Chapter 27: Chapter 27: The test continues
"Zach made contact with Max."
Max didn’t understand. It didn’t feel weird, so he didn’t bother. He wasn’t going to make a big deal out of what seemed like nothing.
"Whatever you’ve got planned, let’s speed things up. It’s just a minute we’ll get after all."
Zach nodded.
Max noticed he was looking at something. He just couldn’t tell what exactly.
That didn’t bother him.
He just wanted to move on.
[First Talent]. The notification read.
[Talents will begin at Tier One.]
[System synchronization set.]
’I should have set it all up yesterday. I guess I didn’t know it would take this much time.’
[Tier 1 Talent - Addition and Subtraction Based.]
"Whatever."
"Here. Ice + Wind."
He said.
[Stabilizing.]
[Stabilizing.]
[First Talent Created.]
A massive jolt of energy was emitted. The entire realm shook.
None of them understood again.
None but Solomon.
"Was that Merlin?" They all asked.
Before things could get out of control, Solomon calmed everyone.
"It’s ok. It’s ok. Let’s continue on with the tests. That’s all sorted out right now."
He said.
’First yesterday, now another today,’ Roe thought.
’That can’t be Merlin.’ freeweɓnøvel.com
’It’s definitely something else, isn’t it?’
[Stabilization Complete.]
[Winter Talent Evolved.]
Zach sighed. It seemed to take a lot out of him.
"I’ve got this. I’ll steal the staff, you just retrace Roe’s steps from back then. Got that?"
Max just nodded in compliance.
’Winter Talent. Let’s go then,’ Zach thought.
Description: The Winter Talent commands and generates cold gusts of wind. It’s capable of creating massive forces like the Wind Talent before it, as well as generating ice like the Talent before it.
[All generated talents have special properties, even in the case of Tier 1 Talents.]
’I thought so,’ Zach said.
’Here’s to hoping it affects mana reading. I can’t let Max know. I guess I’ll blend it with his ice spells,’ Zach thought.
"Let’s go."
"Remember, I go up close. You attack from wherever, just wait till I get the staff to you."
"We’re going to be the first team to actually ace this."
Zach said.
From the stands, the other students were amazed.
"This team took the most planning time. It would be so funny if it was all for nothing," Edward said.
Sigman squinted. He found it strange Zach was going this far.
"I didn’t take him for that kind of guy, I guess."
"Ice Talent..."
A massive surge of icicles emerged.
Max didn’t make the same mistake Modred made. He accounted for the dip in his reserves and possibly output.
Zach didn’t chant.
In an instant, the icicles could barely be seen.
There was just a snowstorm.
"What?" Max exclaimed.
"Wind Talent capable of producing this with that little amount of ice. That’s incredible."
"Such skill."
He remarked.
He began firing beams straight towards Solomon. He had noted his location just moments prior.
Solomon recognized the pattern.
"A repeat, seriously? What do they take me for?"
He said.
Footsteps.
"That’s it."
"Here it comes."
He was right. It was footsteps.
He turned.
"I can still follow."
The fog immediately came down. Everything was clear.
Max intuitively ran forward, expecting to see the staff.
He saw something, just not that.
Solomon changed his hold.
There was a massive frost giant in his path.
It emerged immediately the snow fog disappeared.
"He turned it into a giant. One spell, no less."
He readied to fire a mana beam.
Just before he released it, the fog reappeared instantly, not slowly. freeweɓnovel.cøm
A hit to the leg.
He fell.
His grip still not being strong as he wasn’t holding his staff the normal way. He assumed a spell stance. He was barely gripping the staff.
Zach stole it.
The fog disappeared one more time.
This time for real.
The throw. The catch. All in an instant and like clockwork.
The results were the same.
28 seconds.
Max and Zach began to siphon back their mana.
5 seconds in.
Zach was done.
"Come on. You’ve got this."
He encouraged Max.
He wasn’t going to make the same mistake Roe did.
He was wrong.
He made it.
Roe didn’t.
He wasn’t wrong when he thought Roe made a mistake. It’s just that Roe didn’t make it simply because of his own sheer mana quantity.
1 second.
"The first pair to successfully make it. Give it up for Zach and Max."
"Let’s hear it."
They both descended back down.
Lana called on the next pair.
They didn’t do much better than those who came before them.
She called the next.
It was Edward and Faux.
They had their plans laid out earlier.
It was just to execute.
-
2 minutes earlier.
"I’m a Space Talent mage."
Edward introduced himself.
"Well I’m Faux. Wind Talent."
"Ok."
"I have a spell that we can use to pretty much win this thing."
"I summon a portal, steal the staff. You hold him back with a little wind. I get back my mana. I hold him back, by means. You get back your mana."
"I don’t know if I like it," Faux said.
"It’ll work. It’ll work," Edward added.
"I’ll carry you, don’t worry."
"Huh?"
Faux was lost.
"Forget about it. Let’s just focus on doing what we can."
-
Now.
"Space Talent..."
A portal opened.
Solomon’s staff was stolen.
Edward had begun absorbing back his mana.
"Wind Talent. No. 74. Great Typhoon."
Faux chanted.
He was pushing Solomon back.
He smiled.
"Make it quick, Edward."
He said.
A step, then another.
"Wait. Is he fighting back?"
"What?"
Edward turned.
Solomon resisted the wind.
The spell now deactivated.
"What are you doing? Use some other spell!"
Edward shouted.
"I can’t. That’s all the mana I had in the tank."
"That’s what?"
Edward reacted.
He threw the staff over.
"Here, absorb for a while."
"I’ll hold him back."
He said.
’Why’s he giving us a hard time?’ Edward thought.
’We’re the first team to make contact with the staff that he’s pursuing after obtaining the staff. What gives?’
Edward thought.
"Space Talent..."
’Why just us?’
