Chapter 31: Capture The Flag
The breeze passed through the windows and felt eerily cold. Footsteps can be heard outside each time people pass by their classroom’s corridor because of how quiet the inside is.
Inside the room of Class 1-A, everyone was breathing subtly yet fearfully as they quietly observed Ulrich, their homeroom teacher, skimming through their test papers.
His eyes were indifferent, lacking his usual warm demeanor.
He checked everyone’s test papers at an insane speed that almost looked unbelievable to look at.
Because it was examination day today, there were no classes aside from their homeroom.
Finally, as if done arranging the test papers, Ulrich seemed ready to hand out their exams back to them, which would dictate whether joining the celebration was eligible or take extra classes if they failed.
Everyone who wasn’t confident was on the edge’s seat, which implies that while everyone was fighting their way to the top to qualify, the rest who didn’t pass the current passing score will be forced to study instead.
"I see..."
Ulrich nods in acknowledgment as his gaze sweeps across the entirety of the room before calling out a student.
"Cillian Sparrow, please stand up."
Once his name was called, the nervousness others felt died down, while the top students, Melissa and Willow, had their faces darkened.
Their eyes and ears all looked towards the edge of the seat inside the classroom to look at Cillian.
Cillian calmly stood up once he was called, the tip of his lips curling upwards that almost looked like a mocking smirk.
Of course, that smile was mostly directed at Melissa and Willow, who are both looking at him.
Especially the classroom president, Willow, who found it unbelievable that he was called yet again.
The spot for getting the highest grade was always fought over between her and Melissa, after all.
Cillian was just supposed to be below them, at least that’s what Willow thought.
"Yes, sir?"
Unperturbed by that smug smile, Ulrich clapped once as he expressed warmth.
"Congratulations, you’re the top student for this exam. For that, one merit will be given as a reward. On a side note, the top students in each class receive a merit. So now you guys know that I’m not the one who administered this reward. Anyways, here, received this reward."
Cillian walked quietly as he cast a glance at Willow’s face. Her disbelief expression was already gone, along with any emotion.
Cillian wasn’t called because he placed last. In fact, it was the opposite.
This has been confirmed now.
Cillian’s mocking face wasn’t helping at all when she kept encountering the problem of not having any information about the celebration. This took another heavy mental toll on her mind.
Willow avoided his gaze and silently closed her eyes.
Melissa, on the other hand, didn’t show any emotion after the initial shock. She silently nudged her glass up to her bridge while being quiet as well, avoiding meeting his gaze.
’What a bummer.’
Cillian had to stop his thoughts about teasing them when they weren’t looking.
After finally coming in front, Cillian received his test paper and merit at the same time. Ulrich congratulated him once more before he started calling the names of the students who followed him.
When he was all done, Ulrich happily informed them.
"No one failed the test. Meaning, everyone here will be able to participate in the celebration."
Even with that cheerful tone, no one celebrated.
All because the tough challenge had yet to pass, since the ’detailed’ explanation about the incoming tournament will be announced today.
As if amused by what he was seeing, Ulrich chuckled.
"I see. Looks like this class didn’t manage to grab the information about it. All good, it’s not like you weren’t the only one. In fact, only a handful of classes managed to get it. I guess it had been hidden pretty well?"
Even though his comment was supposed to make the classroom jolly, it only made it worse.
Only Cillian seemed to have taken it lightly as he giggled, making others steal a few glances at him, but he left them be.
"Now then..."
Picking up something from his drawer, Ulrich began to wave his hand as words started to draw out from the board on his back.
Once he grabbed a stack of papers from his drawer, Ulrich straightened up, but upon seeing the students watching the board intently, he shifted to the side and spoke flatly.
"The celebration will be all about this theme: Capture The Flag."
Already having seen much about how the celebration would work, Cillian listened, though not appearing clueless like a fool, such as others.
At this moment, he didn’t know if anyone had already noticed that he acted differently, but still, he ought to listen since Ulrich had been tolerant of him, whether it was the previous Cillian or him.
With a pause, Ulrich waved his hand once again as papers flew from each student’s hands, giving out a paper filled with what one should know for the celebration.

Trivia #4: Deaths are likely to happen in any celebration. However, it is heavily reminded and advised to students that this is a way to celebrate the birth of the academy, not to fight over it.
Once everyone gets to the scrim through the paper that has been given by Ulrich, everyone quiets down.
Cillian, as well, observed if something slipped by his eyes.
Nothing.
In fact, Cillian saw the rules lacking.
After all, he had seen the full papers from Bard.
’So Bard had the full version of how the celebration would go. The teachers might have it as well, but they just released what they think is necessary for the students to know... for now at least.’
Cillian scoffed.
’How... stingy.’
