Chapter 24: A Named Assassin: Amiko

Floating in the air with her arms raised, she continued her incantation, the howling wind roared louder, the trees at the brink of wrenching out of their roots, I could barely open my eyes well to peer at her from the blizzard.

The chilling cold only intensified.

I enhanced my body with mana, getting it didn’t help fight against the cold, but it gave me the strength I need to fight what would come.

She was far and long-range fight wasn’t really my thing, I bent my knees, clenching my fists, ready to pounce on her.

Suddenly, Quinette cut her blade through the air, mana formed in a thin slash, launched towards the assassin.

It cut through the air, shooting past. Its thin edges cut through everything, splitting even a snowflake in two. freewёbn૦νeɭ.com

The slash slammed with the ground, boom, the ground cracked open, so deep it split the earth, with the assassin escaping by a hair.

She skidded on the snow backwards, landing in an unbothered stance, snow billowed in the air, causing a shroud around her.

This was the perfect opportunity to strike, she hadn’t used her magic yet which I can take advantage of, using Quinette’s unexpected strike.

But SSS rank wasn’t a joke, I could feel the overwhelming mana, causing shudders in my bones.

It was a mere facade, I stood unaffected.

I didn’t rush into action. Not yet.

She smirked like the intended attack was nothing, her attention snapped to Quinette in the air. "Severing magic too? We are a bad match. I thought this human was the only one in the chamber."

"Sigh. Miscalculation on my side."

She was so relaxed while speaking, which made her presence more chilling.

"You." She pointed at Quinette. "What’s your name?"

"I don’t tell my name to fiends." Quinette sneered.

"Hmm? Well, I’m Amiko. And I’ll make you a deal. If you let me kill that human over there, I’ll let you leave.

What do you think."

She making an offer with Quinette?

"Offer denied." Quinette said without hesitation, I didn’t know her reasons but.

At least I knew she wasn’t foolish enough to believe an enemy.

Watching Amiko make an offer with Quinette didn’t sit right, based on power level she’s six times stronger in mana level? Then why?

My eyes narrowed on Amiko. Something isn’t right.

Then something eclipsed where she stood. Though the sky was already cloudy, the sky darkened more.

So I knew something was above us.

With a quick glance I confirmed it.

I returned my eyes to Amiko. But the sight didn’t stick into my head, so I looked above us again.

A huge dry skull with spine dangling.

Red thread wrapped around it connecting with three metal poles of inverted crosses.

What the. Quinette spotted it, but different from me, I tried to analyse what it was.

She already knew what it was, dismissed it quickly.

Quinette pointed her blade to Amiko.

"You should be worried about yourself. Unlike him I know you aren’t strong."

What?

"Walter. Ever heard of a binding curse?"

Quinette said, eyes still focused on the girl ahead.

"I’ll be quick. It’s a curse people inflict on themselves for power. Like her. In exchange for tremendous power, she can’t use her full power outside this place. But also the gained mana can only be used on one spell.

She pointed above her head. "That construct in the sky. Is the spell. She trapping us, turning this place into a dungeon."

My ears perked at the last word.

I knew what a dungeon was. Since I read about it.

A domain-like spell which traps people in it unless they defeat the boss.

We can’t leave.

If she was using a binding curse to inflict this dungeon, it means the boss of this dungeon would be an SSS rank.

Yet Amiko’s mana level will remain the same.

I used enhanced sight on the skull.

Above it was the spell’s progress.

The spell wasn’t complete, we still have a chance.

"I’m utterly disappointed. I thought you would be a huge threat."

Amiko scowled. Seeing we realized the situation.

"This is why you’re a mistake. I should have made sure you left the chamber." She pointed at Quinette.

"Severing magic. Malovent outburst."

Amiko unleashed her mana, bursted it out, sending sickles in hundreds slashing towards us, the swarm was overwhelming, a tidal wave of slashes coming at us together.

Just launching her barrage, Amiko turned around.

"Bye bye."

Then she fled.

’We aren’t letting you escape.’

I lunged towards the onslaught.

Prepared to adapt to the cuts.

Quinette plunged in with her blade, landing between me and the attack. She carved her blade repeatedly, faster than my eyes could follow.

Her blade deflected the volley away without even a scratch left on the steel.

A blade that can deflect magic, I looked closer at the design, and mana signature printed on it.

This was an artifact.

Still I grimaced. "You should have stayed out of my way."

Adapting to her stronger magic would be very useful. But now Quinette stepped in.

Ruining my plan.

I shot towards Amiko leaving a crater behind, with mana enhancement, it quadrupled my strength, speed, agility.

My legs worked faster, I Quinette didn’t reply. She plunged. Her wings swept as she flew beside me moving towards a coordinated attack.

We tore through the haze.

Following Amiko into the treeline.

She had veered into. I skidded to a stop, changing direction abruptly.

Into the trees.

Amiko was flying in-between the trees occasionally, looking behind her to see us.

Bearing down on her.

Hundreds of slashes followed from Quinette, it sliced into the trees, they fell one by one with a heavy crash, raising snow.

Amiko dodged them, smoothly escaping through the corridors, free.

She was fast.

But we were reeling her in, I launched myself into the air, using the falling trees as steps, to gain momentum and speed.

Closing the gap more. Faster.

Amiko sent an onslaught flying to me, I blocked it, colliding with my arms. Spilling my blood to my robe.

I winced.

Then the system chimed in my head.
