Chapter 26: Chapter 26: Arranged Tasks
Unlike the usual members of the Investigation Corps, Yun Shu was dressed in business attire.
Sometimes, Bai Wu would look at the way some comparatively wealthy people dressed in the lower levels and feel as if this was not another world but rather his own world, seven hundred years later.
In the interrogation room the day before, Yun Shu and Xue Ci had become Bai Wu’s ardent fans.
Yun Shu looked around Bai Wu’s room and found that although it was simple, everything was neatly arranged. The most conspicuous item was a rice cooker.
That was considered quite a rare item.
"Let’s get to the point."
"Well... the captain sent us to find you because he was afraid you’d get too idle and wanted to assign you some work. And then, coincidentally, our team leader thinks you’re very capable, so..."
Yun Shu felt somewhat embarrassed, but those were Wu Jiu’s words verbatim.
Bai Wu raised an eyebrow.
Just yesterday, Wu Jiu had said to give him a seven-day leave, and today, he was arranging for him to help the interrogation team with their work.
He mulled it over and guessed what Wu Jiu meant.
The interrogation team was, after all, relatively safe inside the second level of the Investigation Corps. When Bai Wu came back yesterday, he felt that he was being watched.
He quickly spotted the target, but the memo he received indicated that the person was from an organization called "Little Dwarf’s Old Flame".
He suspected that it must be the captain who had sent someone to protect him.
So it seemed the gambling house people had started to make their move?
Bai Wu nodded:
"Let’s go, take me to the interrogation team. I happen to have nothing to do for the next two days anyway."
Yun Shu grew even more embarrassed, her head bowed as she said:
"Well... the thing is, we have a backlog of cases here... and the captain suggests it would be best if you were to take charge of all of them. There’s a lot of work, and seven days won’t be enough."
Bai Wu was stunned again. Had the captain anticipated that I’d want to leave the High Tower on my own? Quite clever, he quickly nodded and said:
"Hmm, I understand, let’s go take a look first."
...
...
On the second level of High Tower, Investigation Corps division, Team Seven’s camp interrogation group.
Looking at the half-human-high pile of files, Bai Wu said:
"Is there no computer in this place?"
"Those things are found on the third floor."
It wasn’t just Yun Shu and Xue Ci, but the head of the interrogation team too had come.
Bai Wu nodded.
The advent of computers was on par with the technology of his own era.
This suggested that the technological level of the third floor was roughly equivalent to his previous life. By that measure, the fourth floor’s technology would be even higher? The fifth floor might have a strong futuristic feel? And the sixth floor... inexplicably reminded him of the Protoss from StarCraft.
Bai Wu then looked around and asked:
"Is all the documentation here?"
"Yes... all the unresolved cases from the past year are stacked here."
The head of the interrogation team was actually very young, 29 years old, named Tian Xun, not much older than Xue Ci and Yun Shu.
The notes about this person were rather odd.
[An extreme perfectionist who does not care about results, but only enjoys the process, especially when dealing with women.]
Bai Wu had not yet figured out the meaning of this remark, but he had remembered this person.
After all, they would be dealing with each other frequently in the future.
"Talk about the overall commonalities of these cases."
"Overall?"
Tian Xun felt something strange; cases varied, and it wasn’t as if this was a serial killing...
Shouldn’t each case be inquired about individually?
Yet, these cases did share common points:
"These cases, in fact, mostly had identified crime suspects, but the methods of the crimes, the motives, and the whereabouts of the evidence were all still unclear... You know, in the lower levels, often the local people won’t cooperate with you, and you really have no way to gather evidence."
Bai Wu was slightly surprised, as this would indeed save him a lot of work, but he was very curious about something:
"So, you mean to say that with so many cases piled up, each and every one has been investigated? And all are at the stage of gathering evidence?"
Was the interrogation team that diligent? He suddenly understood what the remark "the ultimate perfectionist who focuses on the process" meant.
But Tian Xun shook his head and said:
"We are indeed following up on every case. You need to know that there are cases everyday in the lower levels, sixteen squads, and each squad’s interrogation team is incredibly busy. In fact, there are some cases we really do not want to handle, but who asked for us to end up with such a leader?"
"Laoda? I mean, the captain?"
"Yes, the captain cares a lot about these issues. The order in the lower levels is chaotic, but the more it is so, the more the captain hopes we can do something, to let the people in the lower levels understand that they haven’t been abandoned, that they aren’t just living as labor tools." Tian Xun said this quite placidly.
Including Xue Ci and Yun Shu, none reacted; after all, after years of working together, they had become accustomed to an excellent leader.
But Bai Wu was surprised.
In his previous life, he had encountered those willing to plead for the people, with many police officers taking justice as their creed.
But this life was different; this was the end of the world.
It was difficult to imagine the lower levels, filled with fraud and violence, where the people lived off the illusory life brought by live streaming... that there would be someone trying to change it. freeωebnovēl.c૦m
It looked like Wu Jiu wasn’t that Little Dwarf after all.
"Regarding these cases, does your interrogation team have the power to make temporary arrests of the most suspect individuals?"
"We do, and although our status isn’t as high as the Garrison Corps of High Tower, the higher-ups have given us considerable power of authority. At least when dealing with the commoners of the lower levels, we can arrest directly, and we have seven days to gather evidence. Even if we catch the wrong person, releasing them after seven days, the higher-ups won’t question it."
Bai Wu shook his head slightly.
This isn’t because the higher-ups trust your Investigation Corps; it’s because the people above... are contemptuous of the human rights of the commoners of the lower levels.
What Wu Jiu wants to change is very difficult.
"Then bring all the suspects involved in all the cases here. If there aren’t enough people in the interrogation team, call up members from other teams."
Tian Xun, Xue Ci, and Yun Shu thought they had heard wrong:
"What are you saying... all of them?"
"Is there a problem?"
"This... involves over a hundred people; can you handle them all?"
If he had to go through the same processes as his previous life, investigating, gathering evidence, exploring, interrogating, judging, closing the case, those steps would be too troublesome, and seven days would not be enough.
But with Prayle’s Eye, there was absolutely no need.
In his previous life, solving a case was like falling in love, especially with cold cases, the process was like: first love, secret love, confession, arguments, breakup, getting back together, arguments, breakup. The journey to reach home plate was twisted and complicated,
But in this life, solving a case would be more like: "Hello, sir, I am Technician Number 8, pleased to serve you."
"When I was outside the tower, neither the captain nor that brat, Lin Wurou, would question my words."
The trio from Tian Xun remained stunned once again; they had dealt with Lin Wurou who was extremely sarcastic and very unfriendly to newcomers...
If even he could be handled, then indeed there was no reason to doubt Bai Wu.
It’s just that he was very curious, what exactly was Bai Wu going to do? The kid hadn’t even flipped through the files yet...
"Just do as I said, quickly."
"Got it!"
The three members of the interrogation group hurriedly left to start contacting other team members to arrest the suspects.
Bai Wu was now sitting at the table, beginning to flip through those files.
Wu Jiu thought that with so many cases, Bai Wu couldn’t possibly solve them within seven days, but what Bai Wu was worried about was not failing to solve them, but how to explain if he solved them too quickly.
Four hours later, dozens of criminals from the lower levels filled the interrogation room.
