Chapter 125: Chapter 125: It’s Not Like There’s a Throne to Inherit

Wen Ci shook her head and met Yu Qing’s eyes, offering her encouragement. "I don’t think it’s just a fantasy. It’s a great idea. Once you get into medical school, you can hone your skills and become a master of your generation."

Yu Qing was so flattered she felt a little embarrassed.

Listening to their conversation, Wen Yaozu was overcome with jealousy.

’When did my sister make other friends?’

He walked to his sister’s side and looked at Yu Qing with a beaming smile. His big, dewy eyes flickered as he asked innocently, "Sister, who is this pretty auntie?"

The moment he said that,

Wen Ci flicked him on the forehead.

’Was he really that innocent, or just pretending?’

’She could tell at a glance. Yu Qing was obviously young and beautiful; Wen Yaozu calling her ’auntie’ was just malicious.’

"And he is?" Yu Qing asked.

"My younger brother, Wen Yaozu."

"Yao... Yaozu?"

Wen Yaozu lifted his chin, smug. "What about it? I’m going to be the one to bring glory to the Wen Family!"

Yu Qing looked at the short, chubby Wen Yaozu and couldn’t stop herself from snickering. "Does your family have a throne to inherit or something? All this talk about bringing glory to your ancestors."

Wen Ci chuckled as well.

In the eighties, it was common for families to value sons over daughters. Even poor families would hide out in the countryside, away from the watchful eyes of the neighborhood committee, just to have a son.

They would even give their daughters names that basically meant "Hoping for a Brother," "Expecting a Brother," or "Here Comes a Brother."

’Wen Ci didn’t get it.’

’It wasn’t as if they had a throne to inherit.’

Wen Yaozu’s face flushed bright red. "You... I...!"

After struggling for a moment to find the words, he turned his gaze to Wen Ci and pouted. "Sister, I’m being bullied. Help me."

"I think she has a point."

Wen Yaozu: "..."

「That evening.」

Xu Jinghe arrived in Beijing, having taken a flight the previous night.

Beijing Airport was in the suburbs. The man held a brick phone, as thick as its namesake, and dialed the Beijing Military Region. "Please connect me to Old Commander Huo’s residence."

Though Xu Jinghe had no military officers in his family,

he did business with the higher-ups and was on a special list in every major military region.

After a moment, Wen Ci’s voice came through the brick phone. "You’re in Beijing already? Do you need me to wait for you at the gate of the military region?"

Xu Jinghe gave a faint smile. "I just got off the plane and am in the suburbs now. I was planning to visit Jingyuan at the hospital first before coming to get Xiao Chuan."

Upon hearing this, Wen Ci explained, "Jingyuan only has visiting hours in the early morning."

"Oh, is that right?" Xu Jinghe lowered his gaze.

’His original plan was to visit Huo Jingyuan, then get Xiao Chuan from the military region, stay at a guesthouse, and fly back first thing in the morning.’

’But...’

"In that case, I’ll stay at a guesthouse and come join you all in the morning."

Wen Ci’s eyes curved into a smile. "Why stay in a guesthouse? You’re Jingyuan’s childhood friend, so you should stay with family. It’ll be a good chance for you to bond with Xiao Chuan."

’The guesthouse is nowhere near as nice as Grandpa’s house.’

’There are two rooms downstairs, one for Wen Yaozu and one for Xiao Chuan.’

’When Xu Jinghe arrives, he can share a room with Xiao Chuan.’

’Xiao Chuan has never met his maternal uncle before, only hearing the word ’uncle’ from his mother. They’ll need some time to bond when they first meet.’

"I wouldn’t want to impose..."

"The guesthouse is near the train station. It’d be such a hassle to travel back and forth."

Xu Jinghe thought about it. It was true; staying at the guesthouse would mean a lot of travel back and forth tomorrow. A gentle smile touched his lips. "Then I’ll be troubling you, Sister-in-law."
