Chapter 73: Chapter 73: Dying with Eyes Open

"Speaking of backers..."

Sophie Shaw smiled at Damian Morgan. "If you don’t want to lose the Kane Family as your backer, you’d better sign this right now. I don’t have the patience to waste my time on you."

"And as for bandits, you’re the one who got these shares for nothing. You’re the bigger bandit here, aren’t you?"

Damian Morgan was left speechless. fгee𝑤ebɳoveɭ.cøm

Faced with Sophie Shaw’s threat, he had no choice but to grip the pen and sign his name on the share transfer agreement.

After confirming the signature was correct, Sophie Shaw tossed a USB drive to Damian Morgan. It contained the video of him and Yara Valentine’s sordid affair.

"Once all the paperwork is finalized, I promise I’ll delete the backup copy from my phone."

With that, Sophie Shaw gave her bodyguards a look.

The two bodyguards released Damian Morgan.

The man’s shoulders slumped instantly. He collapsed into the chair, his eyes red as he stared at the USB drive on the desk before snatching it up and clenching it tightly in his hand.

"Sophie Shaw, you’re ruthless."

He clenched his jaw, grinding his teeth as he inserted the USB into the computer. After a quick glance at the video, he deleted it on the spot, leaving no loose ends.

Then, he removed the USB drive and stood up to pack his personal belongings.

Just as he finished packing his things into a cardboard box and was about to leave with it, the office door was pushed open.

Yara Valentine rushed in, her face etched with panic.

She had seen Sophie Shaw barge into Damian Morgan’s office with three people in tow, looking menacing. When they didn’t come out for a long time, she grew anxious and ran over to check on the situation.

Seeing Damian Morgan looking utterly dejected, clutching a cardboard box as if he were leaving, she turned to Sophie Shaw, her heart filling with rage. "Sophie Shaw, you’re despicable!"

"Miss Valentine, you’re fired."

Yara Valentine’s eyes widened. "What?"

"I have no use for a disloyal person like Damian Morgan. And since you’re involved with him and have such a terrible attitude toward your new boss, I can’t possibly keep you on. You’d best find employment elsewhere."

"Sophie Shaw, you—"

Yara Valentine shrieked and lunged at her, only to be grabbed by the two bodyguards and hauled out of the room.

The woman’s shouts echoed from outside. Damian Morgan’s expression was grim.

He shot Sophie Shaw a venomous glare, then a resentful smile touched his lips. "Sophie Shaw, this isn’t over."

The man walked out, carrying the cardboard box.

Sophie Shaw’s taut nerves finally relaxed. She turned and sat on the sofa.

Preston Chase noticed she looked a little pale and asked, "Ma’am, are you all right?"

"I’m fine, thank you."

...

For the next few days, Sophie Shaw was busy handling the relevant paperwork. Preston Chase no longer accompanied her, but Alaric Blackwood had arranged for the two bodyguards to stay with her.

After about a week, all the procedures were complete.

Sophie Shaw became the new boss of Heart of the Ocean. She redecorated the office, replaced the secretary who had been fiercely loyal to Damian Morgan, and hired an experienced female assistant.

Damian Morgan stewed in his room, deeply uneasy. He worried that Sophie Shaw would play dirty and, after getting the shares, stab him in the back by sending the video to the Kane Family.

However, Sophie Shaw proved to be more trustworthy than he had imagined.

Early that morning, he received a new message.

It was from Sophie Shaw—a short screen recording showing her deleting the video of his affair with Yara Valentine from her phone’s gallery.

The weight on his chest finally lifted, and he let out a long sigh of relief.

Just then, he got a call from Vianne Kane.

"Damian, my scenes are almost done filming. I’ll be back in a couple of days."

He was a little surprised. "So soon?"

"It’s just one movie. I’m only a minor supporting character, so I didn’t have many scenes to begin with. It only took a few days to finish."

"Which day exactly? I’ll pick you up from the airport."

"I’ll message you when the time comes."

"Okay."

He showered Vianne Kane with sweet nothings over the phone for a while. Hearing a knock at his door, he ended the call, got up to open it, and found the butler standing there.

"The master wants to see you in the study."

He nodded, tucked his phone into his pocket, and strode out of the room. He went downstairs to the study to see Mr. Kane.

The real power of the Kane Group was now mostly in the hands of Bianca Kane. As the newly appointed chairperson, Bianca Kane was extremely busy. Mr. Kane, having stepped down, was now living a life of leisure.

He was sitting before the sofa, leisurely sipping his tea.

Seeing Damian Morgan, the old man’s expression didn’t change. "Come, sit," he said indifferently.

"Grandfather, you were looking for me?" freeweɓnovel.cøm

Damian Morgan sat ramrod straight on the seat opposite the old man.

"I know exactly what kind of person you are. A man who can’t even control his own dick. I will never agree to let you marry into the Kane Family. Break up with Vianne, pack your things, and get the hell out."

The old man’s tone was contemptuous, as if Damian were a piece of low-life trash not even worthy of a glance.

"Does Vianne know you’re kicking me out?"

’Just before coming to see the old man, I’d just finished cheering Vianne Kane up.’

"You were messing around with other women, and that Shaw girl got something on you. You’ve already returned the shares, and you still have the nerve to mention Vianne?"

The old man’s sudden mention of Sophie Shaw made Damian Morgan’s heart sink to his stomach.

"How did you know about that? Did Sophie Shaw send you something?"

"Cut the crap and get out."

The old man had lost his patience, his tone growing harsh.

He had indeed received a video of Damian Morgan’s affair with a woman, but it had come from an unknown number. He wasn’t sure who had sent it.

In any case, he now saw Damian Morgan’s true nature. He was just like Bianca Kane’s first husband—ungrateful for what he had and insatiably greedy.

Damian Morgan narrowed his eyes. He stood up, walked to the study door, and pulled it open to glance outside.

After confirming the hallway was empty, he closed and locked the door.

This action made Mr. Kane raise an eyebrow, a vague sense of foreboding creeping in.

He watched Damian Morgan warily. The man had shed his usual gentle and refined demeanor, his face now contorted with a vicious, murderous rage. He charged forward, grabbed the old man forcefully by the collar, and raised his fist as if to smash it into his face.

With his old bones and a severe heart condition, the shock of Damian’s attack caused his illness to flare up on the spot.

Damian’s fist never landed. He was only trying to scare him.

He saw the old man gasping for breath, his hand fumbling for his suit pocket, tremblingly pulling out a pill bottle.

Damian Morgan released his grip on his collar, allowing him to shakily unscrew the bottle.

Just as he poured the pills into his palm and was about to take them, Damian Morgan slapped his hand.

The bottle and the pills in his palm all scattered across the floor.

The old man bent over, his back arched, one hand pressed to his heart while the other reached for the pill bottle on the floor.

Damian Morgan stuck out his foot and kicked the bottle, sending it rolling just out of the old man’s outstretched reach.

He stuffed his hands into his suit pockets and looked down, his face cold, watching impassively as the old man tumbled from the sofa.

The old man, holding on to his last breath, pulled his phone from his pocket, trying to call for help.

But before he could successfully dial the number, he collapsed face-down on the floor. With his last breath, he stared in the direction of Damian Morgan, his eyes wide with terror.

The old man died with his eyes open.

Damian Morgan quickly fled the scene.

Ensuring no one had seen him, he quickly returned to his room upstairs and even made a phone call to Vianne Kane.

"Your grandfather just spoke with me. He said that when you get back, we should go get our marriage license. He even said he’d arrange a position for me at the company after we’re married."
