Chapter 70: Chapter 70: Shameless Scoundrel
Sated, the two of them murmured to each other on the sofa.
"How did that Sophie Shaw end up back at work? And parachuted straight into the Design Department?" Yara Valentine asked, her voice hoarse.
Damian Morgan kissed her cheek. "She studied design to begin with."
"Then why was her previous position an assistant?"
"She volunteered to help me." freewēbnoveℓ.com
"Because she likes you?"
Damian let out a hum of agreement. Wanting to shut down Yara’s line of questioning, he pecked her hard on the lips.
Yara’s cheeks flushed slightly. As he leaned in for another kiss, she pushed against his shoulder. "So Sophie likes you, but do you like her?"
"I don’t."
Damian answered without a second thought.
Yara snorted. "Then what about your fiancée, Vianne Kane?"
"You guess."
"You’re so annoying. Why can’t you just give me a straight answer instead of making me guess?"
Damian just smiled, offering no response.
Yara knew better than to keep pressing on certain topics, so she changed the subject. "Sophie’s back at work, and of all places, she chose the Design Department. Could she be after the Heart of the Ocean?"
"She’s a shareholder. I can’t stop her if she wants to come back. Besides, the company officially starts the acquisition process next week. Whatever she’s planning, it’s too late. She’ll just have to accept her fate."
"I asked her today if you two had ever dated. She said you were together for three years. Is that true?"
"Of course not."
Damian twirled a lock of her long hair and brought it to his nose, inhaling lightly. "She was just my assistant, deluding herself into thinking she could be with me."
"So it was all one-sided?"
"What else could it be?"
A wave of nausea washed over Sophie. ’I can’t believe how shameless Damian is. He won’t even admit we dated.’
"Are you going home tonight?"
The question seemed to annoy Damian, but he feigned patience. "I have to. That old geezer from the Kane family is keeping a close eye on me. I can’t stay out overnight, just in case."
Yara nodded understandingly. "Then you should hurry home. I’ll take care of the security footage."
"Wipe it clean."
"I know. Don’t you trust me?"
"I do."
Damian stroked her head, placed another kiss on her cheek, then got dressed and left reluctantly.
Sophie saved the recording. To be safe, she immediately sent a copy to Anne on WeChat and told her to keep it secure.
She deleted her chat history with Anne. After Yara got dressed, turned off the lights in the break room, and left, Sophie quietly slipped out of the closet.
Yara was heading to the security office to deal with the surveillance footage. Once she rewound the recording, she would quickly discover that Sophie had been hiding in the break room.
Sophie couldn’t risk staying there. Besides, her car was still in the parking lot. Although she’d parked in an inconspicuous corner, there was no guarantee Damian wouldn’t notice it when he went to get his own car.
If she was discovered, she’d have to face two opponents. Taking on two at once was out of the question.
Her mind raced as she ran. Bursting out of the break room, she bolted for the stairwell and fled down the stairs, abandoning any thought of getting her car. She was afraid of running into Damian. Her plan was to dash out of the office building and immediately hail a cab from the roadside.
Meanwhile, Yara, having reached the security office, saw Sophie run out of the break room on the monitor. Her heart leaped in shock, and she immediately dialed Damian’s number.
Before she could speak, Damian cut in. "Sophie’s car is still in the lot. She’s still in the company."
"I know. I just saw her come out of the break room. She must be heading downstairs. Intercept her on the ground floor. Grab her, don’t let her get away."
Yara remained relatively calm. Knowing Damian hadn’t left yet gave her some reassurance.
She didn’t deal with the security footage right away. Without hanging up, she grabbed her bag and rushed out.
The elevator was stopped on the first floor. She immediately ran to the stairwell, and just as she expected, she heard the sound of frantic footsteps from below.
"She’s taking the stairs down."
Yara relayed the information to Damian.
Sophie clearly heard the woman’s voice. Peeking over the railing, she saw the figure of Damian chasing her from below. Panic seized her. She had no choice but to dial 911 while sprinting toward the stairwell exit.
She reached the fourth floor, which was occupied by an e-commerce company. At this hour, a few employees were still around—mostly hosts who were live-streaming to sell products.
She ducked into an empty live-stream room, crouched in a corner, and spoke to the police. She clearly stated her location, briefly explained the situation, and then hung up. freёwebnoѵel.com
Anne hadn’t replied for a while. Worried that Anne was busy and hadn’t seen her message, Sophie sent a copy of the video she’d recorded to Alaric Blackwood on WeChat, just in case.
The moment she deleted the chat history, the door to the live-stream room was pushed open.
A tall figure, backlit by the hallway light, advanced on her step by step.
A large shadow fell over her.
It was Damian.
For the first time, his face twisted into a vicious expression as he looked at her, as if he wanted to tear her to shreds.
She instinctively shrank back. "I’ve already called the police. I’d advise you not to do anything rash."
"The police?"
Damian sneered. "Are you stupid? Secretly recording someone is illegal. You dare to call the police?"
Sophie feigned a moment of shock. Damian seized the opportunity, grabbing her by the collar and yanking her to her feet. He clamped one hand over her mouth and the other around her waist, forcefully dragging her out.
She was dragged out of the e-commerce company’s office and into the elevator lobby.
Just then, Yara caught up, emerging from the stairwell. Damian shot her a look, signaling for her to go back and wipe the security footage clean.
Yara understood immediately. Without a word, she turned and ran back up the stairs.
The police hadn’t arrived yet. Damian, still restraining Sophie, fished her phone out of her jacket pocket. "Password."
Sophie struggled fruitlessly and kept her mouth shut.
"You can keep quiet now, but do you think you can refuse to cooperate when the police get here?"
"Damian, aren’t you afraid of this blowing up? Of word getting back to the Kanes?"
"You won’t get the chance to blow it up."
The man looked completely in control, as if he had a master plan. He had no intention of taking her away. Instead, he waited for the police to arrive, ready to accompany them to the station to "resolve the issue."
Since secretly recording was indeed illegal, the police ordered Sophie to delete the video.
Damian’s cheating was a moral issue. His actions didn’t break the law, but secretly recording someone did.
Sophie feigned reluctance, deleting the video in front of the police and Damian.
After a verbal warning from the police, Sophie was released.
She had just stepped out of the police station when Damian followed right behind her.
He used his tall frame to block her path.
"Do you have any other copies?"
’In such a short time,’ he thought, ’she couldn’t have had a chance to make a backup. But what if?’
"No."
"You’d better not be lying to me."
"Damian, when did you and Yara get together?"
According to Sophie’s memory, Yara had come to Heart of the Ocean about half a year ago. Like Damian, she was a local, but she had graduated from a university in another city.
Yara’s family wasn’t fabulously wealthy, but they were comfortably well-off. ’Why would someone like her get involved with Damian?’
’Knowing full well he already has a fiancée, what could Yara possibly want from him?’
’I suspect the two of them might have known each other for a long time... ’
