Chapter 14: High Priest.
Sylas quickly ran towards Leon, opened his arms wide, indicating to Leon to pick him up. "Let’s go, mister white."
A faint smile appeared on Leon’s face as he leaned in closer and picked Sylas up in his arms. He gently patted his head and said. "Yes, we’ll leave right away."
He walked toward the gate, and as he passed through it, he closed it gently behind him so as not to wake Kael from his short nap.
They both made their way towards the city, while walking, Sylas’s eyes kept lingering on the things around them; he was praising the beauty of the untouched nature.
A thought came to Leon’s mind as a bead of sweat tugged his forehead. "Mansion Lord is such a scary bastard, and his son is such a cute being."
He gritted his teeth and kept walking towards the city.
When they reached there, the city seemed peaceful, as if no one was there; the shops were still open, and the shopkeepers were there.
But there weren’t any customers on the street. Leon’s eyes wandered from one street to another; multiple thoughts lingered in his mind. "Where are people? Usually, this place is full of people who try to beat me the moment they see me." freёwebnovel.com
A sigh escaped through his mouth as he made his way towards the grocery shop. The shopkeeper looked at him, his eyes frowned as an expression appeared on his face. "You lowlife, how dare you show your face here today?"
He clenched his fists, teeth gritted. "I don’t want to say anything bad from my mouth today at least, so go away."
Then the man’s gaze fell on Sylas, and a cute smile was on his face as he waved at the man. "Heyllooo~"
The expression on the man’s face lightened, but then an uncertain worry lingered over his face. "Hey, where did you get that kid from?"
He got up and walked out of the shop. Grabbing Leon by the collar, his eyes widened, sharp and chilling, as if dripping with poison.
"Did you kidnap that child?"
Leon took a step back. He hugged Sylas slightly tighter than before. "W-what do you mean... do you think I’m some kind of kidnapper?"
The man’s voice suddenly rose, eyes looked infuriated. "How dare a low-class person like you talk back to me?" He kicked Leon right in his gut, making him stagger backwards.
But Leon didn’t let Sylas get hurt; he hugged him tightly. A low groan left through his mouth. "Ughh... are you dumb? Can’t you see that a kid is in my arms?"
While he was talking, his hand travelled to Sylas’s head and started patting him lightly.
The man stepped forward in a hurry and was about to grab Sylas by his hair. But before he could have done so, a voice erupted through the surroundings.
"Halt!"
The man’s gaze suddenly shifted toward the source of the voice. A man dressed in a black robe stood there, with an emblem of a staff surrounded by holy power embroidered across the front.
The shopkeeper suddenly bowed his head, body started to tremble lightly. "My apologies, Mr Paladin."
A thought passed through Leon’s mind as his gaze lingered on the paladin. "What’s a paladin doing here?"
He gulped, gaze studying the paladin closely. "That robe isn’t of the holy nation... so from where?"
The paladin noticed Leon staring at him blankly and stepped forward. "You there, what are you doing outside when it was clearly announced that the residents of this county were not to roam around today? The High Priest himself has arrived here." fɾēewebnσveℓ.com
Leon frowned, his gaze turned towards Sylas, who was trembling in fear. He leaned in towards his ear as he muttered. "Don’t be scared, everything’s alright."
The moment he said that, his gaze met the paladin’s eyes directly.
"Sir Paladin, I wasn’t aware that the High Priest would be arriving today. I only came here to buy some groceries. The shops were open, so I thought it would be fine to come."
The paladin stepped forward and looked at Leon. "You disobeyed the holy order, though you can’t leave unscathed."
His hand travelled towards his waist as he lifted his robe. A sheathed sword appeared, tucked next to his waist. The paladin grabbed the hilt as he pulled the sword.
He directed the sword towards Leon. Leon instinctively took a step back, grip on Sylas got a bit tighter.
"W-why are you doing this to us..." Leon muttered.
"I stated it already, now accept the order of god." Paladin lifted his sword and swung it downwards, aimed it towards Leon’s head.
Leon closed his eyes, but he didn’t let his grip on Sylas loose for even a single bit.
But before the blade could land, another sound rang through the air.
"Halt, paladin."
The paladin’s sword came to an abrupt stop, and he instantly bowed his head.
His gaze turned toward a man dressed in a black robe. A white-and-gold crown rested upon his head, while his long beard and mature features made him appear to be in his forties.
The paladin roared in fury, veins bulging across his neck as rage twisted his expression. "Hail the goddess Mary, this lowly servant of the goddess pays his respects to the high priest."
The high priest didn’t say anything, just waved his hand towards the paladin. His gaze shifted toward Sylas, who had tightly clung to Leon out of sheer fear.
A smile appeared on the man’s face as he directed his hand forward. "What’s your name, son?"
Leon blinked a few times; a sense of worry lingered on his face. "Why’s a head priest asking that from Sylas? I’m not getting any good feelings out of this."
The high priest’s smile widened slightly as he patted Sylas’s head. "Answer me, child."
"How old are you?"
