Chapter 74: Chapter 74: A Devil-like Existence

It was a little after seven that evening when Sophie Shaw received a WeChat message from Joseph Shaw, informing her that Mr. Kane had passed away from a heart attack.

She had just gotten home and was in the kitchen, helping Alaric Blackwood.

The man took an abundance of ingredients from the refrigerator, letting her watch as he washed and prepped them. Though he said he wanted her help, he wasn’t actually letting her do anything.

She was merely sitting at the kitchen island, admiring this effortlessly capable man before her, who exuded an aura of mature charm.

The vibration of the phone in her pocket briefly broke her concentration.

She pulled out her phone and saw the message from Joseph Shaw: "Mr. Kane is suspected to have had a heart attack. The body was already cold when he was found. Come back first thing tomorrow morning."

Sophie Shaw covered her mouth in shock.

Noticing the stunned look on her face, Alaric Blackwood asked, "What’s wrong?"

"Mr. Kane is dead. Heart attack."

At her words, Alaric Blackwood, who was deveining shrimp with a pair of scissors, flinched. The sharp inner blade of the scissors sliced through his glove and cut open the pad of his index finger.

Blood immediately gushed out.

Seeing this, Sophie Shaw quickly snatched the scissors from his hand, peeled off his glove, and rinsed the wound with clean water. Then she pulled him into the living room, grabbed the first-aid kit, and treated and bandaged his finger.

Throughout the entire process, Alaric Blackwood’s expression was grim, his thoughts clearly elsewhere.

Sensing something was off, Sophie Shaw waved a hand in front of his eyes, successfully pulling his awareness back to the present.

"Mr. Blackwood, why are you so panicked about Mr. Kane dying from a heart attack?"

The corner of Alaric Blackwood’s mouth lifted slightly. "I’m panicked?"

Sophie Shaw said nothing, her gaze falling to his gauze-wrapped index finger.

The cut was very deep. The bleeding wouldn’t stop, and it had taken nearly two minutes of applying pressure just to stanch it. It was clear how distracted he had been at that moment.

"Mr. Blackwood, are you hiding something from me?"

Things having come to this, Alaric Blackwood could no longer hide it.

That morning, he had sent Mr. Kane a copy of the video showing Damian Morgan cheating with Yara Valentine. His only intention was to make Mr. Kane see Damian’s true colors; he never expected Mr. Kane would have a fatal heart attack.

He was wondering if the video he sent had been the trigger that caused Mr. Kane’s heart attack.

After hearing him out, Sophie Shaw subconsciously assumed that Alaric Blackwood had sent the video to Mr. Kane because he didn’t want Vianne Kane to be deceived by Damian Morgan any longer.

’He’s in love with Vianne Kane. He wants to save the future of his childhood friend...’

「The next morning.」

Dressed in a black shirt and black pants, Sophie Shaw accompanied Alaric Blackwood to the Kane family residence.

The moment she stepped inside, she heard the sound of sobbing.

It was Bianca Kane crying.

The woman was sitting on the sofa, a handkerchief in her hand. Her head rested on Joseph Shaw’s shoulder as she dabbed at her tears and asked through her sobs, "Have you heard anything from the police?"

Joseph Shaw patted her shoulder and said softly, "The autopsy report is back. Dad died of a heart attack."

The person who discovered Mr. Kane’s body was the family’s old butler. When Mr. Kane didn’t appear for lunch as usual, the butler went to look for him.

He first checked Mr. Kane’s room but didn’t find him, so he then went to the tearoom.

The butler was the first to find the body.

At the time, the tearoom door was closed. Mr. Kane was lying face down on the floor between the coffee table and the sofa. A few pills were scattered on the ground, and not far away was a bottle of heart medication.

The scene looked for all the world like Mr. Kane had suffered a sudden heart attack. He had tried to take his medicine but had fallen off the sofa, causing the bottle to roll onto the floor.

Unable to reach the bottle, he had tried to call for help on his phone but didn’t make it in time.

Upon seeing the body, the butler immediately recalled informing Damian Morgan that Mr. Kane wanted to see him, and the image of Damian walking into the tearoom flashed in his mind, making his heart fill with suspicion.

Therefore, the butler didn’t touch anything, instead securing the scene and immediately reporting the news to Bianca Kane.

Bianca Kane found it suspicious, so she called the police and consented to an autopsy.

But unexpectedly, the result was that Mr. Kane really had died of a heart attack...

"It was so sudden."

Bianca Kane couldn’t accept the terrible news.

When Mr. Kane was discharged from the hospital, the doctor had said that as long as he rested and had his condition monitored regularly, he could live for at least another ten years. How could he have passed away so suddenly?

"Mom, calm down."

Damian Morgan gently patted Bianca Kane’s shoulder, trying to comfort her.

His action, however, undoubtedly provoked Bianca Kane.

The woman looked up at him, her gaze darkening. Then, as if she had suddenly gone mad, she shot up and lunged at him, her hands clamping tightly around his neck.

"Was it you? Did you do this?"

Her voice was shrill as she roared at Damian Morgan. freeweɓnovēl.coɱ

Spittle sprayed all over Damian Morgan’s face.

Despite his neck being forcefully choked, Damian Morgan didn’t resist in the slightest, allowing Bianca Kane to take her anger out on him.

As he was choked to the point his face turned purple and he struggled to breathe, a few involuntary tears streamed down his cheeks, making him look both helpless and innocent.

Vianne Kane, who was coming downstairs with red-rimmed eyes, saw the scene. Horrified, she quickened her pace, rushed down the stairs, and threw herself forward. After a Herculean effort, she finally managed to pull Bianca Kane away.

Bianca Kane, sobbing uncontrollably, pushed Vianne Kane away and threw herself into Joseph Shaw’s arms for comfort.

Vianne Kane breathed a sigh of relief. She helped Damian Morgan up from the floor, her face full of concern. "Damian, are you okay?"

"I’m so sorry, Vianne. I was talking with Grandpa before he died, and I didn’t notice he was feeling unwell. It’s my fault I didn’t realize it sooner..."

The man’s acting was superb. He looked remorseful as he slapped himself, tears streaming down his face as if they cost nothing.

"Damian, don’t do this."

Vianne Kane’s heart ached for him. She quickly grabbed his hands and pulled him into a tight embrace.

"It’s not your fault. Don’t blame yourself."

Witnessing such a farce right after arriving, Sophie Shaw remained unusually silent.

She tried to make herself as inconspicuous as possible, then took Alaric Blackwood’s arm and led him outside, into a glass greenhouse in the backyard.

It was quiet and warm in here. A thermostat ensured that the plants and flowers in the greenhouse wouldn’t freeze, even in winter.

Mr. Kane had been very fond of these plants and flowers when he was alive and had even hired a dedicated gardener to look after them.

After a quick look around to make sure they were alone, Sophie Shaw pulled Alaric Blackwood down to sit on a bench inside the greenhouse.

The image of Bianca Kane fiercely choking Damian Morgan kept replaying in her mind.

Although she didn’t like Bianca Kane, she had a strong feeling that Mr. Kane’s death might not be so simple.

"I suspect Damian Morgan, too."

As she said the words, a wave of fear washed over her.

’If Mr. Kane’s death really is connected to Damian Morgan, then he’s nothing short of a devil. And I dated a man like that for three years.’

’If it weren’t for the fact that I had no use to Damian Morgan, that he couldn’t be bothered with me, I might have met a grim fate myself.’

She couldn’t help but worry about Vianne Kane’s safety.

Even though they didn’t get along well, she and Vianne Kane had lived under the same roof for ten years. There was no deep affection between them, but no deep-seated hatred either.

She didn’t want to see Vianne Kane meet the same fate as Mr. Kane.

Especially since Vianne Kane was the woman Alaric Blackwood loved...

’He sent the video to Mr. Kane, didn’t he? It was to expose Damian Morgan’s true colors because he didn’t want the woman he loves to be with Damian.’
