Chapter 39: Kiss me

"We’ll all do our best and share whatever information we find with each other. It’s the best way. In the same way, protect yourselves to ensure that you are not killed before then," Nico said, and I could hear a note of annoyance and frustration in his voice.

He wanted to leave, and he was making it extremely clear. Vito was visibly dissatisfied, and Gotti the same, but there was no other choice. What else was there to do but wait?

"I’ll add more cameras to the floor and change rooms if I were you," he said, turning to leave. I turned to follow, which was enough to set Vito off—his teeth clenched at me.

"...You think by following him you’ll be safe? You’re simply going to be his whore. He’ll use and discard you like everything else in his life," Vito spat, and I simply rolled my eyes, biting my tongue to avoid responding as I left.

The only thing I did was wish him death. ƒreeωebnovel.ƈom

But we had barely gotten out of the room and settled in the elevator when I asked to speak to Nico.

"There had to be a highly placed person in charge, right? From what he described, it’s not possible that..." I trailed off, confused, as I watched Nico move toward me, pulling me closer before kissing me.

It wasn’t a light kiss either—he instantly parted my lips, his hands on my jaw, pushing my mouth open, while simultaneously gripping both of my thighs. I had barely caught my breath when he pulled away, his expression mostly blank.

"Sweet," he mumbled under his breath, his serious expression making it take me longer to recover from the astonishment I felt as I stared into his eyes. I felt him lean closer instead of away just as the elevator pinged, signaling that we had arrived.

I pulled away as quickly as I could, doing my best to appear unperturbed. My lashes fluttered as I ignored the gaze of the nurses already standing by the door, their expressions curious—almost like they could sense that something had just happened.

Stepping past them, I headed straight toward the cars, bodyguards and Nico following behind me, while I tried to crush the restless butterflies and tingling that ran through my body.

I didn’t get into the car—and I wasn’t going to—not until Nico confirmed that it was safe and trusted his gut. Even then, I still wanted to distance myself from him. It was almost a need at this point, enough to make my heart race just a bit harder in my chest.

But I had just raised my gaze to Nico as he came closer, noting the slight frown on his face, which meant something was wrong.

"Is it the car?" I began to ask, only for him to push me against the car, covering me with his body and kissing me again, holding me in place with his hand around my neck, confident that he could feel the hammering pulse in my throat.

We were in the parking lot, and apart from the bodyguards standing around us, it was crowded with people who had just come to the hospital or were leaving. But none of that mattered as he slowly kissed me—without any sense of urgency this time.

I didn’t want it—especially not in front of so many people. Worse, we could be videoed or recorded—but he didn’t give me any chance to escape, kissing my lips until I gasped and gave in, allowing him access as he captured my tongue, his body pressed flush against mine, kissing me so deeply that I was out of breath before he finally pulled away.

Even then, it was just his lips. His body remained glued to mine as he spoke in a husky, low tone:

"I kiss you, and you run, like that will change something. I can kiss you every second I lay my eyes on you, Carmen," he said, daring me to look away, his legs firmly wedged between mine.

"...In public or private, because that’s what the contract you agreed to says. Running is stupid, and kissing me back is the only thing I expect from you, yes?" he asked.

I leaned back and away, but it was impossible with his body against mine and the car at my back. My face flushed, my eyes watery, as I stared at him.

"Yes?" he asked again, and I nodded, showing that I understood, waiting for him to pull away. But instead, he shifted his head to the side, leaning closer to my neck and trailing kisses that sent a tingle of pleasure through me—one I didn’t know was possible.

My breath grew heavier as he slid his lips up to my earlobes, his tongue grazing them just enough to make me gasp. I pushed against him, my heart hammering harder in my chest than ever before. I hadn’t known that the grazing of teeth and tongue against my ears could create such sensations.

"Nico!" I snapped at him. "...You’re acting like a horny teenager."

No part of the contract said I couldn’t insult him—with a smile. Moreover, kissing my body was part of the...

’Shit! Shit!’ I realized that he hadn’t actually specified which parts of my body he could kiss. That meant he practically had free reign. I glared at him.

He simply fixed me with a steady, dark gaze. It was nighttime, and where we were wasn’t fully lit—but it wouldn’t be hard for passersby to tell that we’d been kissing.

"I feel like one," he murmured with a low, raspy chuckle, leaning back to continue kissing the side of my neck—a sensation I didn’t need. His kisses sent vibrations straight to my lower belly and further down to places I’d rather not dwell on.

I pushed him away, speaking before he could remind me that I couldn’t say no to his kisses.

"I’ll kiss you if we head back into the car and go home," I told him, expecting him to relent and pull away—considering the concession I’d made—only to meet his gaze and see a subtle hint of greed in his eyes.

"Why? But I liked kissing your ears," he whispered, his breath against them making my heart pound harder. Whatever he was doing, he knew exactly what he was doing. And I hated how little of that experience I had.
