Chapter 4: 10 million humans dead at the end

Levon calmly expected the normal interface to appear, but instead a general summary of the completion of phase one appeared on everyone’s interface at exactly the same time.

[Phase One Completed]

Levon read each stat carefully.

"Wow... my luck nearly doubled," he muttered.

His talent depended heavily on luck. Seeing it rise so sharply eased some of the tension in his chest. Even his combat strength had surged far beyond what he expected from a single phase.

Coins could wait. What mattered now was the real reward.

Levon held his breath.

This was the moment that truly mattered.

Levon slowly raised his head, stunned.

A rare mutation... during the first phase?

That level of luck bordered on absurd.

The remaining items showed no further changes. After waiting a moment longer, Levon finally closed the system interface.

At least now he knew something: not all items get mutated, or perhaps it depended heavily on luck.

[30, 29...]

Levon was brought back to reality. This was far from being finished, at least not yet.

Looking around, Levon could tell that most players were in distress; some had nearly run out of HP and were too exhausted to care much about anything.

Levon sighed and tossed away his kitchen knives; at least he had finally gotten a usable sword.

Levon summoned the venomous sword from his system space. freeweɓnovel.cøm

It materialized in his right hand, looking as sharp and graceful as a sword could be.

It had a deep red handle, and the blade itself was outlined with that same red color.

Levon’s eyes burned with resolve as he looked at the sword that had materialized before him. This time around he was not going to hold back; he was giving it everything he had.

Killing 18 creatures was not bad, but he needed to do more; he needed to surpass every single player present in the game.

Looking around one last time, Levon could tell that only a few people had gotten any decent equipment during the first phase of the competition.

Just as Levon was looking around and biding his time, his eyes finally landed on Draven.

A boy with silky hair and a cold demeanor, he stood far from the crowd, closest to the entrance of the safe zone.

He had an axe in his left hand, his eyes dead set on the monsters beyond the safe zone, as if he intended to obliterate every last one of them.

Levon knew too well that he was going to be one of the strongest humans in this game. In his past life, during the descent of the first god, he was one of the only people who stood up to the angels and the celestials that followed.

Back then his talent was one of the most broken, as he could literally steal skills and attributes from other players.

’Well, I wished for that talent, but I’m more than satisfied with what I’ve gotten,’ Levon thought with a straight face as his grip on the sword tightened.

This time around, nothing was going to stop him from ascending to godhood, which players would later discover was the only way to truly survive in the game.

God’s Descent was that brutal; no one was meant to survive. No one.

[Second phase in 3, 2... 1]

Levon’s eyes snapped back to full focus as he headed straight toward the now collapsing safe border.

His sword gripped tightly in hand.

Unlike the first wave, the second wave was even more chaotic.

In the first wave he could get the first two attacks in before the creatures reacted, but that was not the case in the second wave. This time around, the beasts came after you first.

Squishhh.

Levon stabbed hard into the chest of a level three goblin.

But unlike with the knife he had been using, it wasn’t clean; there was a lot of resistance.

Levon was caught off guard, but there was no time to think. He immediately yanked his sword out of the goblin. There were many more creatures attacking him, so why waste time trying to figure out the weapon’s defect?

Levon kept fighting fiercely, not letting the issue with the sword bother him at all. Before long, the second phase finally came to an end.

But instead of the five-minute break that came with the previous phase, this time the safe zone only materialized for a few seconds before closing back in on them.

Levon took note of the transition and didn’t let it throw him off as he knocked down even more creatures.

He was finally getting the hang of his new weapon.

Since the brief description said the weapon carried poison, Levon stopped wasting energy trying to cut deep into creatures.

He simply sliced through them quickly and leaped back, then did exactly the same thing again, letting the poison do the rest of the work.

Levon kept up this rhythm for the remainder of the phase; as more and more creatures fell, it became much faster and easier to manage.

[Beginner’s trial ending in 10, 9...]

As soon as the system countdown started, panic spread through everyone.

They all knew the implications too well; it was already spelled out.
