Chapter 297: Chapter 297: Little Mo Speaks
By the time Su Li and Little Tang Mo were on their way back, the sky was growing dim, but it wasn’t completely dark yet.
The streets were nearly empty because of the cold. The few people who were out hurried along.
Su Li and Little Tang Mo had just finished eating, so they were still warm. That, plus the fact they were walking slowly to avoid slipping, made the cold bearable.
They were just a short distance from home when they heard a vendor’s cry from the alley across the street: "Black sesame soup!"
Both Su Li’s and Little Tang Mo’s eyes lit up.
Back then, black sesame soup was a rare and delicious treat.
Su Li loved it too. Black sesame soup was one of the most delicious foods available.
Aside from milk candies, it was also one of Little Tang Mo’s favorites.
He was already a foodie, and on a cold day like this, a bowl of hot black sesame soup was simply irresistible.
"Little Mo, do you want some?"
Su Li asked. Little Tang Mo nodded vigorously, standing on his tiptoes to peer across the street.
"Then Mom will go buy it." Su Li looked across the street. "There’s a pothole over there that makes it hard to walk, so you should stay here."
Su Li glanced at the owner of the small key-cutting and bike repair shop next to them, then took Little Tang Mo by the hand and pushed the door open to go inside.
"Boss."
"Ah, Sister Su, you’re here." Su Li and Little Tang Mo passed by every day, so they all knew each other.
"Boss, could you let Little Mo warm up here for a bit? I’m going to buy some black sesame soup."
"Oh, I just bought some myself. Go on, hurry."
The shopkeeper said with a friendly smile.
"Mom will be right back." Su Li smiled at Little Tang Mo, who was already sitting on a small stool by the fire, and then ran out.
"Has Little Mo eaten?" the shopkeeper asked while mending a shoe.
Little Tang Mo nodded, his eyes following Su Li’s back through the glass door.
The shopkeeper glanced up at him with a smile before lowering his head to get back to work.
Su Li crossed the road, walked a little further to get around a pothole that had been dug for some unknown reason, and entered the alley.
"Ma’am, I’d like two bowls."
The old woman’s business was booming. A group of children surrounded her, each holding a bowl and eating.
"You didn’t bring a bowl?"
"No. Can I buy the bowls too?"
Su Li craned her neck to look at the sesame soup and couldn’t help but swallow.
The woman looked at Su Li and shook her head. "No, you can’t. I’ll put it in a food container for you. I’ll be selling here again tomorrow, so you can just return it to me then."
The woman briskly took out a food container, filled it for Su Li, and put the lid on. "Remember to eat it quickly before it gets cold."
"Alright, thank you, Ma’am."
Su Li paid and hurriedly took it.
She hugged the container and ran out of the alley, listening to the woman’s shouts and thinking.
’It would be great if she came to sell here every day. If she did, I might just come to eat every day, too.’
Unfortunately, the woman only came for two days every few days. The rest of the time, she sold elsewhere.
Su Li went around the large pothole and stood by the side of the road, waiting to cross. frёewebnoѵel.ƈo๓
Su Li was looking across the street when, unexpectedly, a car she had previously let pass suddenly stopped right in front of her.
Before the car had even come to a complete stop, a door flew open. A hand shot out, grabbed Su Li’s arm, and started yanking her into the vehicle.
"Ah!" Su Li cried out, completely caught off guard. The food container in her hands fell to the ground.
Su Li stumbled and fell into a sitting position as she was pulled. Her attacker was practiced, immediately clamping a hand over her mouth and dragging her toward the car.
Su Li struggled desperately.
Just then, Little Tang Mo, who had been watching Su Li the entire time, saw what was happening. He shot to his feet and rushed outside.
"What’s wrong?" The shopkeeper, who had been focused on his work, looked up in confusion.
Little Tang Mo pointed ahead and looked back at the shopkeeper, frantic.
The shopkeeper, still inside, was baffled. "What is it?"
Little Tang Mo watched helplessly as the car began to move. Without a second thought, he charged after it, shouting.
"Mama!"
A hoarse, rusty-sounding voice escaped Little Tang Mo’s lips.
"Stop! Save my mama!"
Little Tang Mo kept screaming, not even realizing he was making a sound, as he ran desperately after the car.
In the quiet street, Little Tang Mo’s voice was exceptionally loud.
There weren’t many pedestrians, but the shops on both sides of the street were occupied.
Hearing the shouts, people came running out, including the shopkeeper from the store where Little Tang Mo had been waiting.
"What’s going on?"
"Mama! Save my mama!" Little Tang Mo yelled, pointing at the accelerating car as he sprinted.
"Hey, you in the car, stop!"
The entire street came alive. Shopkeepers from up and down the road poured out, all rushing toward the car.
The car swerved erratically. Amid the crowd’s shouts, accompanied by a pained scream, the car door was suddenly shoved open, and someone tumbled out.
"Ah!" The crowd gasped in unison.
The car paused for a split second before speeding away, not even bothering to close the door.
The person who had jumped and rolled out of the car was none other than Su Li.
Su Li had been caught off guard, and her attacker was incredibly strong, so she’d been dragged into the car in an instant.
Her body was restrained, and her mouth was covered.
For a moment, Su Li was completely immobilized.
She had never experienced a kidnapping like this before and was overcome with panic.
But just then, she heard Little Tang Mo’s voice coming from behind her.
So desperate.
His cries of "Mama," one after another, pierced through the loud noise of the car and reached her ears.
Su Li instantly calmed down. She stopped her haphazard struggling, grabbed the little finger of the hand covering her mouth, and bent it backward with all her might.
In that moment, her strength surged. She even heard the distinct CRACK of a bone snapping.
"AHH!" A blood-curdling scream erupted behind her.
The hands restraining her immediately loosened. Su Li slammed her head backward with all her force.
It struck the man behind her squarely on the chin.
Seizing the opportunity, Su Li threw open the car door and rolled out.
The car had already picked up speed; jumping out was no joke.
The world spun around her as she crashed heavily onto the ground.
"Oh my god, are you okay? Are you okay?"
"Someone go after that car!"
Amidst the babble of the crowd, Su Li lay on the ground, gritting her teeth as she tried to recover.
"Mama!" Little Tang Mo rushed to Su Li’s side, dropped to his knees, and hurriedly tried to hold her.
"Are you alright?" The crowd, talking all at once, helped Su Li up as they caught up to her.
But Su Li couldn’t see or hear anyone else. Her eyes were fixed on the Little Tang Mo in front of her, and she could only hear his voice.
Su Li sat up, ignoring the pain in her body, and grabbed Little Tang Mo’s arm.
"Little Mo, you can talk?"
"Mama, how are you? Are you okay?" Little Tang Mo was frantic, looking at the blood on Su Li’s forehead. He had been checking her over from head to toe, but he seemed to freeze when he heard her question.
"What?" he muttered to himself.
"Little Mo, you can talk!" Su Li hugged Little Tang Mo and burst into tears. ƒгeewёbnovel.com
"Little Mo, you can talk! You can talk! You can talk..."
The pain wracking her body told her she wasn’t dreaming. Little Mo was really talking!
Little Mo was talking!
Held by Su Li, Little Tang Mo listened to her sobs, still too dazed to process what was happening.
"I... I spoke?"
He said it in disbelief, clearly hearing his own voice.
Little Tang Mo froze for a second, then he, too, burst into tears.
"Mama! Mama..."
A moment ago, he hadn’t even realized he’d made a sound.
