Chapter 31: I’m His Dad.

"Yes, I heard about that too," another woman said, taking a small pause. "This morning, my husband went to work where he saw the people from the Imperial Army."

"The same happened to my husband, too; he was going to his usual tax collection where he spotted them, and apparently, they were looking for a criminal."

Leon’s eyes widened slightly, and sweat dripped across his face. "A criminal?" he muttered.

A strange memory started to flood his brain. ƒгeewebnovёl.com

"You lowlife, how dare you come into this city?" A man dressed in a suit said, pointing his finger towards Leon as he continued. "And you dare steal food from one of our shops?"

Another man joined the conversation, a sly smile tugging at the corner of his lips.

"Why don’t we hand him over to the Imperial Army?"

The man in the suit raised an eyebrow. "The army? They aren’t going to arrest someone over a bit of food."

"Who said we’ll give him for that reason? We’ll fabricate him into something big." The man said, spreading his arms wide.

Leon’s breathing started to get hurried, sweat spreading across his body at a rapid pace. His consciousness shot back to reality, head turned towards the ground.

"No... it can’t be true, right?"

And the next instant, there was only one thing which he could think of. "I should go back home... the mansion lord might be able to protect me in this situation."

Without wasting another second, he turned around and broke into a run. He rushed through the residential district, sped past the marketplace, and didn’t slow down until he reached the outskirts of the forest where the mansion stood.

When he reached there, he instantly leaned down and grabbed his knees. Panting started the moment he stopped; sweat was drenched all over his body. "I-I think I successfully made it back home."

He remained there for a while, taking his time to compose himself. Then, he walked inside the mansion, and the moment he did, Kael was standing in front of him. His arms remained crossed, gaze fixed at the door as if he were awaiting him.

"Why did you come back in such a hurry?"

The words lingered in the air for a while, and silence fell over the surroundings as Leon found it difficult to answer right away.

"Should I just tell him the truth? Yes, I think I should."

He was about to say something, but before he could, a loud voice rang out from outside and echoed throughout the mansion’s garden.

"You criminal! Get out of here this instant!" The voice clearly belonged to a woman.

Leon’s jaw dropped, eyes widened completely. His body started to tremble lightly as he turned his head towards the door.

A confused yet frightened sound escaped his lips. "U-Uh..."

He slowly turned his head toward Kael, who remained standing there in silence, his expression unchanged. "M-Mansion Lord, I didn’t do anything. I swear," he said hurriedly, panic creeping into his voice.

Without uttering anything, Kael walked towards the main gate. The door was shut, but wasn’t locked.

The moment he pulled the door fully open, his gaze fell upon a woman standing outside. She was dressed in a black-and-red uniform, with black trousers that gave her a sharp and professional appearance. It was immediately obvious that she belonged to the Imperial Army. Pinned to her chest was a badge bearing the emblem of an eagle, proudly displaying her affiliation.

Kael studied her for a while, as a thought appeared inside his mind. "The Imperials?"

Without wasting any more time, he asked. "What are you here for?" The tone was completely blunt.

The woman immediately lifted her brow, hands travelled down to her waist. "You can’t question me, I’m the one who’ll be asking them from you both." She said, gaze shifted towards Leon for once, and then back at Kael.

"I have no reason to answer you." His expression remained unchanged.

"W-what?" Kael’s blunt response caught the woman off guard. A hint of displeasure flashed across her face, clearly unhappy with the way he had spoken to her.

After saying that, he was about to turn away to leave. But he felt a strange touch on his wrist. His eyes moved to his wrist, where the woman’s hand had suddenly wrapped around it.

"You can’t leave without answering my questions, cooperate with me."

Her gaze shifted toward Leon as she pointed her finger towards him and continued. "That man over there is someone who has committed a crime."

Leon took a few steps back, directing his hands forward in front of his chest. "W-woah!! You can’t assume things and press it on someone."

Kael studied him for a moment before letting out a quiet sigh. "Fine. Go ahead."

He paused briefly, his expression remaining unchanged. "But be quick. I still have to wake my son."

The woman took a few steps forward and stopped in front of Leon. "The moment he learned that the Imperial Army was searching the city for a criminal, he immediately ran away."

Leon ignored the woman and looked right at Kael. "Hold on a second, that’s not true. I didn’t run away because of that at all."
