Chapter 311: Chapter 309: More People Arrive
"Before Sister Wen Ying came here, she was always in her hometown. She has no experience running a company. I remember asking her, and she said she opened a clinic—just enough to support herself, no one else to worry about..."
Xu Jiali remembered Wen Ying’s expression at the time. She hadn’t been lying.
Song Jiayan felt a pang of frustration. He had thought this was an opportunity for Xu Jiali. ’Was it all for nothing, then?’
"Anyway, enough about me. That Chen Ming guy didn’t seem like a fraud. He must be a friend of Sister Wen Ying’s. Soon you’ll be a big, famous singer!"
"Oh, right. See if you have any service. The rescue team should be on their way by now, right?"
Song Jiayan pulled out his phone. The result was both unexpected and entirely predictable.
His phone had no signal again. It was, one had to admit, suspiciously convenient.
When they had an emergency, the signal had returned.
And when they were just lazing around, the signal vanished again?
Song Jiayan looked at the red string on his wrist. "Jiali, has my red string gotten a little dimmer?"
Song Jiayan rubbed his eyes and looked again.
It was definitely a bit dimmer.
A nascent idea took shape in his mind.
"It looks like it. You don’t think it was from before?"
Song Jiayan nodded.
’Is this bracelet really that powerful?’
’It doesn’t just save your life—it can even bring you good luck at critical moments?’
After ten minutes of silence, Xu Jiali spoke. "Song Jiayan, you’re curious too, aren’t you?"
Song Jiayan nodded silently.
"We can’t tell anyone about this without Sister Wen Ying’s permission!"
"Okay."
After another two minutes of silence, she said, "I just remembered some things I read online about Sister Wen Ying. They were kind of buried, mixed in with the trending topics on Weibo. I think someone said a talisman she drew saved their life. And someone else said a prize she gave away caused their parents to dream about relatives who had already passed away. The dreams were supposedly incredibly vivid, and based on what the relatives said in the dream, they found a family heirloom! There were a ton of stories like that, but most people didn’t believe them.
Song Jiayan, do you believe it?"
"I... do." His worldview had already been completely overturned from his time with Wen Ying and Little White.
"I believe it too! Honestly, I didn’t use to, but now that I’ve experienced it myself, I’m realizing it might all be true! I’m even starting to think it has nothing to do with Little White."
Xu Jiali started laughing as she spoke.
"Jiali, is Little White really the Fox Immortal? Because besides his fighting skills and being able to talk..."
Song Jiayan didn’t continue, but Xu Jiali knew what he meant.
"Little White is the Fox Immortal, but he seems a bit different from the legends. I remember in those old supernatural stories, the Great Immortals were powerful enough to move rivers and seas. But Little White is more like a fox kid."
Hearing this, Song Jiayan immediately nodded. He thought so too.
Little White’s temperament was no different from a child’s.
He was just much more powerful than a child.
"So I have a theory. Could Little White be like one of those characters in novels, sealed away for hundreds of years? And he was only unsealed after meeting Sister Wen Ying. So, based on his actual lived age, he really is a child. But he’s still the Fox Immortal, so he’s still incredibly powerful."
Song Jiayan pondered this possibility. The more he thought about it, the more reasonable it seemed.
"Jiali, I think you should write novels. You have a great imagination; you could definitely create a really interesting fictional world," Song Jiayan said with a serious expression.
Xu Jiali burst out laughing. "I can read novels, sure, but writing them? Forget it. That stuff burns way too many brain cells. Your hair falls out by the handful. I don’t want to go bald in my prime."
Suddenly, Xu Jiali felt like teasing Song Jiayan. "You’re an original songwriter; you have a good grasp of words. So if I were to write a novel, what kind of pen name would you give me?"
"Hidden Deep, Buried Shallow."
Xu Jiali roared with laughter. "Ha! I can’t believe you actually had one ready. Too bad writing novels isn’t a job for normal people. Someone like me writing a novel would probably be a total flop. I wonder if someone will use that pen name in the future, and if they’ll be a flop too. I hope she can avoid flopping for at least a couple of years."
Seeing that Xu Jiali truly had no intention of writing a novel, Song Jiayan didn’t bring up the topic again.
「Two hours later.」
The two, still sitting in the pit, were successfully rescued.
Finding them wasn’t actually difficult. When the two sent their messages, Weibo had automatically added their location.
Xu Jiali and Song Jiayan looked guiltily at their rescuers. "Sorry for all the trouble we’ve caused."
Despite their apologetic attitude, they still had a lecture coming.
And so, on the way back, the two of them received a thorough lecture on safety.
"We know you’re worried about Doctor Wen, but this isn’t something just anyone can get involved in. You’ve been with her for this long, so you must know she’s no ordinary person, right?" They didn’t say anything more.
After all, some things couldn’t be said right now.
"We’re sorry, Officer. We know we were wrong. When we get back, we’ll wait quietly in town for Sister Ying. We absolutely won’t cause any more trouble."
As for what they encountered in the forest, Xu Jiali and Song Jiayan said nothing.
But to their surprise, just as they reached the other bank and entered the town...
Just when they’d been told they were free to go and rest, another group of officers appeared before them.
After a few muttered words were exchanged, they were led away by these officers who had appeared out of nowhere.
Xu Jiali shot a resentful look at the officer who’d just told them they were free to go.
The man lowered his head in embarrassment, pretending to look for something.
In a secluded corner, the newcomer was much more serious than the previous officers. His gaze was piercing. "Ms. Xu Jiali, Mr. Song Jiayan, I am XXXXXXX. I’ve already reviewed your files. I’ve asked you both here for a few words. Did you two encounter anything in the forest?"
Xu Jiali shook her head. Song Jiayan remained silent.
"Doctor Wen’s methods are hardly ordinary; you should be well aware of that. It’s only natural that you’ve seen a few things while with her. But you need to understand that your answers now are critical. The lives of several hundred people in this town could be at stake."
Xu Jiali looked at the man. "Sir, what do you mean by that?"
"You dared to go looking for Doctor Wen. It wasn’t just based on reckless bravery, was it?"
The man’s gaze suddenly swept to the Red Rope Bracelets on their wrists.
"These two bracelets look the same, so why is one so badly faded? These are the bracelets Doctor Wen gave you during the show, aren’t they?"
Song Jiayan looked at Xu Jiali, not knowing how to answer.
"Yes, these are the bracelets Sister Wen Ying gave us. They’re a symbol of our friendship."
The man was silent for a few minutes. "If you tell the truth, perhaps I can tell you where Doctor Wen has gone."
Hearing this, Xu Jiali instantly grew tense.
The man was in no hurry. He waited for Xu Jiali and Song Jiayan’s reply.
"Sir, I’d like to ask you a question. I hope I can get an honest answer."
