Chapter 28: Chapter 28 - Smart way to work
"I don’t know anything about the inner workings of the drug Lords but each of them was a powerhouse you don’t want to mess with. I wished they all just died in a ditch!" Jackal muttered.
His face was bright red, obviously showing the consumption of alcohol. Unlike his body, it seemed like his liver could support his drinking habit.
The man was quite drunk. In front of him were an empty bottle of whiskey, the hard stuff.
Vincent swallowed from beside, shaking his head.
"Aren’t you afraid that they will hear you and kill you? Ears are everywhere." Vincent asked, pouring a glass of cold water for the man.
Jackal grabbed and thanked him. "Nah, they are all a coward." freewēbnoveℓ.com
He paused and remembered something. "No, not everyone is a coward. There is one drug lord I really like." freewёbnoνel.com
"Tell me about it." Vincent pressed. It was supposed to be Jason’s job to investigate Jackal but the senior detective was lost in his day dream.
"There is a new drug lord coming out from the light. Well, to be precise he came out from the dark. His name is Silas."
"Never heard of him."
"Obviously, I just said he is a new lord. Anyway, he is fair and mostly focuses on targeting the adults."
"The bar is in hell."
"In this world, indeed, the bar is that low." Jackal chuckled.
"But hey, even I have a heart for children. I don’t like anyone messing with children. They have an endless future like us. Seeing some targeting those children disgust me."
Vincent stared at the man’s eyes and nodded. Jackal was telling the truth.
For once, Vincent thought a little better of Jackal. But not much, he was still the scum of the earth, exploiting the body of women.
But, that was the real work. Not everyone’s life was sunshine like him. Vincent sighed.
"Did Silas kill the high school student?" Jason asked from the side, pinching the red tip of the cigarette with his bare fingers.
Vincent flinched at that. Did he have stone skin?
"Oh, so you are aiming for that?" Jackal smiled with a twisted expression.
Vincent smacked him in the back of the head with a fluid motion. "Just answer."
"Gezz." Jackal rubbed his head and glanced at Vincent. Seeing the well developed young man with muscles budging out from the shirt, he lowered back.
He couldn’t overpower him. He couldn’t move faster than him. Even if he could draw out his gun and shoot at Vincent, Jackal knew that his head would be blown out by a man.
A terrifying man called Jason.
So he swallowed the bitter anger and just smiled. "I will talk. I will talk. No need to resort to physical violence."
"I can’t help it, Jackal." Vincent smirked, rubbing his hand. "You have a punchable face. Blame your parents."
"Alright, enough chit chat, my young men." Jason interrupted. "Did that Silas person kill the kid?"
Jackal shook his head. " I don’t know about it. But if I have to take a guess, I don’t think he did."
"Are you a detective?" Jason asked suddenly.
"No."
"Then, fuck your guess. I want to meet with him. Can you arrange it?"
"Hell no. Do you want me to be a fertilizer?"
"I know you can arrange the meeting, Jackal?" Jason said. "You have been living in this life for longer than rats."
"A rat doesn’t have a very long lifespan." Jackal rolled his eyes. "Anyway, I am afraid I will lose money."
"Is money that important?" Jason asked.
"Of course, money is everything."
"Even your life?" Jason smiled with a wicked expression. "Final offer, arrange the meeting with Silas. Or rot your ass in prison."
Jason stood up and grabbed his coat. Vincent followed the senior detective.
"I know where to find you, Jackal. And you don’t have a place to escape. I will come back tomorrow. Answer me there." Jason parted.
Vincent caught the conflicting emotions behind Jackal.
Fear. Passion. Money.
Vincent smiled and shook his head and walked out of the bed.
"Are you certain that he will arrange the meeting for us?" Vincent asked.
"He will arrange." Jason said.
They reached the streets. The sun was now in the middle, the highest peak.
"Why do you want to have a meeting with Silas? He is a fresh lord right? I doubt he would have useful information about the killing of that student?"
"Hmm.." Jason paused and looked around. He then pointed at the fast food restaurant established on the corner of the street.
"I am hungry. Come on, let’s grab some burgers. My treat." Jason said.
"Alright."
They both entered the restaurant and ordered the meal.
While waiting for the food, Jason began to explain.
"It is because he is a fresh lord that I am planning to meet with him. Do you know how hard it is for a new person to rise up to that level in the business?"
Vincent shook his head.
" A lot harder than maintaining your life as a drug lord." Jason said. "Since he climbed the ladder from the start, he might know things that regular drug lords won’t know about. But again, there is no such thing as a regular drug lord. Either they are insane or have good intelligence."
The foods arrived and the two men quickly devoured them. Not even leaving a single bread crumb behind.
Pass by sneered at them for their lack of eloquence. But they didn’t care at all.
Jason let out a sigh and rubbed his forehead. "The headache is gone. I shouldn’t drink with an empty stomach. Anyway, today is done for now."
"Just like that?" Vincent titled his head.
"Yeah. What are you expecting? Today is just the start of the investigation. We found a lead and the curtain closed for now. So rest well. Meet me at the bar at 10 AM tomorrow." Jason stretched his limbs.
"Sure." Vincent stood up.
"Where are you planning to spend time?" Jason asked.
"I am heading back to the division."
"Fuck you." Jason cursed. "Don’t go to the division. The captain will see your ass and scold me for not doing the job properly."
"We finished the job right?" Vincent smiled.
"Yeah but, man, I thought you were smart. It has been a while since I handled such a big and private case so I am planning to enjoy my time. Got my subtlety?"
"Receive it, sir. I will spend my time fooling around."
"Good job. Now go away from my sight. I am going to enjoy my alone time." Jason waved his hand with a smile.
Vincent walked away but turned around. "I am trying to get into contact with the hero business. Do you have a place where I can meet up with heroes?"
"Underground."
"That too but I am looking for active heroes."
Jason took out the card from his wallet and gave it to Vincent. "Go there. It is a cafe. But you will meet with heroes."
"Any requirements?"
"Just tell who you are working for."
"Got it. Thanks." Vincent nodded, grabbed the card and left.
He checked the location of the cafe and it was in Maple District. The same district where he dropped off Dawnstar.
He whistled and ordered the taxi.
