Chapter 121: Chapter 121: Why Did You Slap Me?

But...

Jiang Ye racked her brain for an excuse. She had broken up with Gu Che so abruptly, even humiliating him at the entrance of the military compound.

Jiang Ye couldn’t help but let out a soft sigh.

’Whatever!’

’First, I’ll go back to the Jiang Family and ruin Wen Ci.’

When the two of them returned to the Jiang Family home, Su Guilan and Jiang Zhenjun were in the living room, leisurely eating breakfast. They saw Jiang Chen and Jiang Ye walk in.

They didn’t react much.

Su Guilan said with an indifferent expression, "Why did you decide to come back?"

Jiang Chen walked over to the empty seat beside his mother, sat down, and put on a thoughtful, hesitant expression. "Mom, there’s something I’m not sure if I should tell you."

Jiang Zhenjun, sitting at the head of the table, never involved himself in family matters.

He put down his bowl and chopsticks. "I’m off to work."

Su Guilan asked, "Aren’t you going to eat a little more?"

Once Jiang Zhenjun was gone, Su Guilan looked her son up and down, her gaze flicking to the uneasy Jiang Ye standing nearby. She asked slowly, "What is it?"

"This morning, I was passing the cafeteria when I heard the auntie from next door mention that Wen Ci..." Noticing a shift in his mother’s mood, he quickly corrected himself.

"Ah Ci. I heard the auntie next door mention that Ah Ci gets three people’s worth of food every day. My brother-in-law is in the hospital, so getting food for three... Doesn’t that mean..."

The words had barely left his lips.

SMACK!

The crisp sound echoed through the silent room.

Jiang Ye was stunned for two seconds before she reacted. She rushed to stand behind Jiang Chen and demanded in disbelief, "Mom, why did you hit him!"

Jiang Chen was still in a daze, his face turned to one side. His left cheek burned a fiery red, and his eyes were filled with incomprehension. "Why?"

’Why did she slap me?!’

He’d been the golden boy of the compound his entire life.

In the short week since Wen Ci had been found and brought home, this was the second slap he’d received from his mother. The words rumbled from his throat: "Why did you slap me?"

Su Guilan slammed her chopsticks down on the table, shot up from her seat, and stared down at Jiang Chen. "Ah Ci is your own flesh-and-blood sister!"

"So?"

"Then what were your intentions, coming all the way home just to tell me this? Weren’t you suggesting your sister is secretly keeping a man in the military compound?"

"I wasn’t."

Su Guilan snorted. She’d been around the block enough to see right through such a petty trick. "And so what if it’s food for three people?"

Jiang Ye chimed in, "My brother just meant well."

"What do the Jiang Family’s affairs have to do with an outsider like you?"

In truth, Su Guilan was also suppressing a knot of anger. That morning, when she had gone into Old Commander Huo’s courtyard, she had seen two little kids in the room.

As for the three portions of food, that was because of a chubby kid at home.

She hadn’t asked who the chubby kid was; all she needed to know was that Ah Ci had done nothing wrong.

"I..." Jiang Ye’s eyes welled up, and large teardrops gathered at their corners. "Mom, why are you being so aggressive?"

"You call this aggressive? When you ran off to the Northwest without my permission, did you think about listening to me then?"

"I was wrong..." Jiang Ye sobbed. "I’ll study hard and get into a university. Then I’ll go to Grandpa and Grandma’s graves to pay my respects to them."

Hearing this, Su Guilan’s expression softened considerably.

When she was young, the family elders had doted on Jiang Ye the most. In her teens, they had even hired a highly respected old scholar to be her tutor at home.

Unfortunately, the tutoring didn’t last long due to the political turmoil at the time.

Su Guilan said nonchalantly, "Get into a university first. Then we’ll see."
