Chapter 55: The Eastern Pack
Anastasia walked into the room, a wide grin stretching across her face.
She spotted Liam near the mirror, dressing himself after a refreshing shower.
With an air of delight, she approached him, her steps light and purposeful.
Their eyes met through the mirror, Anastasia placed her hand on his back, feeling those big muscles under her touch, before approaching even more kissing him on the lips and hugging him by wrapping her arms around his waist and resting on his chest, whispering "Good morning, handsome. You look good and fresh as always."
A soft smile played on Liam’s lips as he unintentionally purred, enjoying the hug and his mate’s pheromones.
He also hugged her back tightly, pulling her closer and whispering "Thank you, my love. It makes me feel confident and happy to get compliments from a divine and gorgeous person."
Anastasia couldn’t help but blush at his words.
She moved closer, cupping his face in her hands and placing a gentle kiss on his soft lips."You always know the right thing to say."
Liam lifted his hands to softly tuck her hair behind her ears so that he could her whole pretty face, his eyes filled with affection as he replied "And you always know how to make me feel loved.
Anastasia’s heart raced as she stared at Liam’s reflection in the mirror, his smile warm and affectionate.
As she caressed his swollen belly, the love she felt for their unborn child swelled within her. "How is our baby doing?"
Liam chuckled and placed his hand right on hers, caressing his stomach " He is more than okay. I can not wait to hold him in my arms."
They both were in a happy bubble, Anastasia was about to open her mouth to say something about how much she was to hold the baby too.
But then, something shifted in the atmosphere, an unseen force descending like a thick fog, smothering the tender moment with a creeping intensity.
She turned around, expecting...what?
The room remained peaceful, sunlight filtering through the curtains as it always did.
A chill prickled her skin despite the warmth.
Frowning, Anastasia turned back to the mirror, and there he stood
- Nicolas, her best friend lost his life ten years ago and had left a memorable scar and left Alexander in her care.
The scream caught in her throat as she took in his grotesque appearance.
Shredded flesh hung from his swollen abdomen, exposing a gaping wound that oozed thick streams of blood down his leg.
His eyes, once so full of life, were now sunken holes echoing a terrifying emptiness.
Unmistakably, he wore the visage of the zombie.
"What about our baby?" Nickolas’ voice, a raspy hiss, sent ice through her veins. "What about me, Anastasia?"
Anastasia clutched Liam’s belly protectively, her mind spinning.
This couldn’t be real.
Nicolas was dead.
With a jolt, Anastasia tore her gaze away from the mirror’s horror to find Liam still beside her, very much alive and whole.
But the relief was short-lived as she took in his ashen complexion and the gaping maw that had become his torso.
Thick blood oozed from jagged tears in his flesh, dripping down to puddles on the floor.
A ragged sound of pure terror escaped her lips as she stumbled backward, away from the gruesome phantom of her mate.
Yet there in the mirror, matching Liam’s awful visage, was Nicolas - her friend who had departed this world a decade prior.
Impossible.
Her mind rebelled against what her eyes insisted was real.
One of them is dead, rotting remains of the vibrant soul she had known, marching ever forward with tattered flesh and soulless eyes fixed upon her.
"You killed us," their voices rasped in unison, more rotten hiss than human timbre.
Anastasia’s back struck the wall with a thump.
There was nowhere to run, nowhere to hide from this unholy sight.
She clutched her fists, trying to hold herself together.
She reminded herself of who she was.
She is Anastasia Rain, she can not get scared like this.
Nick walked out of the mirror and stood next to Liam as they drew nearer, blood was everywhere as they chanted in a terrifying loud voice "You killed us! You killed us!"
Tearful pleas spilled from her lips, but they fell on indifferent ears.
For the first time in her life, she felt helpless.
Guilt is killing her every single day, the sight of Nickolas walking toward her is a dead body with a swollen belly and blood running down his mouth, nose, ears, and eyes.
Then Liam who did not look dead looked sick as his swollen belly, was now flat but had a huge wound on it and there was so much blood coming out from it and rushing down his legs.
She can not take this anymore, her heart is racing in fear and is about to come out, she can smell the blood because of how close Nick and Liam are to her now.
Screwing her eyes shut, Anastasia screamed - a breathless, keening wail that drowned out their ghastly accusations.
It echoed and reverberated until...silence.
Her eyes flew open to find herself in bed, blankets twisted around her legs.
Dim light filtered through the curtains as Liam slumbered peacefully beside her, chest rising and falling with each even breath.
A dream.
Just a nightmare.
She exhaled a shuddering sob of relief.
Anastasia was still shaking from the bad dream.
She took some deep breaths to calm down.
She looked at Liam sleeping beside her in the bed.
She felt better seeing he was okay. Anastasia moved closer to cuddle him from behind as she buried her face in his neck, breathing his scent.
But then she remembered something wasn’t right.
Liam had been gone for six whole months because of what she did.
He wouldn’t be in her bed.
This didn’t make sense.
Suddenly, Liam turned over and looked right at her with a scary look on his face.
His voice sounded creepy as he yelled "You killed me!"
Anastasia screamed.
She sat up fast, all tangled in the blankets. freewebnovel.cσ๓
She was sweating and breathing hard, full of fear.
The dream felt so real and terrible.
Then Anastasia’s mom came rushing into the room.
The door flew open and light came in. Her mom hugged her tightly.
"It’s okay, it was just a bad dream again," her mom said in a gentle, calming voice.
Anastasia felt a little better with her mom there, but the nightmare scared her.
Anastasia stared off blankly, eyes glassy and empty.
Dried tears streaked her pale cheeks - the only hint of the nightmare that had woken her in terror just moments ago.
"Tell me what’s wrong, Anastasia," her mother spoke gently.
But her daughter didn’t respond, seeming lost in her inner void.
This had become a daily struggle for the past six months.
Anastasia retreated deeper and deeper within herself, shutting the world out.
Her mother sighed heavily. "This has been going on too long. Please, let me help you."
She brushed Anastasia’s hair from her face, her touch tender. "Your father and I are so worried about you. We just want you to be safe and happy."
But Anastasia did not react, barely even blinking as if she couldn’t hear the aching pleas.
The months of haunting inner torment had hollowed her cheeks and drained the vibrant spark from her eyes until they looked lifeless.
Seeing words could not reach her today as always, Anastasia’s mother climbed onto the bed.
She cuddles her daughter’s frame, hugging her close. Rocking them both gently, she hummed a lullaby as if Anastasia was a baby.
Anastasia as usual did not mind that at all.
Slowly, the rigid lines of anguish softened on Anastasia’s face.
Her eyelids drifted shut as the soothing melody pulled her back into sleep’s embrace.

Anastasia stood at the borders of her pack, studying the scorched trees and crumbled walls - grim reminders of the attack that had just occurred two days ago.
That devastating attack six months ago was merely the first in a relentless storm, the enemy kept striking frequency almost every week since.
Yet their identity remained an enigma, casting a pall of dread over the lands.
"Caleb," Anastasia addressed her Caleb sharply. "Have the builders reinforce these walls immediately. And replace the fallen guards with other warriors - we cannot afford further vulnerabilities."
As the others dispersed to follow her orders, Caleb lingered. "Alpha...there is more about Liam’s case."
A leaden knot formed in Anastasia’s stomach. "What happened? Did you find him?"
"Not really, but some people said a man approached him after he left the packhouse six months ago" Caleb explained carefully. "For reasons unknown, Liam chose to leave with this stranger...taking his mother as well. They departed and have not been seen since."
Anastasia’s jaw tightened, but she nodded curtly, dismissing Caleb to his duties.
Alone once more, she made her way to the packhouse to go to her office in order to think of some solution to stop those attacks, which is where she found Philip waiting for her.
"Philip? Why are you here instead of training the warriors?" Anastasia asked after she stepped inside her office, heading to her desk where Philip was standing.
"The eastern pack, the Luna pack suffers from the same problem as us," Philip said grimly. "It seems we face a common enemy."
Anastasia’s eyes hardened. "Thank you for letting me know. I will contact the head alpha of Luna. You can leave, now."
Anastasia did in fact e-mail the head alpha of Luna’s pack and within hours, a reply came - the head alpha welcomed such an alliance wholeheartedly, inviting Anastasia and her pack to his lands.
