Chapter 72: Chapter 72: Roe vs Lot
Roe had begun a match.
Could he follow up on it was the question.
He had started something, now it was time to see if he could finish it.
His mana beam only looked like it had connected. It only looked like it had done damage, but in actuality it had achieved nothing.
Lot had slowed down the attack before it made contact, dodging it easily.
He fired pulses, hoping one would connect so he could use an energy attack. None connected.
He wasn’t making any progress.
When the pulses approached Lot, they would immediately slow down upon reaching a particular range.
"It’s not a regular spell, alright," Roe thought.
Why am I even doing this? I’m not usually this proactive.
No, I should just stop and apologize, he thought.
Something in Roe chose to disregard the thought.
"790," he chanted, summoning the field.
He did this to prevent those outside from suffering from their attacks, namely Arthur, Perzeus, and Andrew, as they were all currently unpowered.
This was a lie.
This wasn’t why he activated the field. He only told himself this.
He set up the field because he wanted to have a fair fight against Lot. He’d been itching to have a go ever since Lot screwed him over for Sigman.
He had been trying to be mature, as he’d always been. This just wasn’t cutting it for him anymore.
He wanted to cut loose a bit.
He began firing beam after beam, none of them really connecting.
"Why are you wasting time like this?" Lot shouted.
"I’m not wasting time," he replied.
"Really? So you think this tantrum of yours will actually result in something?" Lot asked.
"I think?"
"Oh no. I know. Just you wait," he added.
The beams were not connecting, but this wasn’t exactly an issue, as they were destroying the walls behind Lot, leaving rubble behind him.
This was limiting his options. Eventually Lot wouldn’t be able to dodge via his sides. He would have to take the fight to Roe, just as Roe was coming his way.
Roe summoned an electrical charge. He hurled the attack straight for Lot.
He wasn’t much of a math person, but he knew the speed of electricity was not comparable to normal attacks.
Lot would have to increase the factor of how much he was slowing down time.
He expected more than he got. Yes, electricity was faster, a lot so, but not to the point where it would matter against someone like Lot.
"Was that your big idea? Okay, you’ve tried. Now that’s enough."
Lot descended.
He was now on the ground, approaching Roe.
"For me, it’s how you don’t take me seriously," Roe said. freewebnovel.cσ๓
"That’s what ticks me off."
After Roe used the electric charge, he wasn’t with his staff anymore.
Just then, he called for his staff. This time he didn’t call it to him.
He spawned it directly on top of Lot, all charged with a beam ready to be discharged.
"What’s so funny?" Lot asked, noticing Roe’s demeanor.
"You’re smiling. Why?"
Roe gave no response. He just looked up, and immediately the beam landed.
"Even you couldn’t have withstood an attack like that," Roe noted.
The explosion was the biggest so far.
"That’s not how time works," Roe heard. It was a voice. He immediately knew it was Lot.
"I can’t really entertain you right now. I’ll try though."
Lot summoned his own staff. He began charging.
Roe responded in kind, charging up his own attack.
Ten seconds. Both mages stood opposite each other. The tension was felt by those outside the barrier field.
They released their blasts at about the same time.
It connected. One of them was sent smashing and crashing till he hit the field.
Roe was an SSS rank mage. He had more mana than S ranks. He also had higher output than literally any other mage, as evident during the evaluation.
Roe was also the mage sent crashing into his own field.
"How?" he struggled to say.
He felt his consciousness fading.
He had spells. He knew he hadn’t gone all out.
"Oh. You’re wondering why you didn’t win that beam struggle from earlier. Well, it’s simple. While you were solely depending on your mana output..."
"Mana output, which in itself is a fundamental ability, I supplemented my own beam with a spell."
"I sped up the rate at which my staff released the pressurized mana," Lot said.
"You’ll learn tricks like this with years of experience."
Lot wasn’t angry. He was surprisingly calm about the whole matter.
Roe was about to lose consciousness. Before he did, he said something.
"When I asked how, I wasn’t asking how you won the clash."
"I meant how did I pass through the field?"
"I crashed through this time. The last two times I passed softly."
Roe fainted.
He was referring to the evaluation when he was able to freely enter and exit the force field of his own will. He should have crashed softly, or at least the field should have rejected him.
Either way, he lost.
Lot looked at Arthur, Perzeus, and Andrew. He told them he would restore them after he had gotten Chris to safety, to prevent them from trying anything stupid.
He carried Roe.
He noticed they didn’t say anything. No comment.
He found it strange, but he didn’t bother to ask.
Just before he left, he was sent flying by a beam attack.
"What?" he lamented as he crawled out of the wall he crashed into.
Those guys don’t have abilities, he thought as he ran back into the room. freёwebnovel.com
He noticed they were still kids. It obviously wasn’t them who initiated the attack.
That’s when he saw it.
He couldn’t help but smile.
"He’s just like his master. He’s a one-trick pony," Lot commented.
He had noticed Roe’s staff flying. The staff should have been returned. Roe was unconscious.
The staff didn’t return because Roe had remotely activated a beam to go off at that moment.
"It’s a cool move. Just don’t make it your signature, kid," Lot said as he picked Roe up again.
Just then, another beam was fired.
This time it didn’t connect.
"Don’t push it," Lot said. He had blocked the beam using a time reversal spell.
He nodded.
This time he waited and the staff disappeared. No more remote spells to be activated.
"Some kid," Lot said as he left for the temple.
