Chapter 44: Chapter 44: Give Them a Surprise

The entire private room fell silent for several minutes. After all, no one had expected things to suddenly escalate to this point.

Leo Flynn and Joshua Hale snapped back to reality. They quickly helped Vincent Reed up and took him to the back to get cleaned up. Wyatt Shaw’s pants had also been splattered, so Joshua Hale gave him a pair of his own.

"You guys don’t need to worry about me. I’ll just go to the next room to change," Wyatt Shaw said.

Joshua Hale nodded. Seeing Wyatt Shaw was still so clear-headed after three bottles of hard liquor, he couldn’t help but say admiringly, "I had no idea you could hold your liquor so well."

Wyatt Shaw shrugged. "It’s nothing special."

As soon as Joshua Hale left, Wyatt Shaw leaned on Yvonne Sutton’s shoulder.

"I think I might be drunk."

Yvonne Sutton turned her head and kissed him. "Thank you."

"What for?"

"Thank you for defending me."

"Don’t thank me."

"Huh?"

"It’s my duty as a man."

Yvonne Sutton blushed and gave him a little push. "Hurry up and go change. I’m going to walk Claire out to her car."

At the bar, Claire Lawrence was already so sleepy she had dozed off. Yvonne Sutton went over and patted her.

"Claire, it’s time to go home."

Claire Lawrence stood up, yawning. "What took you so long?"

"I was playing waitress for a bit."

"Let me take you home, then. I’ve called for a designated driver."

Yvonne Sutton shook her head. "It’d be a huge detour for you to take me home. I... I have company."

"Oh, you mean you’re getting a ride from Leo Flynn, right? That works too." Claire Lawrence didn’t think much of it.

Yvonne Sutton walked Claire Lawrence to the tavern entrance and only came back after watching her get into the car. She walked up to the private room, and just as she was about to push the door open, it was pulled open from the inside. Wyatt Shaw pulled her in.

"We should be heading back."

He suddenly picked her up, placed her on the table, and lowered his head to kiss her. His breath carried the strong scent of alcohol, but it wasn’t unpleasant. In fact, it was rather intoxicating to her.

Wrong place, wrong time, but she still wrapped her arms around his neck and returned his kiss.

Passion ignited, quickly becoming an uncontrollable blaze.

Until they heard voices outside, heading in their direction.

"Where’s Yvonne Sutton?" That was Joshua Hale’s voice.

"Probably left with Claire," Leo Flynn replied.

"Wyatt Shaw should still be in the room. I’ll take Vincent, you take him."

"Okay."

As he spoke, Leo Flynn walked over and knocked on the private room door.

"Shaw, let me give you a ride home."

Yvonne Sutton gave Wyatt Shaw a push, then leaned against his chest, panting.

"Leo Flynn and the others don’t know about us yet."

"Then we’ll give them a surprise when we get married."

As Wyatt Shaw spoke, he lowered his head and gave Yvonne Sutton a hard kiss. Then he took off his jacket, draped it over her head, lifted her off the table, and pulled her into his arms before walking out just like that.

Leo Flynn was standing outside and saw Wyatt Shaw come out, holding someone in his arms.

"Who’s this?" He blinked, his brain failing to process the scene for a moment.

Wyatt Shaw cleared his throat. "This is my fiancée."

"You’re getting married?"

"That’s right." Wyatt Shaw turned his head to kiss the top of Yvonne Sutton’s head. "She’s a little shy. I’ll formally introduce you all later."

"Uh, okay. That works."

Outside the tavern, Vincent Reed was still on a drunken rampage.

"Where’s Yvonne Sutton? Where is she? I want her in front of me right now!"

Joshua Hale was getting a massive headache from him. "Yvonne Sutton already went home."

"Wh-why would she leave me? Tell her to get her ass back here!"

Wyatt Shaw leaned close to Yvonne Sutton’s ear and whispered, "When you broke up with him, you should’ve cut out his tongue."

Just then, Mr. Webb drove up. Wyatt Shaw waved goodbye to Leo Flynn.

"I’ll send you the wedding invitation later."

Leo Flynn nodded. "Right, when are you getting married?" Leo Flynn asked Wyatt Shaw before he got in the car.

"The sixth of the ninth month."

"The sixth of the ninth month for you too? Then we’re getting married on the same day!"

"The same day? That’s great."

Leo Flynn scratched his head. ’Why does everyone like this date so much? It’s a lucky day, sure, but this is too much of a coincidence.’

Watching Wyatt Shaw get into the car with his arm around his fiancée, Leo Flynn couldn’t help but feel that her silhouette looked a bit familiar.

Once inside the car, Wyatt Shaw took the jacket off her head and saw Yvonne Sutton looking up at him. She was beautiful, and her eyes were especially bright. The way she looked at him, it was as if he was the only person in her world.

Wyatt Shaw couldn’t resist leaning in to kiss her, but Yvonne Sutton covered his mouth with her hand.

She gave a playful smile and kissed the back of her own hand, which was still covering his lips. He smiled too. He couldn’t say why, but seeing her smile made him want to smile with her.

"What are you smiling at?" Yvonne Sutton asked.

Wyatt Shaw thought for a moment. "I’m happy. What are you smiling at?"

"I’m happy too."

The car had driven for a while when Mr. Webb’s phone rang.

"Mr. Shaw, may I take this call? It’s my wife."

"Of course. Find a place to pull over."

"Thank you."

Mr. Webb had a worried look on his face; he must have suspected something was wrong at home. He pulled the car over to the side of the road up ahead and quickly answered the phone.

It turned out his daughter had suddenly started complaining of a stomachache. His wife had rushed her to the hospital, and it was appendicitis—she needed surgery. His wife was alone and a little scared.

"Go to the hospital. We’ll take a taxi home," Wyatt Shaw said.

"I should take you two back to the villa first, then rush to the hospital," Mr. Webb said.

"Mr. Webb, just go straight to the hospital. Don’t worry about us."

As Yvonne Sutton spoke, she opened the car door and got out. Wyatt Shaw followed her.

Mr. Webb thanked them and hurried off.

Yvonne Sutton looked around and saw a subway entrance right behind them.

"Let’s take the subway, then."

The two of them got on the subway, surprised to see so many people at this hour. After two stops, they finally found a place to sit, but just as they sat down, an old lady carrying a bamboo basket on her back got on. Wyatt Shaw gave her his seat.

"Thank you, young man."

The bamboo basket was cumbersome, so Wyatt Shaw helped her take it off her back.

After the old lady sat down, she placed the bamboo basket in front of her. Yvonne Sutton glanced inside and saw it was full of some green vegetables.

"I grew them myself. I wanted to sell them at the market, but they wouldn’t let me in, so I could only sell them outside. I didn’t manage to sell much." The old lady sighed as she spoke.

Wyatt Shaw crouched down and peered at the vegetables inside. "They look pretty fresh."

"Of course they’re fresh. I picked them this morning."

"How much a pound?"

"A dollar."

"That cheap?" Wyatt Shaw clicked his tongue and shook his head.

"Is being cheap a bad thing?"

"You get what you pay for."

The old lady was not happy to hear that. She said she grew the vegetables herself, from seed to harvest, and absolutely didn’t use any pesticides. She added that at her age, she would never cheat anyone, or it would weigh on her conscience.

When the old lady got worked up, she even slapped her chest twice.

Yvonne Sutton saw Wyatt Shaw’s sly grin and realized he was obviously teasing the old woman.

"Please don’t get upset, Ma’am. He’s just joking," Yvonne Sutton said quickly.

The old lady shot Wyatt Shaw a look, then turned to Yvonne Sutton. "Young lady, is this your boyfriend?"

"Yes," Yvonne Sutton nodded.

"Let me tell you something. You young ladies can’t just go by looks when you’re dating. Look at him, pretty as a flower. He’s probably full of bad intentions."

Yvonne Sutton couldn’t stop laughing. "Ma’am, you’re absolutely right." freēwēbnovel.com

Wyatt Shaw scoffed. "Ma’am, this whole basket of vegetables—I’ll take it."

As soon as she heard that, the old lady, who had been about to insult him some more, completely changed her tune. "Oh, you’ll take them? See, I told you! Good-looking people can’t be bad-hearted. I’ll give you a discount!"

"No need. I only eat expensive things."

The old lady froze for a second, then turned to Yvonne Sutton and asked, "Is there something wrong with your boyfriend?"
