Chapter 55: The gym

I cried a lot after reaching the house yesterday. Parker promised he would get Cole to a better hospital, and Cole could return home once he got better.

This means I won’t be able to speak to or see him ever again. I hope he doesn’t hate me too much. I had no choice. I hope he understands me. Calling him an orphan was too cruel of me.

After crying for a long while, I fell asleep and woke up past midnight. I started reading by 2:00 a.m., and I’ve just finished. It’s past 6:00 a.m.

I am sleepy and worn out. I don’t have classes today, and I don’t have the energy for extracurricular activities.

I just want to eat, sleep, and maybe read again.

Exams start in two weeks. I missed so many classes; I have a lot of reading to do.

"Are you still reading?" A knock came at the door, followed by a push; Nanny Samantha poked her head in.

"No, I just finished," I answered.

She smiled and walked in.

"How was it? Were you able to finish a page?"

A page? She’s funny.

"What do you mean by a page?"

"You must have read countless pages, I guess," she smiled.

"You’re better than my daughters; they hate reading, especially the younger ones."

"How old are they?"

"One was 14 and the other was 12."

"Huh, they’re young. I didn’t know your daughters were so young," I exclaimed.

"Yes, they were," she smiled.

Were? Why does she keep using the past tense? I don’t understand.

"They used to complain and tell me how much they disliked reading; they preferred watching cartoons." She smiled, and I chuckled.

"Although the older children were somewhat more agreeable, it required significant effort to persuade them to read."

"Oh."

"Breakfast by 7:00 a.m.; you should brush your teeth and wash your face," she suggested.

"Yes, I should do that." I forced myself out of bed and walked to the bathroom. I brushed my teeth and washed my face before returning to the room.

I found Nanny Samantha waiting.

"Uh, Samantha, why do you keep using ’had’ and ’were’ to describe your children? I’m a little curious," I said; the question had been on my mind.

"Oh, that?" She laughed.

"Yes. Are your children okay?"

"My children are fine. The oldest ones are probably living well, but the youngest are no more."

No more? They died?

"What happened to them?" I moved closer and asked.

She exhaled.

"One was raped and died at the hospital; the other got pregnant by her boyfriend. He was still a child like her, but older; anyway, he got her pregnant, and she died while giving birth. The baby survived, though."

"What?!" Moon goddess! I slapped my hand over my mouth to stop a scream from escaping.

"What about the older ones?"

"My oldest? They hate me now; they blame me and also hate themselves for not being able to protect the younger ones. They’re around your age," she smiled.

"Oh my gosh! I had no idea; I am so sorry."

"No, you shouldn’t be. My grandson is still alive, although he is in the hospital, and he is doing fine. I’ll do everything to ensure that he lives on. I wasn’t able to save my little girls, but I should be able to save my grandchild."

"Why is he at the hospital? Is he sick?"

"Yes, he has heart issues; he needs a heart transplant, but we haven’t found a donor yet; we’re still waiting."

Oh my gosh! This is even more heartbreaking news.

"I am so sorry, Nanny Samantha. I pray you find a donor soon."

"The doctors are trying their best; they contact me frequently to update me on his health, and I visit him often."

"Oh, look, it’s already 7:00 a.m.; you should head down to the dining room immediately," she urged.

"Oh, right, I’m leaving; you should also have breakfast."

"I will."

I grabbed my phone and walked out of the room. I went downstairs and headed straight to the dining room. I saw one, two, three, and four heads.

Bryce is back. He is working on his tablet. Gavin and Parker are on their phones. Cooper is having his morning coffee.

Cooper is the first to notice me.

"You’re early," he called. "Have your seat." Cooper pulled out the chair beside him.

"Yeah, good morning," I greeted.

"Good morning?" Gavin scoffed. "When did you start being respectful?" He smirked.

"She was reborn yesterday; she’s a new person now," Parker mumbled.

I went to the seat Cooper provided and sat down.

"Are you okay? I heard what happened; Parker told us. Did you cry a lot?" Cooper looked at me.

What? What did Parker tell them? Curious, I shifted my gaze to Parker. When he noticed I was staring at him, he shifted his gaze to me.

Don’t tell me... He told them.

Did he tell them about Cole? My goodness! After promising not to tell the others, he went ahead and told them everything.

I can’t believe this. Why did I even trust him? I’m so stupid. I’m a fool.

"What?" Parker silently mouthed while staring at me.

"Nothing," I frowned, looking away.

"So you tricked Bryce into taking you to Cole only to end up getting hurt?" Cooper asked, shaking his head.

"It’s unbelievable. She’s not a saint; she played us," Gavin murmured.

"A saint, my foot. She’s tricky; you seem to have forgotten who she is." Parker rolled his eyes.

Oh Parker... If I could, I would kill him and bury him ten feet under. Why can’t he keep his word?

"Your little boyfriend is free now; you’re happy, aren’t you?" Cooper leaned closer, but I stayed quiet.

"Are we still going out tomorrow? Are you less busy?" He asked.

I don’t know. I’m not so sure I want to go on this date. It would be better to stay at home, wouldn’t it?

"What date?" Bryce spoke up; he lowered his tablet and looked at Cooper.

"We are supposed to go out tomorrow. Why? Do you need her?"

"Yeah," Bryce responded.

"At what time?"

"The whole day."

"The whole day??" Cooper exclaimed. "What do you plan to do with her?"

"Training, what else?"

"Oh," Cooper said.

"I’m free tomorrow. I’m also less busy today," he revealed.

"Oh," Cooper said again, then looked at me.

"It seems we’ll have to cancel our date, or maybe we can move it up. What do you think?" ƒrēewebnovel.com

What do I think? I feel happy and sad at the same time. Happy that I won’t go on a date, sad about the training.

Can’t I have a day to myself?

Must my day include any of them? Gosh.

"Amera, meet me at the gym after breakfast," Bryce said to me. "I’ll ring the bell now," he announced.
