Chapter 53: P-Please... I want to go with you

I blinked a few times as I stared at the information on the screen. A hint of curiosity crept into my voice.
"Why do you want to join our club? You have more than enough ability to choose a better one."
Kellan scratched the back of his head awkwardly, seemingly unsure where to begin.
Before he could answer, my wife spoke calmly.
"Because you’re an outcast? Hybrids are often discriminated against. I suppose the other clubs rejected you for that reason, didn’t they?"
Kellan tilted his head in confusion. His expression gradually twisted into a grimace. A few seconds later, he slapped his forehead in frustration.
"Damn it... So that’s why everyone kept rejecting me."
I narrowed my eyes before letting out a sigh. It seemed this mountain of muscles hadn’t been rejected solely because he was a hybrid—he was also unbelievably dense.
I glanced at my wife.
"I didn’t know you knew that much."
My wife replied, her voice carrying a hint of pride mixed with regret.
"Of course. Before I became crippled, I traveled to many different places."
I said with Kellan.
’’You can go outside and wait our response then.’’
A few minutes later, the next candidate went in.
A handsome man with pale skin, stepped and sat on the chair in front of us. For some reason, I felt a bit similar to him.
Right. He was an introverted person. Moreover, he looked like a soulless machine more than an ordinary human.
I stared at his information on the screen of the iPad.

My wife leaned closer and whispered into my ear, her voice tinged with suspicion.
"Isn’t something strange about this? There’s no logical reason someone like him would want to join our club."
I nodded in understanding. She was right. There was no obvious reason for someone as talented as the man before us to join a club like ours.
I looked at him.
"Is there any particular reason you want to join us?"
Hugh answered in a calm, neutral voice.
"To be honest, I’m your fan. I’ve admired you ever since you killed Thomas."
I frowned in confusion. I honestly couldn’t remember anyone by that name.
"Who is Thomas?"
My wife struggled to hold back a smile before saying,
"He’s the guy who forced us to rent the VIP dormitory. How could you forget him so quickly?"
I tilted my head slightly before nodding.
"Oh... now I remember."
I had never expected that killing that piece of trash would earn me such a loyal admirer.
I nodded in satisfaction.
"All right. You may leave."
...
My wife said,
"Next candidate, please come in."
A few seconds later, my wife and I frowned again as the next candidate walked into the room.
"Maria? Why are you here?"
My wife’s expression immediately turned tense with concern as she stared at her friend.
Maria didn’t say a word. She walked over to the chair and sat down. She glanced at me briefly before quickly looking away, fear evident in her eyes.
I narrowed my eyes.
"Don’t tell me you came here to join our club."
I had a feeling that was the case. She had changed a lot. She no longer looked at me with hostility. Instead, her eyes were filled with fear and unease. It was understandable. After all, I had nearly killed her.
My wife asked anxiously,
"Are you okay? You should be resting in a hospital bed, not sitting here."
Maria paused for a moment before answering,
"The Pope came to the academy and healed me. I’m fine now."
Silence filled the room.
My wife swallowed nervously as she glanced at me. It seemed she was worried that the Pope might punish me for what I had done to Maria.
Just as my wife was about to say something, Maria spoke first.
"The Pope wants to meet you at 11:00 a.m. in the principal’s office."
She added,
"Don’t worry. He just wants to have a short talk with you, like two civilized people."
I sighed.
"All right. I’ll be there."
Meanwhile, my wife’s face went blank, frozen in place. Her eyes were filled with shock, despair, and fear.
I ignored my wife and returned to the interview.
I asked,
"So, is that the only reason you came here? Is there anything else?"
Maria nodded.
"I want to join your club."
I looked at her.
"Why?"
She hesitated for a moment before answering,
"I believe that if I follow you, I’ll become stronger."
I nodded.
"All right. You may leave."
Then I glanced at my wife, who had completely lost the spirit to do anything. It seemed I had underestimated just how important I was to her.
A few minutes later, I called all the candidates back into the room and announced the results.
Jaxon.
Kellan.
Hugh.
Maria.
Four names.
What a day.
I had never expected to recruit four members. Better yet, every one of them would be useful to me. Still, I knew this was only the beginning.
Compared to the academy’s top-tier clubs, we were nothing. They had hundreds of members, well-established organizations, and numerous specialized teams.
It would be difficult to compete with them in our current state, but everything took time to grow.
I glanced at my iPad.
10:44 a.m.
"I should get going. Li, could you wheel my wife back to our apartment?"
Li nodded politely.
"Yes, sir."
My wife, however, looked at me and pleaded,
"Henry... please. I want to go with you."
I let out a sigh and headed for the door, ignoring her.
Just as I reached it, I heard something hit the floor behind me.
I turned around.
My wife had fallen from her wheelchair. She was lying on the floor, struggling to crawl toward me.
Her eyes were red and glistening with tears.
"P-Please... I want to go with you."
