Chapter 43: Chapter 43: Drinking Contest
Yvonne Sutton marveled at how small the world was as she carried the wine and walked with Leo Flynn toward the private room.
"Who organized this get-together tonight?" she asked.
"Joshua, but it’s really for Vincent. He’s too proud to do it himself. The Rhodes Group has a project that The Reed Group has been trying to land a partnership on, but it’s not going well. And the person in charge of that project is Wyatt Shaw," Leo Flynn said.
Yvonne Sutton nodded. ’So their attempt to curry favor with Silas Rhodes a while back must have failed, and now they’re trying to build a connection with Wyatt Shaw. But Wyatt is just an employee. Even if he’s the person in charge, it’s not like he has the final say, right?’
"Yvonne, just give me the wine in a bit. You shouldn’t go in," Leo Flynn said.
Yvonne Sutton snorted. "No way. I want to watch the drama unfold."
Leo Flynn sighed. "Vincent is really set off by Wyatt Shaw. He might say some nasty things to you."
"How did Wyatt provoke him?"
"Wyatt doesn’t have to do anything. Just him being there is enough to set Vincent off. It’s like a conditioned reflex. Since they were kids, Vincent was always being compared to Wyatt, but he was crushed by him in every single way. It wasn’t until college, when Wyatt went to study abroad, that he finally escaped Wyatt’s shadow."
"So that’s why he suddenly lost his mind and said all that stuff just now?"
"Ahem, well, that’s actually my fault. I have a big mouth. I was just talking about high school, how all the girls in school had a crush on Wyatt Shaw, including Wendy."
"Wendy Winters had a crush on Wyatt Shaw?"
"She even confessed to him in public, but Wyatt ruthlessly shot her down."
"Ha, I can’t believe something like that happened."
Leo Flynn let out a sigh. "You have no idea how embarrassed Wendy was. She was so confident, thinking Wyatt would definitely say yes. Instead, she became the laughingstock of the whole school."
At this point, Leo Flynn began to imitate the mocking words Wyatt had said to Wendy Winters back then.
"Aren’t you Vincent’s girlfriend? Ha, or are you not? If you’re not, then what’s the point of having him follow you around, wagging his tail like a dog? Sorry, I can’t understand your sick little games. I, for one, prefer to act like a human. You should try it sometime!"
Yvonne Sutton burst out laughing. She could only imagine how mortified Wendy Winters must have been.
’Still, those words were clearly meant to stand up for Vincent Reed. But knowing Vincent and his attitude, he probably couldn’t even tell Wyatt was on his side.’
When they reached the private room, Wyatt Shaw and Vincent Reed were already drinking. Joshua Hale was trying to mediate, but no one was listening to him.
"Bring the wine over!" Vincent Reed shouted boisterously.
Leo Flynn brought the wine over, uncapping a bottle as he tried to reason with Vincent. "Vincent, old classmates get together to catch up. There’s no need to drink so much."
"Drinking is a way of catching up," Vincent Reed sneered, then looked at Yvonne Sutton. "You, sit here. Pour for me."
Yvonne Sutton scoffed and walked straight over to Wyatt Shaw’s side instead.
She poured him a glass and whispered, "Don’t drink too much." ƒreewebɳovel.com
Under the table, Wyatt hooked his finger around her hand, a wicked grin spreading across his face.
"Just watch. I’ll get revenge for you in a bit."
"You two don’t even know each other. What are you talking about?" Vincent Reed asked, a hint of suspicion in his voice.
Wyatt tilted his head and smiled. "I was asking this young lady if she has a boyfriend."
"What’s it to you?"
"Of course it’s my business. If she doesn’t, I plan on pursuing her."
Vincent Reed’s hand tightened fiercely around his glass. He then yelled at Yvonne Sutton, "Get over here!"
Yvonne completely ignored him, instead looking at Wyatt and saying, "I don’t have a boyfriend."
"Then can I pursue you?"
"Of course."
The moment Yvonne’s words fell, Vincent Reed grabbed a bottle and slammed it on the table. "Isn’t this a drinking contest? Let’s go!"
Wyatt turned to look at Vincent, a smile on his face, but his eyes had turned cold.
"Bring it on."
Yvonne stood by Wyatt’s side, pouring his drinks, while Leo poured for Vincent.
The two went back and forth, one glass after another, and soon a bottle was empty.
Yvonne remembered Wyatt saying he didn’t like to drink, so his tolerance probably wasn’t very good. She began to worry.
"Maybe you should stop," she whispered.
Wyatt placed his empty glass on the table. "Don’t worry. I’m going to drink him under the table tonight!"
"First one to pass out is a little bitch!" Vincent Reed roared, fury building inside him as he watched Yvonne whisper to Wyatt.
They each opened another bottle, which was emptied just as quickly. Vincent was already struggling to sit upright, his body sliding down in his chair.
"Keep pouring! Pour!"
Leo grabbed him and pulled him up. "Vincent, maybe you should just call it a night."
"Get out of my way!" Vincent shoved Leo aside and pointed at Yvonne. "You! Get over here!"
Yvonne gave him a cool glance, her eyes filled only with disgust.
"Stop fucking throwing yourself at every man you see! You’re my woman!"
At that, Wyatt suddenly picked up a glass and hurled it at Vincent. The glass didn’t hit him, but it whizzed past his cheek and shattered against the wall behind his head.
For a moment, Vincent was stunned into silence, while everyone else looked on in shock.
"Wyatt, what are you doing?" Joshua Hale asked with a slight frown.
Wyatt kicked a nearby chair. "I’m sick of his filthy mouth!"
Joshua glanced at Yvonne. He couldn’t argue with that. Vincent, provoked as he was, had indeed said many things to humiliate Yvonne tonight.
Wyatt grabbed a bottle of hard liquor, twisted off the cap, and raised it toward Vincent. "If you’re still a man, let’s chug these straight from the bottle!"
Vincent’s eyes were bloodshot. He wanted to rise to his feet with a flourish, but his legs were weak, and it took him two tries to get up. He grabbed a bottle from the side, shouting that he was ready to go.
Leo and Joshua tried to stop him, but he pushed them both away.
Then, both men raised their bottles at the same time and started chugging.
This was hard liquor, and chugging it straight from the bottle was something few people could handle, especially since they had already been drinking heavily. Sure enough, partway through, Vincent started to vomit before collapsing back into his chair.
Wyatt, on the other hand, paused a few times for breath but still managed to finish the entire bottle. When he was done, he smashed it on the floor.
"Vincent Reed, is that all you’ve got?"
"You... you’re not allowed to laugh at me... I... I didn’t lose..." Vincent was completely drunk.
Wyatt scoffed, gave Yvonne a subtle tug, and the two of them started to head out. Just as they were passing Vincent, he suddenly lunged up and threw himself toward Yvonne.
Wyatt immediately stepped in front of Yvonne, pushing Vincent back as he lunged. freēwēbηovel.c૦m
Vincent fell to his knees, yanking the tablecloth down with him. The dishes, tea, and wine on the table all slid off, spilling all over him.
The mix of food, tea, and liquor created a disgusting smell. Lying in the middle of it all, Vincent Reed looked like just another piece of trash.
But seeing Vincent in such a pathetic state, Yvonne couldn’t help but be taken aback. Because as he lay there on the floor, he actually started to cry.
"Yvonne, Yvonne, take me home."
’She had dated Vincent Reed for eight years and had never seen him like this. It seemed the shadow Wyatt Shaw cast over him was truly immense. She was even starting to get curious about why Wyatt had beaten him up all those years ago.’
"Yvonne! Yvonne!"
He kept calling her name, as if she were the only one who could help him salvage his masculine pride.
