Chapter 185: War March

As the wagon rocked from side to side on the bumpy road, my mind drifted off to Ren. I wondered where he is now. Ren was probably riding his horse somewhere in the front along with Shin and his other war generals. The journey would take a couple of days and during all that time I had to avoid running into Ren. Thankfully there were so many soldiers here that running into him would actually be a small miracle in and of itself.

Although I dreaded the moment when Ren would find out that I had tagged along on this journey with him, I also wanted to meet him soon. I wanted to see that he was doing alright and most of all, I wanted to share our usual small talks and laughter again.

“You should rest now while you can,” Doctor Kai spoke up as he turned to face me.

“I will try...” I replied softly.

The other members of the medical team had already started taking naps here and there. Perhaps the journey was making them feel tired. I wondered if any of them felt motion sick.

“Go to sleep. Try to sleep if you can. I don’t want to scare you but, we could be marching directly into war the moment that we arrive. We don’t know exactly what the situation is like there. It’s highly probable that we would have to get to work right away upon arrival and there would be no stopping until someone has won or lost the war...” Doctor Kai said as his usually relaxed face turned very grim.

I was sure that he was recalling some unpleasant memories. Doctor Kai was old and very experienced. I knew without asking that he had been to war like this many times before. He has seen and lived through many crises such as this. freewёbn૦νeɭ.com

“I’ll rest up as you suggested. Thank you so much, Doctor Kai,” I replied before I closed my eyes and willed myself to go to sleep.

...

A few days later, we finally arrived at our destination. Finally, I was back on the soil of my own hometown once again. When I left, I had no idea when or if I would get to come back here. Honestly, I thought that I would feel amazingly thrilled to finally return. That made me feel quite disappointed. Now that I was finally back, I felt no sense of joy at all. The only feelings I felt were anxiousness and stress.

There was a sick feeling deep inside my belly and that told me that something bad was waiting for us just around the corner. I looked out of the small wooden window of the wagon at the landscape of my own land. Surprisingly, it felt very alien to me. After a while of observing, I realized that I was the one that was alien to the land now.

Once I had struggled and fought to protect this land when war broke out. Desperately, I tried to save as many lives as I could as I worked alongside Uncle Gobei, Auntie and various other medical personnel. I let out a soft dry laugh at the irony of it all. Who would have thought that I would be returning to war with my own hometown just to be on the other side?

Uncle Gobei and Auntie...I wondered if they were well...

It wasn’t long until the wagon came to a complete stop. Doctor Kai immediately gave us instruction to remain seated and that no one was allowed to leave the wagon. After that, he quickly got out.

“He’s going to join a meeting along with other leaders. Then he’ll tell us what we should do. For now...we wait...” another doctor quickly explained to me.

“I see. Thank you for letting me know...” I said before smiling a little at him.

Better to make friends and get to know everyone. I’ll be working alongside them in what was going to be a very stressful and busy environment very soon. It wasn’t very long until Doctor Kai came back. Everyone was tensed as they waited to hear of the situation from Doctor Kai.

“Rest easy everyone. Apparently, the worst has not started yet. That’s good news for us, because we should have around a day and a night to set up everything,” Doctor Kai announced with a very reassuring smile.

I heard many people let out sighs of relief at the news. It was crucial to have everything set up properly before we could efficiently treat patients. The tent, the beds, the medical equipment, the medicine and everything else had to be in order. Without the proper time to do that, we wouldn’t be able to tend to the patients properly at all. ƒreeωebnovel.ƈom

“That’s a relief. We should get to work on setting up immediately,” one of the doctors said and everyone nodded in agreement.

“Let’s unload and unpack the necessities for now. I’ll take you to the location where we will set up the medical camps later on when the exact location is confirmed,” Doctor Kai instructed.

“Yes, Doctor...” many people said in unison as they accepted his orders.

Shin didn’t mention that he had any specific orders for me to follow once we arrived. Since that was the case, I decided to work along the medical team as a team member as per normal. I spent the remaining day time helping the team unpack and arrange supplies. Soon we were informed of the location where we needed to set up the tents for our field hospital.

Everyone worked hard but with surprising synchronization and teamwork. By the end of the very long day, the tent was set up and all beds were laid out along with the basic medical equipment. There were many things left that had to be done; however, with the way things are now, even if a war broke out at this moment, we were already ready to go.

It was just as the sun had starting setting that I heard that someone was looking for me. It must be Shin.

“My Lady...this way...” Doctor Kai said to me softly as he motioned for me to follow him.

There standing in front of the medical camp was Shin, dressed in his full war armor.
