Chapter 118: We’re mated to her

"I also thought it was ridiculous at first," Cooper chimed in. "I didn’t believe the general at first either, but his words turned out to be true. We’re mated to her, Mom. It’s the truth, Mom," he said.

"No, I’m sure that man did something. Five of his sons cannot be mated to the same woman for no reason. There must be a reason. This has never happened before. He might be manipulating you or something; I don’t believe that this is real," Celine argued.

"We already checked, and we aren’t being manipulated; we’re not babies, Mom. Just accept it; we’ve long accepted it. You have to accept it," Cooper said again.

"No, I refuse to accept it. Why must it be her? What if they’re in this together? What if your father—" she began, but Bryce didn’t allow her to finish.

"Drop whatever suspicions you have of her. She’s also clueless about all this. She’s innocent," he said.

"Are you sure? How certain are you? Or are you just trying to defend her? I expected you to be the smartest of the bunch," she snapped.

"Well, I’m sorry that I couldn’t meet your expectations," Bryce fired back.

"What?" Celine huffed. "I’m only looking out for you. Why are you trying to pick a fight with me?"

"You’re not looking out for me; you’ve never done that," Bryce said.

"What?" Celine huffed again. "Have you forgotten who I am? I am your mother; it is my duty to look after you," she half-yelled.

"A mother? Do you deserve to call yourself my mother? You may be Cooper’s mother, but do not for one moment think of yourself as my mother; I do not consider you to be my mother either," Bryce gritted out.

"What did you just say?" I saw Celine rise to her feet.

"We’re done here. I want you to leave my office and go back to whatever hole you came from; do not reappear before me again," Bryce groaned. freēwēbnovel.com

Why is he being so rude to her? He shouldn’t; she is his mother.

Celine drew closer to him. "Are you being this rude to me because of that skinny little girl? Huh?"

Cooper rose up and held her. "It’s okay, I brought you here because you said you missed him. We’re not kids; we shouldn’t be fighting," he said.

"Did you hear what he said to me? He spoke to me very rudely. Do I deserve to be insulted? It’s been years since I last saw him, and I came here because I missed him. I can’t believe this," she hissed.

"I know, I know how you feel, but we won’t solve anything by yelling at each other. Let’s return to the hospital, okay?" He tried to lead her out, but she prevented him.

"But what about the girl? Your mate, I want to meet her before I leave. I need to do something about her before—"

"Don’t meet her," Bryce interrupted. "You don’t deserve to meet her after insulting her. I won’t allow it; kindly be on your way," he said.

"What??"

"Bryce! Stop it. Mom also has a right to meet her. She’s our mate, have you forgotten?" Cooper queried.

Bryce didn’t respond to Cooper and Celine; instead, he sat behind his desk and began to work.

"Let him be, let’s go," Celine said as she approached the door.

Shit, they’re coming out. Where should I hide? There’s no hiding place here. They can’t know that I’m here. They can’t know that I listened to their conversation.

Shit. Shit.

I turned and rushed to the elevator. I stood in front of the elevator just as Celine stepped out of the office.

"Princess," Cooper called when he saw me.

Huh, my eyes widened as I stared at him.

"What are you—?" He began to ask, but his mom interrupted.

She drew closer to me. "How long have you been here? Have you been listening to our conversation?" She interrogated.

Dammit! How did she realize this? Is she super smart, or does she have trust issues? If not, does she hate me? Why, though? We don’t even know each other. Why has she been on my neck? Why does she keep targeting me?

"No... No, ma’am," I responded.

"It’s a lie; you’ve been here for a while. I didn’t hear the elevator closing. Or are you trying to say that I’m dumb?" She groaned.

"Mom, mom. Why are you acting out of character? Stop it." Cooper stood between us.

"I need to speak to her, Cooper; leave us," Celine demanded.

"Mom, are you sure? I don’t want her to get hurt. I think I should stay and listen to what you have to say to her," he suggested.

"No," a voice declined from behind.

We turned at the same time and saw him.

Bryce.

He walked to us, held my arm, and said, "I already declined your request; please be on your way. Goodbye." He turned and led me into his office.

He locked the door afterward before dragging me to the resting area.

"What are you doing here? You should have walked away when you saw us having a conversation. Why did you stay? Why did you listen to our conversation? When will you drop this habit of eavesdropping on people? Huh?!" He snapped.

"I..." I opened my mouth to speak but couldn’t utter a word. I didn’t have an excuse to give, so I snapped my mouth shut again.

"What did you gain by listening to us? If you had left earlier, you wouldn’t have run into her. Why the heck did you come here?" He growled.

I lowered my head and closed my eyes.

He is mad. It’s obvious. I wasn’t aware he knew I was here, and I would have left, but they were talking about me.

I was curious. I wanted to hear her opinion of me. I’m at fault, I know it, but he shouldn’t be too mad. I’m sure he would do the same in my shoes.

Tears gathered in my eyes and dropped onto my cheeks.

I took my thumb and wiped them off, but they continued to fall. Desperate to hold them back, I fisted my hands and bit my lower lip, but my attempt to stop the tears only caused them to pour out like rainfall, and before I knew it, I was bawling.
