Chapter 82: South Lake High School

Their journey to South Lake High School was relatively smooth, although, at some turns, the soldiers had to look through the gaps in the back of the bus to slaughter the zombies chasing them.

Other than the zombie chase, their journey was not problematic at all. Theodore could also rest for a while. Although he could no longer sleep like before, at least he could relax until they reached their destination later.

The distance to South Lake High School was quite far from their current position; before the apocalypse, it might only have taken about 30 minutes to travel. But because the roads were very chaotic, it took almost 2 hours to get there.

When they felt the truck start to stop, the people on the tailgate looked at each other. They knew that they were the first ones to move in this situation.

"It’s time for us to get out. Make sure the surroundings are safe," Theodore said, leading the others to get off the tailgate.

"Let me and a few others go down first to check things out. You guys stay here until we’re clear," Theodore continued.

"Be careful; we don’t know what’s going on outside," Cassian reminded Theodore.

Theodore quickly jumped over the cover of the back of the tub; he helped two other soldiers down from the back of the tub to help him check the surroundings.

Without speaking, Theodore instructed the two of them with hand gestures. He told them to split up to the right and left.

Then, Theodore walked towards where Roderick was with his sword ready in his hand; he knocked on the front door of the truck to call out to Roderick, who was inside.

"It’s me," Theodore said after knocking on the truck’s door from the outside.

It wasn’t long before Theodore saw the window glass lowered from inside, and then Roderick’s serious-faced head appeared.

"Did you bring someone to check the surroundings?" Roderick knew that Theodore would understand what he should do in this situation, but he wanted to make sure.

"Yes. From what I’ve seen, this place is pretty safe. I haven’t seen any zombies so far." Theodore began to report what he had seen.

"Very good. We’ll come down to help you," Roderick replied, nodding in understanding.

After giving his report to Roderick, Theodore returned to meet the two soldiers who had come down with him. Theodore hoped they didn’t bring bad news for them.

"Did you see anything suspicious?" Theodore immediately questioned them when he was near them.

"I don’t actually see any zombies here."

"Neither do I. But it feels strange not seeing any zombies."

"It does seem strange that there are no zombies here. I’ve reported this to Roderick; we’ll help the others get off the truck now." Theodore invited the two men to open the door covering the back of their truck.

That way, the people inside the truck could quickly get out. Theodore, with the help of the two soldiers, slowly began to unlock the truck’s back door.

As Theodore and the others opened the truck’s back door, the people inside slowly came into view.

"It’s safe outside. You can come out; just watch your step." Theodore reminded the others to get off carefully.

The twelve people still in the back of the truck began to get out one by one. Finally, they could breathe more freely. Lately, the air on Earth has not been as fresh as before the apocalypse.

Roderick and the other two people in the front of the truck were also there. Theodore thought this was a good time to consider their plan.

"I’m quite surprised that there are no zombies in this place." Roderick initially doubted Theodore’s earlier report.

It was a little unlikely that there were no zombies in this place, but he only believed Theodore’s words when he got off and saw that there were indeed no zombies around their truck.

As before, the soldiers parked their trucks in front of the South Lake High School building. This time, Roderick instructed the soldiers to go straight inside.

The atmosphere inside the school was completely silent and still. They would have thought the school was haunted if they hadn’t remembered that the apocalypse had already happened.

"Should we set up tents here?" Theodore was also quite hesitant to go inside this school building, but he knew that sleeping in the open was unsafe.

"I think we need to check the inside of the building to make sure," Cassian said after his earlier silence.

"It would be hazardous if we spent the night outside. I don’t think it would hurt to check the inside of this building," Roderick replied, nodding his head in agreement with Cassian’s suggestion.

Just as Theodore was about to say he would do the checking, Roderick cut him off.

"You don’t have to. Cassian and I will bring some people to do the checking. You can rest here with the others." Roderick should have given Theodore time to volunteer for this task.

"Is that so?" For a moment, Theodore felt dazed because he didn’t expect Roderick to forbid him from doing something at this time.

On the other hand, Theodore was immensely relieved that he could rest now; he also tried to trust the others to do this task.

"You don’t have to worry; we’ll do fine," Cassian said with a small smile.

"Alright, I’ll keep the others here." Theodore finally nodded his head in happy agreement.

With that, Roderick and Cassian took four people with them, leaving ten in the truck. freeweɓnøvel.com

After their departure, Theodore took some mats for the others to sit or sleep on. Theodore also asked the others to help him, and while doing so, he realized that Chelsea, the woman who knew his secret, was also there.

"Until the others return, we can rest here." Theodore also allowed the others to rest because some injured people were among them.

Then Theodore decided to approach Chelsea. He wanted to make sure that she could keep her mouth shut.

"How are your wounds?" To start their conversation, Theodore asked about the state of Chelsea’s wound.

"It’s much better. You didn’t come to see me just to ask me that, did you?" Chelsea looked at Theodore with a grin.

Seeing how Chelsea grinned at him, Theodore somehow felt annoyed when he saw her.
