Chapter 509: Chapter 509: The Resentment of a Dou Di

Liu Xi continued to stare into the glowing sphere. Within it, the image of the black-robed Dou Di hovered proudly before the towering, ten thousand zhang Bodhisattva Ancient Tree. Then, without warning, that Dou Di unleashed a devastating strike toward the ancient tree.

The tree responded in kind. From within its vast trunk surged waves of terrifying energy that collided head-on with the Dou Di’s power. Their clash tore the heavens apart—the world itself trembling and cracking under the magnitude of their battle.

Liu Xi was not surprised. The sinister gray aura that Qing Lin had sensed earlier must have been left behind by this very Dou Di. That man had tried to seize the tree’s spirit for himself—only to be slain here, his ambition ending in ruin.

The image sped up, flashing through scenes of their battle. Finally, it froze on the last moment—the black-robed Dou Di being struck violently by a storm of annihilating energy that descended from nowhere, crushing both him and the surrounding space into utter nothingness.

Under the combined assault of the Bodhisattva Ancient Tree and another mysterious Dou Di, the black-robed one had been reduced to dust.

"Two Dou Di’s..." Liu Xi murmured, his eyes alight with longing. "That era truly was a golden age of cultivation—when experts of every realm flourished, and even Dou Di’s appeared time and again!"

His heart burned with envy. If only he had lived in that age, he would not need to struggle for every wisp of Origin Qi.

But the image did not fade with the Dou Di’s death. From the collapsing void, faint black streams of energy began to emerge—thin as mist, yet filled with malevolent force.

Those wisps immediately rushed into the Bodhisattva Ancient Tree. With their entry, the tree’s once-pure aura dimmed, tainted by a subtle but chilling gloom.

"The power of a Dou Di... terrifying indeed," Liu Xi whispered. "Even in death, when both body and soul are gone, his will lingers—twisted into a curse that drives his killer to torment."

The tree that once stretched ten thousand zhang high had now withered to a few thousand, its once-serene aura corrupted by resentment.

When the illusion finished showing its message, the glowing sphere dimmed and dissolved into a wisp of invisible energy. It shot straight into Liu Xi’s forehead, flooding his mind with a stream of strange information.

Liu Xi closed his eyes and absorbed it slowly. After a long moment, he opened them again, now filled with clarity.

The Bodhisattva Ancient Tree before him had existed since time immemorial—perhaps even since the dawn of the world. But despite its power, it had never formed complete sentience. Its strength was too great; the heavens themselves resisted allowing it full intelligence. Even now, its awareness remains incomplete.

Perhaps this was the balance of heaven’s law. The weaker a being was born, the keener its mind tended to be. By contrast, the greater the natural power, the slower and more arduous the birth of true wisdom. Magical Beasts, Heavenly Flames—and this very Bodhisattva Ancient Tree—all shared this fate.

The scenes he had witnessed were from the distant Ancient Era. A severely wounded Dou Di had once sought to forcibly extract the tree’s spirit to heal himself—but his enemy and the tree joined forces and destroyed him. Yet in doing so, the tree had been stained by the Dou Di’s lingering resentment.

That was the truth of its corruption. And now, having encountered Liu Xi—one who had survived its illusion—the tree’s intent was clear.

Liu Xi clasped his fists and bowed solemnly. "Senior, I understand your will. But the resentment of a Dou Di is unimaginably vast. I am but a Half Saint—I cannot easily resolve it. Please, grant me your guidance."

The Bodhisattva Ancient Tree’s branches swayed gently. Though its mind was incomplete, its instinct for self-preservation remained.

Then—

The lush canopy shook, and more than twenty Bodhisattva Seeds dropped down, each radiating a soft, sacred glow. The aura they exuded was dozens of times purer than that of the Bodhisattva Seed Liu Xi already possessed.

Liu Xi instantly understood. Each seed contained a fragment of the tree’s own power. By refining them into pure energy and returning that energy to the tree, he could help it purge the Dou Di’s resentment.

"Very well," Liu Xi said. "Since Senior has made preparations, I won’t decline, I’ll begin at once."

Though its wisdom was imperfect, the Bodhisattva Ancient Tree’s nature remained kind. The calm, benevolent aura it radiated proved that it was not an evil being. If he could aid it in cleansing this curse, he was certain it would not refuse a small request afterward.

With that thought, Liu Xi extended his hand. The twenty-odd Bodhisattva Seeds floated toward him, shimmering like jade. At the same time, a surge of azure flame burst to life in his palm.

To be honest, it pained him. These were top-grade Bodhisattva Seeds—each one could be refined into pills capable of increasing the chance of breaking through to the Dou Saint realm.

But he had no claim to feel regret—the seeds still belonged to the tree. Only once it offered them freely would they truly be his.

Besides, this was a being on par with a Dou Di. After all, if it hadn’t possessed such strength, how could it have slain that black-robed Dou Di alongside another of its kind?

Thus, Liu Xi dared not act presumptuously. Better to follow its will and earn its favor first.

The azure flame surged higher, wrapping around a single Bodhisattva Seed. The heat was terrifying—enough to melt even that divine seed.

Moments later, the seed dissolved completely, releasing streams of tranquil energy. The pure light drifted toward the Bodhisattva Ancient Tree and merged into its trunk.

As the purified aura fused with the tree, its brilliance grew noticeably stronger, while the faint traces of dark resentment weakened.

Sha... sha... sha...

The tree’s branches rustled joyfully. Its leaves shimmered and danced, brushing against one another in a sound like gentle laughter.

If it could express emotion, it was clearly delighted—its ancient burden finally showing signs of relief.

The rustling quickened, urging Liu Xi on. The tree was almost impatient, as though a child spinning anxiously while waiting for candy.

Liu Xi smiled faintly. Even after countless ages, with its incomplete wisdom, the Bodhisattva Ancient Tree still seemed like a simple, innocent child.

With a wave of his hand, the azure flame surged once more, expanding rapidly to envelop the remaining twenty or so Bodhisattva Seeds—refining them all at once into purifying light.
