Chapter 151: Chapter 151: Ruining a Reputation
Wen Ci was utterly confused.
She and Gu Che hadn’t had any physical contact at all. The clothes were still in her hands. How could someone twist it into her making a move on him?!
’Slandering my reputation in broad daylight.’
Her gaze immediately shifted toward the source of the voice. She saw Jiang Ye and Jiang Chen walking over from a short distance away, Jiang Ye’s jealousy plain to see.
"Don’t talk nonsense," Gu Che said, frowning.
Jiang Ye walked closer and linked her arm with Gu Che’s, looking at Wen Ci provocatively. "I’m not talking nonsense. Wen Ci is a married woman."
Wen Ci watched their intimate display.
In that moment, everything clicked.
’So, the boyfriend Jiang Ye had back in high school was Gu Che.’
Wen Ci rolled her eyes at the pair, withdrawing the clothes she was about to hand over. "Since it’s not needed," she said blandly, "then I won’t offer."
After she spoke, Jiang Chen stared at Wen Ci in astonishment.
The truck before them was loaded with at least several thousand articles of clothing. He had a good idea of how much money their mother had given Wen Ci, and his tone was imperious, leaving no room for argument:
"Where did you get so much money?"
Wen Ci sneered, "What does it have to do with you whether I have money or not?"
"You’re my sister. What’s wrong with asking a couple of questions?"
As soon as he said this, the family members around them who were browsing the clothes instantly looked at Wen Ci. They had seen the other girl with Captain Jiang earlier and had assumed she was his sister.
But it turned out the young woman standing by the truck was the real one. A few of them carefully compared the siblings’ faces, noting the resemblance, especially in their eyes and brows. One said with a smile, "Is this a special benefit from Minister Jiang?"
Wen Ci denied it. "No."
’Although I’m officially a daughter of the Jiang Family, this business venture has nothing to do with them. The only reason I came to the family courtyard to sell was to build a reputation for my brand in the market.’
Wen Ci’s eyes curved into a smile. "Aunties and Uncles, if you have any other relatives who want to buy, I’ll be waiting for everyone at the market tomorrow."
"Will it still be five yuan?"
Wen Ci shook her head. "Five yuan is a special benefit for the families of the Beijing Military Region. The three-yuan difference is subsidized by the military region. Starting tomorrow, the standard price will be eight yuan per jin."
"Not bad, not bad at all! The fabric of these clothes feels exactly the same as what you’d find in the big department stores, but the prices are worlds apart."
"Isn’t that the truth? It’s still a great deal even at eight yuan per jin."
Seeing Wen Ci completely ignore him, Jiang Chen became exasperated and accused her, "Who gave you permission to go into business? Did you get Mom and Dad’s approval?"
"I’m married. As long as my husband agrees, that’s all that matters."
Seeing that the crowd of onlookers was growing, he realized that making a further scene would only bring shame to the Jiang Family. He grabbed Jiang Ye’s hand and left.
"Who’s that young woman?"
"I don’t know. She looks like Captain Jiang’s girlfriend."
"Then why was that young woman holding onto another man’s arm?"
"I don’t get it."
Gu Che was also pulled away from the main gate by Jiang Ye. Although Gu Che was just a poor kid at the moment, his future was limitless—he was destined to become the richest man in the country.
After buying their clothes, a few middle-aged women returned to the family courtyard, grabbing some sunflower seeds and snacks from their homes before gathering to chat about Wen Ci.
"That Jiang Family girl is so fair-skinned. She looks just like Mrs. Jiang. And she’s really capable, too, following in Mrs. Jiang’s footsteps by going into business.
Just look at her! She hauled all those clothes back from the South. This truck today must have over a thousand pieces, at least. Even if we take an average of five yuan per piece, she must have made at least ten thousand yuan today."
As the Capital, Beijing had plenty of "ten-thousand-yuan households," and the families who could live in the Beijing Military District Family Courtyard all had some connections, more or less.
