Chapter 53: 53-Playing With Fire

Verity:

My heart was pounding and so was his. freewebnøvel.coɱ

I could feel every beat beneath my cheek.

The hospital appeared almost out of nowhere.

That was when I realized he had not slowed down even once.

The doors slid open.

"Doctor!" he roared, making every head turned toward us.

"She’s having an allergic reaction!"

His voice was loud and loudly commanding.

Chaos erupted the moment people realized the Alpha King had personally brought in a patient.

Someone rushed forward with a wheelchair.

Theodore ignored it completely and carried me straight past them.

"Sir, you can put her down."

The man hurried beside him, pushing the wheelchair.

"No," Theodore hissed.

"But sir—"

The worker stopped the moment Theodore shot him a look.

"Fix her first," Theodore ordered.

I would have laughed if I could breathe properly.

Within seconds, they had me on a bed.

People surrounded me.

Machines started beeping.

Someone placed an oxygen mask over my face.

The last thing I saw before everything blurred was Theodore standing beside the bed, completely drenched from the rain, looking like he was one bad update away from murdering the entire hospital staff.

And in that moment, I got the confirmation I needed.

I was doing a great job.

The next few minutes were a complete blur.

I could hear people talking around me. Some were even asking questions.

Honestly, my throat was burning, and at some point, a nurse pushed a needle into my arm.

I flinched, and she quickly placed a hand on my forehead to calm me down.

Well, I could not complain much. It was my plan, my brilliant plan, that had landed me in the hospital in the first place.

As my eyes drifted around the room, I noticed Theodore was still there.

I spotted him standing beside the bed.

His fists were clenched.

He was completely drenched.

His shirt was messy, practically see-through at this point.

I could tell, and I think everyone else expected it too, that an Alpha King who had delivered a patient would immediately leave to clean himself up, change his clothes, and take care of his expensive appearance.

But Theodore did none of that.

He had not even moved.

At some point, another coughing fit hit me.

The second it did, I watched Theodore reach across the room with that gigantic arm of his and grab the doctor by the collar.

"Why is she still coughing?" he barked.

The doctor looked terrified.

I wanted to tell Theodore to stop, that everything was fine, but talking seemed like a terrible idea.

My throat still felt like it was on fire.

Finally, the medicine started kicking in.

Everything felt heavier. My eyelids, my arms and even the rest of my body.

Every limb felt weighed down.

The last thing I remembered was Theodore standing beside my bed, watching me.

Then darkness took over.

When I opened my eyes again, the room was quiet.

For a second, I did not know where I was.

Then I noticed the hospital ceiling. frёeωebɳovel.com

Right.

The stupid coconut.

My dangerous plan!

Theodore’s crazy panic attack!

My near-death experience!

And fucking wow.

It all came rushing back.

I blinked a few times and turned my head.

Immediately, my eyes landed on him.

I had expected him to be gone.

That had been my biggest concern.

I thought the second I closed my eyes, he would slip away and my plan would fail.

But Theodore was sitting in the chair beside my bed.

Well, attempting to sit.

The chair looked far too small for a man his size.

His head was tilted back against it.

His arms were folded across his chest.

His eyes were closed.

Apparently, he was asleep.

I stared at him for a moment.

Actually, for several moments.

The Alpha King looked ridiculously hot.

The chair practically disappeared beneath his broad frame.

His long legs were stretched out in front of him because there was nowhere else to put them.

Even asleep, he looked unfairly attractive.

His expensive suit was still wrinkled from the rain.

His hair had dried, but it remained slightly messy, a few strands falling over his forehead.

And despite looking uncomfortable as hell, he had apparently refused to leave.

A small wave of satisfaction washed over me.

After all, if an Alpha King was sleeping in a hospital chair because of me, then I must have been doing something right.

I was still a little disoriented when I accidentally parted my lips, ready to call his name and let him know I was awake.

Then I caught myself.

No.

That would be a terrible idea.

My eyes flickered toward the clock hanging on the wall.

It was already very late.

But I still did not want him gone.

The longer Theodore stayed here, the longer he stayed away from her.

The longer it would take for him to apologize.

The longer my plan would keep working.

So I remained completely silent.

I simply watched him.

The Alpha King was still asleep in that chair that looked far too small for him even after hours.

One of his legs was stretched out in front of him while the other was bent slightly, making the expensive fabric of his trousers pull tight over his thighs.

The veins along his forearms were visible beneath his skin.

Honestly, it was unfair how much was gifted to him.

And he used all those charms and power to make other’s lives miserable.

Long enough to realize he must not have moved from that chair for hours.

A small smile tugged at my lips.

Maybe this whole thing had worked even better than I expected.

He stayed for me.

He forgot about Gigi for me.

I know it was too early to celebrate, but it was the beginning.

If I knew Gigi well, she would be kicking rocks by now.

Possibly, curious enough to even dig into his absence.

One thing I knew for a fact, when someone becomes too independent on someone, men like Theodore start to feel suffocated.

Gigi’s behavior would tire him soon.
