Chapter 143: The Expressionless Girl
"Meow..."
After Kazuma entered the room, Luna was locked outside. She pressed herself against the door, patting it with her two tiny paws. There was no response. Clearly, Sakura Miyajima had no intention of letting her in. The little cat scratched at the door for a while without success, then circled around to the outside window.
She discovered the window was tightly shut as well, with even the curtains drawn.
It was a perfectly airtight defense————
Of course. Sakura Miyajima had prepared for this moment for a very long time, solely to have Kazuma to herself. Naturally, she wouldn’t allow any accidents to happen. The little cat searched for a long time but found no openings. In the end, she lowered her head dejectedly and turned to leave.
Luna obviously knew what her master was doing inside. She was no longer the ignorant, clueless cat she once was. She understood everything perfectly well. Actually, she wasn’t jealous, nor did she want to monopolize her master.
After all, during all this time, she had seen her master together with those human girls many times. She also understood that in her current state, she still couldn’t be with her master like that. But couldn’t you at least let me in? I just want to watch from the side.
Let me learn a little more!
At most, I’d only taste Master’s essence. Damn it, you won’t even give me that chance.
"Stupid Luna, what are you complaining about? At least you can still taste the essence of Master in some ways. Unlike me, I can’t even do that much," Anna said gloomily while patting her sharp beak. "I want to evolve into a human form even more than you do."
"Why did I have to be born a bird? I hate it, I really hate it."
Little Anna hopped around wildly on the branch, filled with resentment toward her own species.
"Stop complaining too. If we’re talking about pitiful, Kana has it the worst," the little cat muttered as she walked toward the Old School Building on her short legs. "At least we can stay by Master’s side. She can only remain in the back mountain and the Old School Building, and she barely gets to see Master during the day."
Given the snake girl’s enormous size, if she came out, there probably wouldn’t be a school left anymore.
"That’s true..."
The students occasionally passing by were already used to seeing the little cat. Stray cats were common. Some female students tried to pick her up, but Luna nimbly dodged them. The number of troublesome students gradually decreased as she approached the Old School Building.
"But Anna, why are you here? Shouldn’t you be at the hospital? Did you sneak away from your post again?" Luna asked in a lecturing tone as she continued walking.
The little bird, Anna, suddenly stopped moving. Strange. Normally she’d immediately argue back or complain. Luna was already used to that. Why was she so quiet today?
Anna stood on a utility pole, looking elsewhere.
"Chirp chirp chirp————"
"Hey, speak properly. Pretending to be dumb won’t work."
"Chirp chirp chirp————"
She continued making silly bird noises, as if she had truly become an ignorant little bird, perfectly blending in with the other birds nearby.
"If you keep this up, I’m telling Master!"
This time, however, Anna couldn’t hold back anymore. She didn’t even chirp. Instead, she stared at the black cat with a speechless, disdainful look. Luna is usually pretty sharp. Why is she being so stupid right now?
She really is a dumb cat!
She seriously hasn’t noticed the person standing behind her!
Still, Anna’s strange behavior finally made Luna suspicious. Seeing the bird constantly staring behind her, Luna slowly turned around and saw a blue-haired girl standing three meters away, silently staring at her expressionlessly.
The black cat instantly froze in shock.
Why is there someone behind me?!
No, more importantly, why didn’t I sense her presence at all? Luna broke out in a cold sweat, her thoughts screaming in panic. It’s over—she definitely heard me talking just now!
This is weird. My senses should be extremely sharp. I’ve already evolved and can detect human presence. Yet I didn’t notice this girl at all. Luna seriously began doubting whether her evolution was fake.
The girl’s shoulder-length blue hair gently swayed in the wind. Her slender figure looked somewhat frail. Her face was pretty, with delicate features, while her large amber-colored eyes shimmered faintly.
The only issue was her expression—it wasn’t exactly cold, but rather completely emotionless. As though she were some kind of tool without feelings, incapable of showing any unnecessary emotions.
It made Luna wonder whether the girl had even heard her speaking just now. Otherwise, how could she remain so calm?
Aside from that, the girl’s figure was fairly modest as well. Not only compared to Akane Nanao or Shijou Anri—even Izumi Nogami was more developed than her. Judging by appearance alone, she was probably only around a D-cup.
Normally, a D-cup isn’t considered small, but in this world, it was rather average.
Of course, that didn’t lessen the girl’s charm in the slightest. Although her chest wasn’t as impressive as Kanna Hiiragi’s, her appeal was still outstanding. The girl walked over to the cat, her beautiful amber eyes fixed intently on her.
Then, she opened her cherry-red lips and spoke in a flat, emotionless voice.
"You spoke."
"Meow?"
She really had heard it!
Luna was so startled that she almost turned and ran away, but then she realized that fleeing would only confirm she could talk. That would definitely cause trouble for her Master. So Luna bravely met the girl’s gaze, putting on an innocent expression as she let out another meow.
Everything before was just your imagination. This is the real meow.
"You spoke."
The expressionless girl continued staring at her, clearly unconvinced by Luna’s act, and repeated herself. That emotionless gaze terrified Luna. What was wrong with this girl? Why was she so strange?
Luna found herself completely unable to sense this person’s presence. Unlike everyone else, this girl felt as elusive as a ghost.
"Meow, meow, meow?"
Luna tilted her head and made an adorably confused expression. When did I ever speak? Look, I only meow, okay?
"Did I hallucinate?" Seeing the black cat’s bewildered and innocent look, the girl began doubting herself. "How could a cat speak human language?"
Yes, exactly. How could a cat possibly speak human language? It was all your imagination.
Luna secretly breathed a sigh of relief.
Then she saw the girl squat down.
"So, this isn’t an ordinary cat. Say something again and prove I wasn’t hallucinating."
"Meow——"
"No, not that."
"..."
You’re so annoying!
I already told you it was just your imagination! Don’t take it seriously!
"I’ve heard there are incredible supernatural beings inside the Old School Building: ghosts, yokai, monsters..."
The girl remained expressionless and calm. Was she on her way to the Old School Building?
"So, are you one of them?"
Luna was exhausted. What was wrong with this girl? Her way of thinking was completely different from normal people. She was unbelievably strange. It was Luna’s first time meeting such a troublesome girl.
Even Mira Tsubakihara wasn’t this troublesome.
Just as Luna was about to lose her mind, a savior finally appeared.
"Luna, how did you end up here? Huh?"
Kazuma had just finished spending time with Miyajima-senpai and left the Kendo Club. When he came looking for Luna, he found this scene: a blue-haired girl squatting in front of his cat.
He still had no idea what was happening.
The blue-haired girl turned toward him, and when she saw Kazuma, her eyes flickered slightly.
"Are you her owner?"
Kazuma glanced at Luna, who was desperately winking at him, then at Anna, who was standing on a utility pole trying not to laugh while clearly enjoying the show. After pausing for a second, he quickly forced a polite smile onto his face.
"Yes, she’s my cat. Is something wrong? Did she cause any trouble?"
"It spoke."
"Meow~"
Luna puffed out her cute little cheeks, showing an innocent and confused expression while flicking her tail, as if she had no idea what the girl was talking about.
The emotionless girl remained perfectly calm.
"You’re its owner, so you should know, right?"
Oh, so Luna had been exposed.
Was this little cat really that careless? Someone actually heard her talking? Kazuma instantly understood the whole situation. No wonder Luna was panicking so much.
He raised an eyebrow as countless thoughts flashed through his mind, though only a second had passed in reality.
Then he quickly put on a serious and sincere expression.
"Classmate, how could a cat possibly speak?"
"This isn’t a manga or a game. But your imagination is pretty interesting. Even though you’re already in high school, there’s nothing wrong with keeping some childlike innocence. I understand."
The girl stared at Kazuma for a long while before nodding.
"So you do know it can speak."
Kazuma nearly lost control of his expression.
No, how did you even reach that conclusion? Can you read minds or something?
"Classmate, cats can’t talk. Although my Luna is a bit smarter than average, there’s no way she could defy the laws of nature," Kazuma explained with a strained smile.
"I know. That’s why it isn’t an ordinary cat."
Her tone remained completely flat.
"You’re its owner. Can you make it speak again? I want to hear it."
Faced with the blue-haired girl’s incredibly serious request, Kazuma’s expression turned solemn.
This girl was difficult to deal with.
Looking at her emotionless face, Kazuma realized he couldn’t read her thoughts at all. On the contrary, those calm and crystal-clear eyes of hers made it seem as though she could see right through him. Yet she was obviously just an ordinary person... right?
Kazuma suddenly realized he had met his match.
This girl was definitely special.
Damn it. If only I had a mind-reading item, I’d deal with you in minutes...
Wait, she looks a little familiar.
"What’s your name?"
"Name?"
The expressionless girl blinked.
"Suzu."
Alright, Kazuma immediately understood who she was.
Another heroine. And an emotionless one at that.
