Chapter 312: Chapter 310: Gothic Mental Hospital
Darkness surrounded her. The sky above was devoid of sun, moon, or stars.
It was utterly silent.
Wen Ying kicked at the ground. A small stone flew out, making a faint sound.
She closed her eyes. By the time she opened them again, Wen Ying had already adjusted to the darkness.
"Kong Jian, where are you?"
Wen Ying called out Kong Jian’s name tentatively, but besides her own voice, there was no other sound.
The echo of her voice seemed to tell Wen Ying...
...that she had arrived in a strange, somewhat bizarre place.
’Has the space between people been cut off?’
’Don’t tell me Kong Jian and I are no longer in the same dimension?’
There was nothing around her but darkness. No buildings, no plants or flowers, no sounds.
Wen Ying took out her phone. Even though she could see now, she still preferred a bit more light.
She turned on her phone’s flashlight, and the current space was laid bare before her.
Darkness. Spreading darkness.
A darkness that seemed bottomless.
"So this is the Mist?" Wen Ying muttered under her breath.
[Congratulations, Host, for successfully getting trapped by the Mist!]
[Apologies, system error. Rolling back and trying again.]
[Congratulations, Host, for successfully making contact with the Mist. Initiating the Mist World main questline!]
[As the Host’s dearest System, I share in your joys and sorrows, your glory and your ruin! Therefore, after detecting the Host’s heart rate, this System has specially designed a simple mission for you: live stream from within the Mist.]
[Make everyone aware that the Mist is about to descend and that danger can strike at any moment.]
"What about Kong Jian?"
[Rest assured, Host. Kong Jian will be safe while you are live streaming.]
"..."
"I think I’ll explore the Mist first. It looks like there’s nothing here... The system isn’t doing this on purpose, is it?"
[Rest assured, Host. What is meant to appear will appear.]
"In all the time you were gone, all the time you’ve been missing... did you go study philosophy or something?"
[...]
Wen Ying paid the system no mind. She was in a completely different dimension; she couldn’t possibly do nothing but listen to the system and start a live stream. Wouldn’t that just be letting it lead her by the nose?
The system said no more.
After choosing a direction, Wen Ying began to walk forward.
Along the way, there was only darkness. Nothing but darkness and, of course, Wen Ying.
But not a single other living organism appeared.
She walked on like this for a long, long time—about an hour.
Suddenly, Wen Ying saw an ancient castle standing not far ahead.
It was an old, European-style castle, and in this environment, it looked rather sinister.
The high walls of the castle were densely covered in tangled, dark green vegetation.
Her surroundings were still silent. Not a single glimmer of light escaped from the castle in the dark.
’I wonder if there’s anything inside that castle.’
CAW! CAW CAW! CAW!
The sound reached her ears, and Wen Ying looked up just in time to see a black shadow fly past and land on one of the castle’s beams.
Its gaze, a flash of crimson, was fixed in Wen Ying’s direction.
’A crow?’
Wen Ying watched the crow that had suddenly appeared. This had to be the first animal she had encountered in this dimension.
’It feels kind of familiar, actually.’
Wen Ying had almost believed she was the only living thing in this entire dimension. If there was a crow, then there must be other animals, right?
’And if there are animals, maybe there are people, too.’
After staring at the crow for a moment and seeing it do nothing but stare back, Wen Ying walked toward the castle.
The castle’s main gate was towering. The iron door, which looked like it had been through a lot, was covered in dense markings.
Scratches and bite marks.
To one side of the gate, Wen Ying reached out and pulled away a section of vines.
It revealed several large words: Gothic Mental Hospital
’This is a mental hospital?’
’Who in their right mind would build a mental hospital in an old castle?’
Besides, this place looked completely deserted, with no signs of human life.
The main face of the gate was a single, solid surface. There were no locks and no place to push; it was like a seamless part of the wall.
In short, an ordinary person would look at it and have absolutely no idea how to open it.
Wen Ying thought so, too.
BEEP! A sudden sound made Wen Ying look back toward the words "Gothic Mental Hospital."
Just below the name, a touch-sensitive screen of light had suddenly appeared.
Wen Ying reached out and poked it. The screen displayed: Answer Incorrect.
She tried several more times with the same result.
Wen Ying understood. ’Oh, it’s a password-protected door!’
’What on earth is this place? And why is it so high-tech?!’
