Chapter 82: Fooled

"Ruby, where are you?" I questioned, getting scared now; she had been crying for the past three minutes without a word.

What is going on? I’m confused.

"Ruby," I called, walking to my walk-in closet, "I’m coming to you; tell me where you are." I went into my closet, put on a simple outfit, grabbed a bag, and went downstairs.

"Ruby, you have to talk to me. Stop crying and say something. I’m worried," I pleaded.

"I... I..." she started, sniffing.

"What is it?"

"He... Simon..."

"What did Simon do to you? Did he hurt you?" I paused at the bottom of the stairs before asking her.

"Yes... No... I don’t know," she continued crying.

"Then why are you crying? Okay, never mind, don’t tell me anything—just tell me your location."

"I am standing in front of the Montero Hotel," she said after composing herself.

"Okay, you’ll see me soon." I didn’t bother to call my driver, Joshua. He must be in his room; he might even be asleep. I’ll take a taxi and get Ruby—it’ll be faster that way.

After leaving the house, I stood at the roadside and soon found a vacant taxi. I flagged it down, and it stopped.

"Montero Hotel, please."

"Alright," the driver said, and drove off. We arrived fifteen minutes later. freēwēbηovel.c૦m

"Cash or card?" He asked.

"Card, please." I gave him my card, and after deducting my fare, he returned it. I put the card back in my purse and stepped away.

I turned to the entrance of the Montero Hotel and found Ruby squatting in a corner, close to the entrance.

What the hell happened? I was worried, so I quickly rushed to her.

"Ruby," I called, lifting her to her feet. Her eyes were red and swollen.

"You’re here," she muttered, not looking at me.

"What happened to you?" I noticed her ruffled hair and her torn blouse. "Did he hurt you? Did he hit you? Let’s go to the police and report this immediately," I said, but she refused.

"No."

"No?"

"He deserves to go to jail for assaulting you. Why won’t you report him to the cops?" I pressed.

She gulped.

"I want to go home," she muttered.

"Ruby! Tell me the truth, did Simon hurt you?" I demanded.

"He didn’t."

"Then why do you look like a mess? Who tore your dress? Who did this to your hair?"

"I’m too embarrassed to tell you the truth; can we go?"

I sighed. "Alright, I’ll stop a taxi." I walked to the road and flagged one down.

"Let’s go." I helped her into the taxi, and we got in.

"Where to?" The driver asked.

"Maryland Street, the apartment building there," I answered. I was taking Ruby home.

"Okay," the driver said, and drove off.

"No, please take me to the karaoke near my house. I want to go to karaoke," she requested.

"Why would you go to karaoke?" I grumbled. "Shouldn’t you be resting?"

"No, please," she insisted. "I’ll sing and also get drunk."

"Alright, if you insist," I agreed.

We arrived at the karaoke close to her house and stopped. I paid the driver, and he left. "I need beer. Can you buy some from the convenience store there?"

"Sure, wait here." I crossed the street and entered the convenience store.

How many cans of beer should I buy? I’m confused. She wants to get drunk; maybe I should buy six—one for myself and five for her.

Okay, that’s exactly what I’ll do. After picking out the beer, I paid and left the store. We entered the karaoke, and she picked up a mic to sing.

I sat behind her and watched as she sang into the microphone while shedding tears.

After singing the first heartbreak song, she went to the second and the third; when she became exhausted, she dropped the microphone and sat next to me.

She picked up a beer, opened it, and finished it within seconds; then she picked up the second beer and drank half of it.

"Will you speak to me now? I think it’s time," I asked as I opened my beer.

She sniffed. "Yes, it’s time I revealed the truth to you."

"What happened to you?" I turned towards her and took a sip from my cold beer.

"I told you about the hotel stuff," she started.

"Yes."

"After I agreed to go to the hotel with him, he got excited and requested that we leave immediately. I didn’t suspect anything and left with him. The hotel was close to the restaurant, so we got there within eight minutes. He booked a room, and we were about to enter when the atmosphere suddenly changed."

"Before I knew it, I saw a camera in my face, and I was attacked from behind. A woman dragged me and Simon from the back. I was perplexed. I didn’t know what was happening."

"Who was this woman?" I asked, interested in the story.

"She was his fiancée."

"What??"

"He had a fiancée; I wasn’t aware, and I fell for his tricks." She brought her hand to her cheeks and wiped away the tears that were beginning to escape her eyes.

Moon goddess!

"The woman alleged that he had been cheating on her for a long time and had especially followed him around today because she needed to get evidence of his cheating."

"So she called the paparazzi, and they flooded us; they took so many pictures of us, and the woman also pulled my hair."

"She concluded that I was the woman he had been cheating with. She called me all sorts of names and told me she was going to make the pictures go viral."

"She called me a mannerless whore and didn’t even try to listen to me. She completely embarrassed me in front of the other customers."

She paused and sniffed. "Some of the customers came out with their phones and also took videos of us. I haven’t experienced this level of humiliation my entire life."

She sniffed again. "How was I to know that he had a fiancée? I wouldn’t have agreed to this date if I knew who he was. I was played," she burst out, starting to cry again.

I leaned closer and began to pat her back. "What did Simon do while his fiancée did all this to you?"

"He did nothing; he was trying to save himself from being captured by the paparazzi."

"He didn’t even apologize to you or explain?"

"No, he... He... He left without a word, he didn’t apologize, and he fooled me. He embarrassed me." Her body began to shake as she bawled. I moved closer and tried my best to console her.
