Chapter 61: 61-Maybe Not So Innocent

Jaguar:

Never in a million years did I expect to find out about something like that, and to be honest, I had been struggling with it.

I wanted to call Verity and ask her outright what was going on.

Of course, what Gigi had said wasn’t something I could just ignore.

I mean, Gigi wouldn’t keep talking about something unless it was really sketchy.

We all knew Gigi.

The fact that, even after Theodore and I had disappointed her, she was still talking to us and wasn’t using a harsh tone proved just how wrong we had been and how innocent she was.

We had really, really hurt her.

And it’s not like we weren’t aware of it.

I could see that now.

But instead of calling Verity, I dialed Theodore’s number, just in case.

Assumptions were killers in any relationship, and I didn’t want to be someone who heard gossip and came running to accuse Verity of things. freewёbn૦νeɭ.com

I also didn’t want to seem overly critical without knowing the full story.

"Hello," Theodore answered a little dryly, but I could tell he was driving, probably coming back home, if he even thought home was where he should be right now.

I was bitter, annoyed, and angry, and I didn’t know how to take that anger out.

"Where are you?" I asked, trying to keep my composure.

"I’m coming home."

That was all he said before I groaned.

"Yeah, I know. Of course, you’ve been out the whole night," I said to him.

I heard a small protest from him in the form of a groan.

"Well, I’m an adult. It’s not the first time I haven’t been home," he replied sassily, making my face clench.

But then I wondered if that was really the case.

I mean, there was no way, absolutely no way, Verity would settle for someone like Theodore.

Was she not aware of his life?

Did she not know how messy he could be?

More importantly, if she was involved with him, then what the fuck was she doing with me?

Why hadn’t she stopped me immediately? freeweɓnovēl.coɱ

Or was that why she had been trying to pull away from me?

My head was spinning, thoughts forming one after another until I groaned internally.

"Anyway, I’m heading home. We’ll talk then," he replied harshly.

I could sense a little rebellion in his tone.

Once he cut the call, I quickly got ready for the day and headed out to see Ragnar.

As expected, he was sitting in the living room with an unlit cigar in his hand, staring at the screen.

One arm was bent, with his index finger resting against his temple and his thumb against his jawline.

"Did you see it too?" I asked casually as I walked over and sat in a single-seater beside him, turning my attention to the news.

Of course, he had paused on the exact frame where Theodore was carrying Verity.

Although her face wasn’t visible, wasn’t it obvious it was her?

Those were her clothes, her figure, her hair.

Everything pointed to her, especially the anklet she always wore, the one with a little silver heart hanging from the chain.

"Where is Theodore?" Ragnar asked, his voice rough and thunderous.

"I called him," I told him. "He said he’s coming home. However, I’m not sure if I’ll get much out of him again. He sounded very annoyed that I even called."

I made sure to emphasize words like annoyed. I knew exactly what I was doing.

"Are we headed to work?" I asked.

He sighed and leaned back in his chair.

"Let him come over first. We need to deal with this issue," Ragnar responded dryly, getting to his feet.

At that moment, I began to wonder why he was so angry. Was it because it involved one of our employees, or was it because it was Verity herself?

To be honest, I also wanted to know how he would feel if one of us started developing feelings for Verity.

"I was just thinking, what if he hadn’t ditched Gigi because he was irresponsible? What if he had been busy with his girlfriend?"

I didn’t even mention Verity. I only referred to his girlfriend, and I watched Ragnar snap his head toward me as he rose from the couch.

"No," he responded harshly.

I frowned in confusion.

"What do you mean?" I asked, wondering whether he knew that wasn’t the case or if he simply didn’t approve of it.

And he answered just as quickly.

"That cannot happen. I hope you know that."

His words made my body tense.

"What cannot happen?" I whispered, trying to learn more.

"Verity and Theodore," he responded. "I’ve told you before. We can all choose our mates, as long as we all agree that person isn’t going to ruin our home. And Verity? She’s going to wreck us."

His words made my skin tighten.

"I don’t think she’s a threat," I mumbled, avoiding his gaze by focusing on my sleeves.

"Or perhaps you’re forgetting how her presence brings terror to Gigi."

Before I could say anything, Ragnar continued.

"And before you say she’s working in my office, that was Gigi’s decision. She wanted to keep her there so she wouldn’t lose her job because Gigi is worried for her. Gigi did something out of the kindness of her heart. Let’s not make it a habit for her."

He paused briefly before continuing.

"Just because she let her stay in the office doesn’t mean Verity gets to stay in everybody’s life. And just the thought of it disgusts me."

Ragnar finished speaking before finally searching for a lighter to ignite his cigar.

That had not gone as planned.

And just as expected, Theodore arrived.

The minute he entered the living room and saw Ragnar and me sitting there, he could tell he had brought tension and worry upon himself.

"Um, good morning."

Theodore’s voice shuddered a little before he forced a smile onto his lips, acting as though he hadn’t spent the entire night at a hospital taking care of our employee.

"Sit down, Theodore. We have some talking to do," Ragnar muttered.

Theodore visibly gulped before nodding and taking a seat.

This was either going to be very disappointing for me or a huge relief.
