Chapter 72: Dead City
As they made their way out of the base gate, the truck they were traveling in began to be swarmed by zombies. The soldiers on the tailgate started shooting at the zombies to keep them moving forward.
Fortunately, they could still move relatively freely. Roderick also directed their driver towards the first place they would try to visit while staying away from the zombies that continued to stick to their truck.
Theodore could see what had happened to City A almost two weeks after the zombie outbreak. The city had become a ghost town.
"I didn’t expect the city to look this creepy, even though it’s only been two weeks," Theodore said sadly, looking out the window.
"The world isn’t the same anymore. We must work hard to maintain the base’s survival," Roderick replied, feeling Theodore’s sadness.
The once lively and bright city was now cold and dead. To get through the streets leading to their destination, they had to find a road that was still passable. They had to make frequent detours because the streets were filled with abandoned cars.
Also, many zombies were roaming around, making it quite difficult for the truck to move. Theodore thought this trip would likely be more complicated than their previous mission.
"We should just go to place number 2. It will be difficult for us to go around again just to get to place number 1," Theodore explained while pointing at the map.
Their destination on the map was marked with a number.. Theodore had marked their current position, and they were closer to place number two, a relatively large mall in the city.
Roderick also looked at the map and thought they couldn’t spend much time just turning around.
Seeing that Theodore’s words made sense, Roderick agreed and ordered their driver to head towards place number two on the map.
"Yes, we can save time if we go there." Roderick was quite satisfied with Theodore’s suggestion.
Theodore thought that they should already allow people who didn’t have jobs at the base to go out on expeditions. That way, Theodore felt that crime would decrease and the number of zombies would decrease.
Not only that, they could also clear the roads of abandoned cars. Theodore thought it would be good for people to form groups to go out on bases. freёweɓnovel.com
"Can I say something?" Theodore, who was not part of the military, could not be that free to express his opinions or suggestions.
In response, Roderick nodded without turning to Theodore; he was busy watching the situation outside.
"Why don’t you let the unemployed explore outside the base?" Theodore calmly expressed the idea that was in his head.
"I don’t know either. The Captain never said anything about it," Roderick said in silence and glanced at Theodore.
"Isn’t it possible that by sending them out of the base, the crime rate inside the base could go down, and also, the cars on these streets could be cleaned up while they go out frequently?" Theodore shrugged his shoulders indifferently and returned to the map in his hand.
Roderick was silent, but he agreed with Theodore’s words in his heart. It seemed he could mention the idea later to Victor.
"Oh yes, did you know that yesterday the thugs at the north gate attacked the wall workers," Theodore said once again. He remembered that he had not yet told the military this.
"You’re not lying, are you?" Initially content to stare out the window, Roderick immediately turned to look at Theodore.
"How could I dare lie to a soldier like you! Yesterday, they really came, and it seems that if I hadn’t come, they intended to kill the workers on the north wall." Theodore excitedly reported the thugs at the north gate.
"Damn, they already dared to go that far. Why didn’t you say it earlier? At this rate, how can I tell the Captain!" This time, Roderick glared at Theodore, blaming him for not telling him earlier.
"I was too tired last night, and you guys didn’t give me time to say it," Theodore retorted, unfazed by Roderick’s glare.
Roderick was seen gritting his teeth in annoyance when he heard Theodore’s words. He sometimes forgot that the young man in front of him was annoying. He could only sigh because there was nothing he could do about it.
Theodore thought it was because the mall they were going to was not in the city’s center but not on the outskirts, so the roads were not too congested.
Therefore, the streets were not too full of abandoned cars. However, there were just as many zombies as in the city center.
"Prepare for battle. We’re almost there," Roderick said as he opened the window so that even those in the tailgate could hear him.
Theodore started to roll up the map in his hand; they. They were already going down, so he didn’t need to pay attention to them.
Finally, their truck was able to stop in front of the mall entrance. But it was again surrounded by zombies. To get out, the soldiers on the tailgate shot at the zombies that filled their truck door so the three people inside could get out.
After their exit had been opened, Theodore was the first to get out of the truck. With a sword in his hand, he swung it to slaughter the zombies in the scope of his attack.
Then, Roderick and the soldier driving the tr followed. After everyone in the truck got out, they secured the surrounding area so those in the back could get off.
With their cooperation, it wasn’t difficult for them to clear the surrounding area of zombies.
"Quickly run into the mall!" Roderick immediately ordered the others to enter the mall after everyone exited the truck.
Guarding them against them, Theodore also walked backward to catch up with the others because he still had to deal with the remaining zombie.
The rest of the members also ran towards the mall’s entrance. They intended to go inside, but their bodies bounced when they tried to break through.
It was pretty dark there, so they didn’t really see what was behind the door, but now that they were awake, they realized that there were many piles of heavy objects behind the mall entrance.
"Chief, it’s bad. The door is blocked from the inside. It looks like they locked it from the inside, too!" One of the soldiers shouted back to inform Roderick, who was at the back.
