping over the pitfall, with not just an arrow stuck on its chest, but also one on its left front limb and one on its eye,not forgetting the sharp wooden stake.
"Uncommon beast..."
Leo sighed,as he was amazed by the resilience of the beast.
He counted to five before rolling to the side just as the creature slammed into the ground where he had stood.
And before it could recover, Leo jumped forward and drove the stone knife deep into its neck.
Warm blood burst out.
The wolf thrashed violently.
Leo held on with everything he had.
"Die already...!"
He shouted.
Seconds later the creature stopped moving.
For a minute silence returned to the forest,as if marking the death of the dore wolf.
As for Leo he collapsed beside the corpse, breathing heavily.
"It’s over...!"
He whispered.

System Alert: You have received five thousand experience points.
System Alert: You have received two hundred copper coins.
System Alert: Check inventory for coins.
Leo exhaled slowly.
"Two hundred copper coins for all that effort..."
Leo felt cheated as though the forest dire wolf was critically injured before, which affected it’s battle power,he had still put a lot of effort into it.
"Boy...!"
Leo shouted,as he called out for Gemini.
"That boy can run..."
Leo struggled to sit up as he turned his focus toward the pit.
The injured wolf below was still struggling weakly.
