Chapter 17: Swift Wolves
"Fuck, what was that?" He was deeply shaken, as it was something that had never happened before. He had used his bloodline ability numerous times to track bloodline awakeners, but he never experienced pressure like this.
"What happened? Why has your face become a bit pale?" Seeing Ace’s expression changed a bit, one of them asked.
"Aah... nothing, just their ability to hide is quite good." He quickly answered and returned to his former creepier and confident expression. He didn’t tell the truth, as he felt excited seeing this prey was a bit different, and a crazy excitement seemed to appear in his mind.
A twisted smile slowly spread across his face.
The more exciting the chase... The sweeter the kill will be.
"Then let’s go." Among them the youngest one’s voice echoed. His voice clearly showed superiority with a commanding tone, and yet none of them said anything. They all calmly nodded, and then Ace started to lead them while following the trail. free𝑤ebnovel.com
They were fast and moved as fast as they could. All of them were determined not to let the three run away.
While this group was following the trail, within the Blackthorn family’s estate something unbelievable was going on.
Inside a massive hall capable of holding hundreds of people, only two figures remained.
One knelt on the floor with his forehead pressed against the ground, not daring to raise his head even slightly.
The other sat calmly upon a chair with an indifferent aura surrounding her.
"Darius, you have disappointed me too much." She said with an indifferent voice, sitting on the top chair like a sovereign looking down on Darius.
"Miss, give me a chance. I already sent the best, and they would definitely bring the kid back even if he had awakened his bloodline." Darius didn’t dare to look up but begged for a chance from the mysterious lady.
She seems to remain silent, and this silence seems to bring unimaginable pressure upon Darius as he feels the decision will decide whether he will live or die.
And finally she spoke. "Very well, let your people try, but if they fail, you will have to bear the consequences."
Darius felt as though he had been granted a pardon from execution.
"Y-Yes, Miss! Thank you for giving me another chance. They will definitely bring him back."
Only then did he dare lift his head from the floor. He felt like he was finally able to breathe. After bowing once more, he quickly left the hall. He had to prepare, as this might be his last chance.
As his figure disappeared from the room, the woman sitting upon the throne-like chair quietly murmured to herself, "As if catching them would be so easy..."
A faint smile appeared on her lips. "After all, they are truly blessed."
"Maybe I should move myself..."
Max didn’t know what just happened in the Blackthorn family or that the mysterious lady who made the family leader of Blackthorn tremble in fear decided to make her move herself.
Not knowing the dangers ahead, he, along with the brothers, moved forward, but as everything was going well, they met trouble.
"Wait!" Max’s sharp senses felt the steady and fluid motion of blood. He immediately felt dozens of such powerful blood energies surrounding them.
"We are surrounded", he quickly alerted Andrew and Mathew. Both of them quickly became alert as they believed Max’s senses.
Grrr... Grrr... Grr...
Low growls echoed through the forest. One after another, large figures emerged from the shadows between the trees.
Wolves.
An entire pack of them. Each beast was nearly the size of a tiger. Their claws were sharp enough to tear through flesh and bone with ease, while their eyes glowed with predatory intelligence.
These wolves were exactly the same as the archer who followed them was riding. Max felt the powerful blood energy within them, which wasn’t much weaker than a bloodline awakener’s.
"Be careful; they are called Swift Wolves, and they burst with explosive speed during their movements, making them expert at ambush." Andrew quickly drew his sword and took the battle stance.
"Never underestimate them."
The wolves slowly circled their prey. Their green eyes never left the three humans standing in the centre. Their eyes showed the cunningness that wasn’t like some wild animal’s but like an expert hunting its prey.
Max was alert, as he knew that they weren’t some ordinary wild animals.
They belonged to the Myriad Beast Mountain Range—a place infamous for swallowing countless lives every year.
There had even been occasions when beasts from these mountains broke through into Black Iron City itself.
Whenever that happened, the slums suffered the most. Entire streets disappeared overnight. Men, women, and children alike became food.
The swift wolves then made their moves and attacked them from different sides. Their speed was very fast, and instantly they seemed to jump towards them.
Max reacted instantly.
His spear shot forward toward one of the charging wolves. ƒreeωebnovel.ƈom
But just before the strike connected—another swift wolf leaped at him from the side. A perfectly coordinated attack surprised him perfectly.
He immediately had to stop his spear to defend against it. The other Swift wolves quickly joined the fray and attacked them like well-trained soldiers.
He was surrounded by four swift wolves, whereas Andrew and Mathew were facing three swift wolves, like they could guess Max was the one who posed the greatest threat to them.
The situation became troublesome as he, although was faster than the swift wolves, was a novice when it came to fighting or mastery of his spear. He could easily overpower one or two swift wolves, but facing four of them, it became extremely difficult for him.
He looked towards the other side of the battlefield. At first, he expected Andrew and Mathew to be struggling as well.
Instead, the opposite happened.
The Sword and Spear Brothers moved together as though they shared a single mind.
Mathew’s spear forced the wolves back while Andrew’s sword struck at any opening that appeared.
Neither left a weakness for the wolves to exploit.
Their coordination was flawless. Only now did Max truly understand why people called them the Sword and Spear Brothers.
