Chapter 37: Chapter 32: Special Affairs Prosecution Committee, Songx Shiyi

Isabel got out of the car but didn’t move right away.

Her eyes were fixed on the lamppost.

Following her line of sight, Luh Yao saw a sparrow perched on top of the streetlamp’s shade.

It was three-thirty in the afternoon, so it was rather strange that the alley’s streetlamp was already on.

"Sir, I’ve detected a Demon Apostle."

Isabel’s eyes locked onto the sparrow. "To avoid exposing your position, I must take a roundabout approach."

Luh Yao’s heart tightened at her words.

’An Apostle?’

’Don’t tell me the Prayer God is here.’

Isabel was more vigilant than ever, her gaze fixed on the sparrow perched on the lamp.

"Retreat."

Luh Yao ordered immediately, "Safety first."

"Sir, they’re already here."

The words had barely left Isabel’s lips when a figure appeared at the mouth of the alley.

The newcomer had short, silver-gray hair and wore a blue-and-white, schoolgirl-style uniform with a long-sleeved top and short skirt. She had on long black socks, brown leather shoes, and a small white bag slung over one shoulder.

She looked to be under twenty, with a pair of sparkling, almond-shaped eyes. The young woman’s lips were pursed like a kitten’s, giving her a somewhat serious expression, but it couldn’t mask the unique vitality and energy of someone her age.

As soon as the young woman appeared, the sparrow took flight and landed on her shoulder.

"This is our first meeting."

The young woman looked at Isabel. "Hello, I’m Prosecutor Songx Shiyi of the Special Affairs Prosecution Committee."

Her voice was light and lilting.

At the same time, a halo of light materialized behind Songx Shiyi. It was like a Star Ring encircling her, appearing to hold a miniature, twinkling cosmos within.

Within the Star Ring behind her, a silver shield appeared. On its face was a depiction of a burning bonfire.

The spectacle lasted only for a moment before vanishing without a trace.

"If you could stay for a moment to give a statement... the Committee would be very grateful for your cooperation."

Songx Shiyi looked past Isabel, her gaze locking onto the vehicle involved in the incident.

"It looks like you’ve already taken care of the fugitive I was hunting."

Isabel remained silent.

From a distance, Luh Yao’s mind raced. He said to Isabel, "Agree to it. Let’s see what this Committee is all about."

Seeing that Isabel didn’t refuse, Songx Shiyi said, "Thank you," and opened her bag. She took out her phone and started a new recording.

"Standard procedure. I have to record this."

"And your name is?"

"Mary."

"I see. Miss Mary, the member of the East Sea Clan named Yuyao, who illegally crossed over from a Low Realm Dimension, had murdered two innocent civilians prior to this. She was a high-priority fugitive the Committee has been hunting, and she recently surfaced in this area. Please tell me about your encounter with her..."

"What about the Prayer God?" Isabel countered. "Was he, the mastermind behind all this, ever caught?"

She was merely repeating Luh Yao’s words.

"The Prayer God?"

A flicker of surprise crossed Songx Shiyi’s face. "He was arrested two years ago. It seems you two haven’t been paying attention to the announcements."

She elaborated slightly.

"For his involvement in multiple major criminal acts, the Prayer God was sentenced to 180 years in prison. Barring a Miracle, he’ll be spending a long, long time in a containment cell."

’Now that’s good news,’ Luh Yao thought.

’Less risk of a real-life showdown.’

’In the Pixel World, I’ve already destroyed two of the Prayer God’s Totems. From the looks of it, if we meet again, I’ll most likely do the same thing.’

Luh Yao spoke through Isabel, "Since the Prayer God has already been captured, what’s the story with Yuyao?"

"I’ll explain that in more detail later. But first, I need to ask you about the specifics of what happened here."

Songx Shiyi questioned her thoroughly about Yuyao.

Isabel pleaded ignorance. She claimed she had only detected Yuyao’s status as an individual from a Low Realm Dimension and, noticing her abnormal behavior, had stopped her for questioning. But the woman, acting out of a guilty conscience, tried to launch a sneak attack and was killed in the resulting counterattack.

"I see."

Songx Shiyi blinked as she listened, a motion that seemed to be a personal quirk.

Luh Yao felt that Songx Shiyi’s blinking reminded him of someone... The more he looked, the stronger the resemblance. The name was on the tip of his tongue, but he just couldn’t recall it.

When the questioning was more or less finished, Songx Shiyi pressed the stop button on her phone.

"Thanks for your cooperation."

She put her phone back in her bag. "The rest of this is off the record. Miss Apostle, you’re the one who caught ’Jack’ nearby last time, aren’t you?"

Isabel didn’t respond.

But from afar, Luh Yao’s heart skipped a beat.

"Don’t be nervous. This is purely a personal conversation."

"Miss Mary, please allow me to reintroduce myself."

Songx Shiyi pointed to herself. "I may be a prosecutor for the Committee, but because I have a mental illness, a lot of people are surprisingly willing to stay in touch with me."

"Have you ever heard of anterograde amnesia? Mine is a bit more severe than that."

"To put it simply, I can only retain memories for a very short time. My skills, knowledge, and experience stick around, but my personal recollections are automatically wiped within twenty-four hours. The only long-term memories I have are from before I was fourteen."

"On top of that, I can also choose to erase my memories. In other words, I can delete memories, but I can’t save them."

"It’s actually a good thing for my job. I don’t have to remember too much, so I don’t have too many worries. And people are willing to cooperate with me because they know I won’t be prying into their private lives."

"The Committee suggested I wear something like a body camera, but I refused. If I did that, I’d lose my advantage."

"Besides, having to catch up on so many things every time I wake up would be a huge burden. This way, every day is a new beginning. It’s much more relaxing."

She stroked the sparrow on her shoulder. "This is Mingzai. His ability is identification; he’s an expert in that field."

"That’s how I was able to tell what you were at a glance."

"Of course, you can verify everything I’ve just said with a few inquiries."

"This is my business card. If you ever need help, or if you have any leads for me, please call this number."

She fished a white business card out of her bag and offered it politely with both hands.

"I look forward to your call, Miss Mary."

Luh Yao understood.

By explaining her situation and revealing her identity and personal Traits, Songx Shiyi was extending an olive branch, hoping Isabel would become a potential informant for her.

Isabel accepted the card courteously.

"Well then, I should be getting back to report. Please give my regards to the friend you serve."

Songx Shiyi took a small plastic case from her bag, pinched out a capsule, and held it up. "Like I said, when the situation calls for it, the memories can disappear ahead of schedule."

She swallowed the capsule, then took out a bottle of mineral water and took a swig.

A moment later, Songx Shiyi’s eyes went vacant, as if she’d just woken up. She looked down at her skirt and long socks with a bewildered expression.

"Why am I not at home?"

"Ugh, what happened this time?"

"I remember I had an outdoor photoshoot today. Is this the place...?"

She took out her phone and started scrolling through her notes.

The sparrow on her shoulder, as if long accustomed to this routine, simply preened its feathers.

Isabel walked past Songx Shiyi, who didn’t react at all.

Just then, Luh Yao finally remembered.

Songx Lingyun, a member of the girl idol group SUH!

She was Songx Lingyun!

Luh Yao remembered Songx Lingyun because two of his friends in college had been obsessed with her. They found her energetic and cute, if a bit ditzy at times, but she would occasionally have a sudden burst of brilliance, becoming incredibly sharp and clever. His friends were a mix of "husband fans" and "dad fans."

He quickly did a search online.

That kitten-like pout and the way she blinked—it wasn’t just a resemblance, it was an exact match.

Songx Lingyun was Songx Shiyi.

A pop idol who was secretly a prosecutor for a special agency... The plot reminded him of some bizarre Japanese special effects show.

Searching further online, Luh Yao discovered that Songx Lingyun had abruptly left the group three years ago due to "health reasons." After that, she completely vanished. Online rumors claimed she had gone abroad for medical treatment.

Luh Yao frowned.

That raised a question.

Was this a case of a young prosecutor infiltrating an idol group to investigate a crime?

Or was it more like, "Being an idol can’t save the world, so I’ll become a prosecutor"?
