Chapter 85: Mutation
That night, Theodore and his group found themselves in an open space, unable to occupy the South Lake High School building due to the menacing presence of mutated animals. The tension was palpable as they prepared to rest, knowing they were not alone.
As they had discussed earlier, as soon as the sun rose, they immediately rushed away from the South Lake High School area. They were afraid that if they stayed longer, something bad might happen to them.
Their preparations this time were more thorough, so even though the road to the base was still dotted with hordes of zombies, the soldiers were eagerly shooting at all of them.
Theodore was forced to sit with the truck’s driver at the front by the others, and he was placed there with Chelsea. Honestly, Theodore would instead shoot the zombies in the back.
Theodore’s heavy breathing made Chelsea chuckle softly. She knew that Theodore would not like this arrangement.
"You look like a fighting maniac if you sigh like that just because you can’t shoot a zombie in the back." Chelsea shook her head and gave Theodore a strange look.
"I’d rather sleep than have you nag me," Theodore said as he glanced at Chelsea out of the corner of his eye.
Chelsea’s snickering turned into laughter when she heard Theodore’s reaction. It was fun to tease someone as serious as Theodore.
. . .
Theodore was jolted awake by the sound of the truck door opening. He was surprised to find himself in such a deep sleep, not even aware that the truck had stopped.
"You’re finally awake too. Roderick is waiting for you," Cassian said, delivering the message he had to Theodore.
"Ah, well. Have we arrived yet?" Theodore, who didn’t remember how long he had slept, decided to ask Cassian.
"I’d say so." Cassian just nodded his head slowly.
Realizing that he had kept Roderick waiting, it seemed like he had angered his friend Victor. Theodore guessed that Roderick must have reported about the mutated animal’s appearance to Victor as soon as they arrived.
"I’ll see you later, I still need to see Roderick." When he arrived in front of Victor’s room, Theodore said goodbye to Cassian.
Without delay, Theodore knocked on Victor’s room door and immediately went inside. Sure enough, Theodore saw Roderick already in there.
When Theodore arrived, Roderick couldn’t help but breathe a sigh of relief. At least now, he wouldn’t be the sole target of Victor’s wrath.
"You come here. There’s something I want to confirm with you." Victor’s heavy voice called out to Theodore. His cold face could still intimidate others who looked at him.
Resignedly, Theodore walked towards Victor’s desk. He stood next to Roderick. To confirm whether Roderick had reported about the mutated animal, Theodore glanced at him and asked with his eyes.
Roderick, who caught the signal, nodded his head slowly in response. This way, they could minimize Victor’s sometimes excessive reactions. ƒreewebɳovel.com
"What did you see at South Lake High School?" Victor would not reveal what Roderick had reported to him so that he could obtain other information from Theodore.
"From the moment we arrived at the place, I was suspicious because there wasn’t a single zombie in sight. I had a sense of Deja Vu when we found the giant zombie that time," Theodore began.
Victor listened quietly, letting Theodore continue and not interrupting his story.
Before continuing his speech, Theodore glanced at Victor. He was relieved to see that Victor looked calm and made no comments.
"I knew there must be something wrong there. Although you have marked that place as safe, no matter how safe it is, there will definitely be zombies there," Theodore continued later.
"Since Roderick and Cassian investigated the school building, I have no idea what happened there. It’s just that when they ran frantically out of the building, I realized that they had found the figure that made the absence of zombies in that place." Theodore continued to reveal what he saw.
"Fortunately, I could see what was chasing Roderick and the others. It was a dog that was larger than the average dog. Its eyes were red, and its fangs looked more like those of a wolf. If you allow me to have an opinion, I think it was a mutated dog." Theodore finally finished his report to Victor.
Victor remained silent while thinking. He had never thought that what Roderick had reported to him before was really happening.
At first, Victor doesn’t believe Roderick’s words because he can only give him witnesses that he can’t trust, especially since Roderick brought someone from outside.
Victor wanted to hear another testimony from someone he could trust, and now that Theodore had said the same thing, he thought they were indeed not lying to him.
"For now, you can go back and rest. I need to discuss this with the higher-ups." Victor immediately sent the two men out of his room.
Theodore and Roderick didn’t want to miss that rare opportunity, so they left Victor’s room without saying anything else.
"You don’t need me anymore, do you?" Theodore turned to Roderick, who was next to him.
"No, I don’t. You’d better go home before the captain changes his mind and sends you to the west gate to work," Roderick said casually.
"Gosh, you’re right. Then I’ll go back home." Theodore immediately darted away; he didn’t want to stay in this barracks for long.
Since they left South Lake High School at dawn, it was still daytime at the base. Most people would be at their workplaces, so Theodore saw few people when he returned to his apartment.
Theodore came across a familiar figure as he walked into the lobby of his apartment building.
"Are you guys stationed here?" Theodore approached the group of people.
The group was Cassian and his group, and they had been given a place in this apartment building. frёewebnoѵel.ƈo๓
"Theodore? You live here, too?" Chelsea was the first to respond to Theodore’s words.
"I’ve been living here since the beginning. I didn’t expect you guys to be housed here," Theodore replied, quite happy to see a familiar face.
"Captain Victor said we could occupy some of the empty apartments here. Please help us in the future. I hope we can be good neighbors." Cassian was also happy to find that Theodore also lived here.
"Then let’s go up." Theodore invited them to go up the stairs.
However, Theodore sensed they were silent and did not follow him, so he looked back in confusion.
"You didn’t know that the elevator could be used now?" Again, Chelsea gave Theodore a strange look,
"Is that so? I’ve never used that elevator," Theodore replied, shrugging his shoulders indifferently.
Chelsea shook her head in disbelief, "You must have been busy slaughtering zombies to not know anything about this base, right?"
Cassian quickly covered his sister’s mouth, "Forgive my sister’s mouth. We better take the elevator now," Cassian said, inviting Theodore to take it with them.
