Chapter 171: Disturbed Peace
Time passed by and little by little I managed to return to my peaceful life. It has been around a month now since Jeely’s public execution. Although that was the talk of the town at the time, people have since moved on. No one spoke of her anymore and it was just like she had never existed in the palace. As for me, I still mourned over her from time to time. However, I knew that I had to move on too.
Never will I forget her and all that she’s done for me. People tend to forget her years of good deed after she committed her crime; however, I beg to differ. I returned to work, train, and study at the hospital with my mentors. With the exam coming up, I needed to focus on both my patients and also studying from textbooks. The exam was a combination of working on actual cases and a written test. ƒreewebɳovel.com
I wasn’t at all concerned about the actual case; however, I was scared of the written test. After finishing work at the hospital, I would return to my room and study from medical textbooks. I was so wrapped up in my study that Ren scolded me for going to bed late.
Ultimately my efforts paid off. With so many uncertainties in life, I was very pleased to see that hard work still led to success.
“Congratulations, My Lady, for passing your tests,” one of my mentors said with a polite smile.
“Thank you very much! It’s all because of your help,” I replied cheerfully.
“Not at all...you tried your best,” he replied with a kind smile.
“Yes, you worked very hard, My Lady. We are very proud to have been of help to you...” another royal doctor said.
“I can’t believe that I finally got it...my qualification as a field doctor!” I said happily.
Sure, it was still a far cry from a full qualification of being a royal doctor, but it was a good start. Most importantly, it meant that I had enough skills and experience under my belt to be of use to the hurt and wounded on the battlefield.
“You may have the qualification now but...I still think that the battlefield isn’t a place for a woman to be. It is a very dangerous and barbaric place...” my mentor spoke up softly.
I knew that he cared, and I could understand his concern. However, we all had our own dreams...
Instead of arguing my case needlessly, I just nodded and smiled. Today was the day that I got my positive test results back. I wasn’t about to let an argument ruin it all. As I stood smiling with my paper certificate in my hand, little did I know then that the worst had yet to come...
...
“My Lady, this way please...” my mentor called me over to where a wounded soldier lay on a stretcher.
His arm was bleeding quite heavily but apart from that he didn’t seem too heavily wounded. I can handle this alone, no problem.
“I can handle it,” I told my mentor confidently.
“Thank you. There’s another case over there so I would appreciate it if you could take this off my hands,” my mentor said as he got up to his feet.
“Yes, no worries,” I replied calmly.
The patient was moaning softly in pain, and I quickly applied some medicine to numb the pain of his wound. The cut wasn’t large, but it was deep. To be more accurate, it wasn’t a cut. This man was stabbed. My brows furrowed as I worked to stop his bleeding before I could apply medicine to heal his wound and stitch it up.
At first, I didn’t understand why his case was sent here because it didn’t seem serious enough to warrant them sending him to the capital for treatment. However, on closer inspection, I found that there were some shards stuck in his muscles inside his wound that needed to be removed. I sighed softly; the case had gotten more complicated than before.
There were so many patients now that we didn’t have enough room for individual patients. We ended up treating patients in many large rooms and sometimes even in the hallways. It reminded me of the time when I treated soldiers during the war in my hometown. I couldn’t believe that I would be witnessing something similar in such a huge hospital like this.
“The town was burning. Everything was going up in flames...people ran...everywhere...chaos...”
“It’s a war out there already. Not just some battle...”
“Many towns got involved...or so I heard...”
“Which town did you fight in?”
“Emerald Meadows. You?”
“Amber Leaves...big mess...many died and wounded...”
My hand froze in place as the conversation of the wounded soldiers drifted to my ears. Did I hear correctly just now? Did that man just mention the name of my hometown?
Without knowing what I was doing, I got up to my feet and headed towards the soldier that had mentioned the name of my hometown. It has to be some sort of mistake, right? How is it possible that my town is at war? I’m here...I’m the Lady White Lotus...so how come?
“Excuse me...just now, did you mention the town of the Amber leaves?” I asked, trying to keep my voice from shaking.
“Umm...yes, I did,” the soldier replied, sounding a little confused.
“Are you sure? Are you sure that it’s the town of the Amber Leaves?” I asked again.
“Yes...I spent almost a week there, so I’m pretty sure...” the soldier replied.
“What is happening there?” I asked as panic gripped me.
“We soldiers don’t know much about politics but for sure a war has broken out there. We’ve been fighting there for more than a week now. I was part of the second wave of reinforcements...” the soldier replied.
War?! In my town?! How can this be happening?!
The soldier went on to describe the war, his friends and what he did there but all of that was lost to me. I didn’t hear anything as I stood there in shock. My town signed a peace treaty already and we followed all demands. They even sent me here to serve Ren to fulfill one of the conditions of the treaty. So how is it possible that my town is at war?
