Chapter 73: Chapter 73: A Vixen’s Seduction
"...Huh?" Sonia Quincy didn’t get what he meant. She stared blankly for a moment before finally letting out an "oh."
"You can do it!" She grabbed Felix Preston’s hand, giving it a firm tug. "Your country is counting on you! I know you’ll do great!"
"..." The corners of Felix Preston’s smile twitched, his expression turning a bit helpless. "You... I... I’m not some government official; you don’t need to cheer me on like that. What I mean is, aren’t you going to show me some support?"
"Support?" Sonia Quincy tilted her head, thinking hard. Then, she tentatively gave him a thumbs-up. "Like this?"
"...Sigh..." Felix Preston let out a heavy sigh.
"Forget it," he said, his voice laced with disappointment.
"Why forget it?" Sonia Quincy didn’t understand.
Felix Preston didn’t explain. He set the laptop bag in his hand down by his feet, then suddenly reached out, grabbed Sonia Quincy’s shoulders, and pulled her into his arms.
"!!!" Sonia Quincy’s eyes instantly widened.
SHHH—
Mrs. Preston was in the kitchen washing vegetables, unable to see what was happening by the door. Amidst the sputtering sound of the running water, Felix Preston held Sonia Quincy tight, his lips brushing against her ear as he spoke in a husky voice, "I’ll do my best. Wait for my good news."
They were so close that as Felix Preston spoke, his warm breath ghosted over the base of Sonia Quincy’s ear. Sonia Quincy’s breath hitched, and goosebumps erupted all over her skin.
"Okay, I’ll... I’ll wait for your good news." She was as stiff as a board, but her reply to Felix Preston was completely earnest.
"Heh..." Felix Preston let out a low chuckle, then tilted his head slightly and planted a kiss on Sonia Quincy’s earlobe.
Sonia Quincy’s fists instantly clenched.
Felix Preston slowly released her, his soft lips leaving a trail of kisses along her cheek as he pulled away.
Her expression was blank; she was completely stunned.
"I’m off." Having successfully wooed his wife, a satisfied Felix Preston picked up his laptop bag and headed out the door.
Sonia Quincy stood stunned at the door, her face turning red a moment later as realization dawned.
’All that kissing and hugging...’ She raised a hand to her chest, feeling her racing heart. The more she thought about it, the more she suspected Felix Preston was deliberately trying to seduce her.
The original novel described Felix Preston as gentle and abstinent, but as Sonia Quincy recalled the hug and kisses he had just given her, she couldn’t connect him with the word "abstinent" at all.
’He’s clearly a seductive fox...’ Mortified, she delivered her scathing review.
It was Monday, and Mrs. Preston had to teach at her tutoring center. Before leaving, she called Sonia Quincy into the living room, pointed at the fruit and snacks on the coffee table, and gave her some gentle instructions.
"Sonia, I prepared all this for you. Pick what you like and eat up. If you can’t finish it, just leave it. Felix can take care of it when he gets back."
"I’ve already made lunch. If you get hungry, just go heat it up."
"You’ll be home alone today, so you must be careful. If a stranger knocks, don’t open the door. Call me or Felix right away, understand?"
Sonia Quincy was already a mother-to-be, but Mrs. Preston still treated her like a child. She worriedly repeated things they teach in kindergarten, terrified Sonia would run into trouble being home alone.
Sonia Quincy didn’t spoil the mood. Mrs. Preston was serious, so she listened seriously. When she was done, Sonia nodded obediently and said, "I know, Mom. You can go to work without worrying."
Only then did Mrs. Preston feel a bit more at ease. She quickly grabbed her bag and rushed out to catch the bus.
THUD!
The door closed, leaving Sonia Quincy all alone in the large house.
After finishing breakfast and washing the dishes, Sonia Quincy went to her room to get her tablet and continued working on the last design draft.
Once this drawing was submitted, Mina Jennings would send her the final payment. This was the first money she had earned since coming to this world. It wasn’t a lot, but it was enough to make her happy.
Completely fired up, she worked on the drawing from the sofa all morning. After finishing, she sent the file to Mina Jennings and was surprised to receive her praise.
"Well, well, Classmate Bloom, getting famous and still working so hard? You were quiet all morning; I figured you were just messing around in the comment sections again."
Sonia replied: "How could I dare? I have tens of thousands of followers now, after all. How embarrassing would it be for my client to catch me slacking off in the comments?"
Mina Jennings sent a passive-aggressive emoji.
"Mm. As long as you still care about saving face, it proves you haven’t gotten a big head."
"The revision is done, so go have fun in the comments. My friend can’t come to the studio to meet you until Wednesday, so get some rest for the next two days."
Sonia: "Okay! Thanks, Ms. Jennings!"
Mina Jennings had helped Sonia Quincy a lot, both openly and behind the scenes. Sonia was grateful to her from the bottom of her heart.
She put down her tablet, lay on the sofa, and scrolled through the comments on her post. When she found an interesting one, she would jump in with a reply or two, building a rapport with her fans.
She had eaten a late breakfast and had also munched on plenty of snacks while revising the drawing, so by one in the afternoon, she wasn’t very hungry.
But she had to eat even if she wasn’t hungry. She climbed off the sofa, and just as she was about to go to the kitchen to heat up her food, she received a WeChat message from Felix Preston.
"Sonia, have you eaten yet?"
Sonia sent a voice message in reply. "About to. What about you? Have you had lunch?"
Felix texted back: "Not yet."
"Why not? Are you too busy?" she asked in another voice message.
"A little."
’Hm?’ Staring at Felix Preston’s brief reply, Sonia Quincy suddenly felt that something wasn’t right.
Exchanging cold text messages through a phone screen should make it difficult to perceive someone’s emotions. But for some reason, Sonia Quincy just knew something was off with Felix Preston.
He seemed to be in a very bad mood.
"Felix Preston, what’s wrong?"
Sonia Quincy lowered her voice and softened her tone, asking cautiously.
There was a long silence from Felix Preston’s end before a reply came.
"Sonia, I kind of want to see you."
The non-answer immediately confirmed Sonia Quincy’s worries. Her brow furrowed, and her words came out in a rush.
"Felix Preston, where are you right now? I’ll come find you."
"No! Don’t come over!"
Felix Preston’s refusal was firm. Sonia Quincy had been about to go back to her room to grab her bag, but she stopped in her tracks when she saw his message.
Felix: "Just stay at home, don’t run around. I’m fine, I just suddenly wanted to see you."
Sonia Quincy wasn’t entirely convinced.
"Really?"
Felix Preston replied with a voice message, his voice tinged with a laugh. "Really. There was a lot going on today, and I got a little emotional while I was busy. I’m fine, don’t worry. Be good and stay home."
"Alright."
Sonia Quincy turned back from the room and returned to the kitchen to place the heated-up meal on the table.
"Do you still want to see me?"
She asked, typing as she sat at the table.
Felix: "I do."
Sonia Quincy smiled. She exited WeChat, opened her camera, and took a selfie with the food on the table, making a peace sign with her left hand. After taking it, she sent it directly to Felix Preston.
Felix Preston sat in an empty stairwell, his finger tracing the smile on Sonia Quincy’s face in the photo, a bitter ache filling his heart.
