Chapter 130: Chapter 132: I’ll Invest 2 Million
"!!!"
Sonia Quincy’s eyes widened. She stared in disbelief at Felix Preston, who was approaching her on crutches.
"Y-You can get out of bed?" she stammered, blinking. It still hadn’t sunk in.
Leaning on a crutch with one hand while Jasper Linden firmly supported his other arm, Felix Preston stumbled his way over to Sonia Quincy and stood before her.
"The doctor said I could try getting out of bed and practice walking with crutches. So? How am I doing?" He grinned foolishly at Sonia Quincy, like a little kid who’d just won a race and was waiting for praise.
"You’re doing great." Sonia Quincy looked him up and down, not holding back her praise in the slightest. "You’re doing exceptionally well."
Felix Preston blinked, his eyes behind his glasses sparkling with delight.
Sonia Quincy reached out and adjusted his new glasses, which had slipped down his nose slightly. She asked gently, "How long have you been practicing? Why didn’t you wait for us to get back before you started?"
Felix Preston glanced at Jasper Linden beside him and said with a smile, "Jasper Linden happened to be here when the doctor brought it up. He had nothing better to do, so he just went and bought me a pair of crutches and made me start practicing right away."
"You just happened to be here?" Hearing this, Sonia Quincy finally tore her gaze away from Felix Preston and turned to Jasper Linden. "Look who has free time all of a sudden. I’m surprised a busy man like you had time to help Felix with his crutches."
Jasper Linden smiled nonchalantly. "I just finished up the work I had on hand. I was originally just planning to pop by the hospital, you know, go through the motions and pretend to visit Felix Preston. But who knew I’d run right into this? I was bored anyway, so I figured I might as well be a good Samaritan and help him practice."
"Well, thanks." Sonia Quincy knew he was joking and didn’t take his talk of "pretending" to heart.
She turned her gaze back to Felix Preston and asked with genuine concern, "How long did the doctor say you should practice? Your leg’s only just started to heal. You probably can’t stand for too long, right?"
Leaning on his crutches, Felix Preston did a little spin on the spot, then limped over to the edge of the hospital bed with Jasper Linden’s help and sat down. "The doctor said I can only practice for half an hour a day, spread out. Not a minute more."
"That’s fine." Sonia Quincy put down her bag, dragged a chair over, and sat down in front of Felix Preston. "We’re not in a hurry. We can just take it slow, one step at a time."
"Yeah." Felix Preston nodded, the look in his eyes a gentle one reserved only for her.
"Sonia, didn’t you say in the car you had an important announcement to make when we got back? What is it?" Evan Yates pulled Jasper Linden over to the sofa, his butt not even fully seated before he eagerly blurted out the nosy question.
"Ahem..." At the mention of this, the corners of Sonia Quincy’s mouth curved up uncontrollably. She sat up straight, trying hard to suppress a smile and put on a serious face, then looked over the three men in the room one by one with a gaze that could be described as solemn.
"Sonia, what are you doing?" Sonia Quincy’s mock-stern expression left Felix Preston a little confused. He reached out and tapped the spot between her eyebrows, his sharp eyes narrowing as his smiling gaze took on a slightly scrutinizing edge.
Sonia Quincy raised her eyebrows haughtily. "I’m not doing anything. I just think this is a pretty big deal, so it’s necessary to set the mood before announcing it."
"...Okay." Felix Preston could tell she was messing around, but he played along good-naturedly. "But I think the mood is just right. Mr. Quincy, may we begin?"
Mr. Quincy...
That form of address was a little too frightening. Sonia Quincy’s heart skipped a beat.
"...Wait, wh-what did you call me?" The color drained from her face, and the look she gave Felix Preston was visibly terrified.
Felix Preston looked bewildered. "I called you Mr. Quincy. What’s wrong? You don’t like it?"
"N-No, it’s not that I don’t like it..." Sonia Quincy licked her lips, completely flustered. "I-I’m just curious, why did you suddenly call me that?"
"No reason." Felix Preston’s reply was natural, neither sarcastic nor laden with hidden meaning. "It just slipped out as I was talking."
Sonia Quincy didn’t quite believe him. "...Did it really slip out, or are you pretending it slipped out?"
"Well..." Her strange nervousness made Felix Preston laugh. "Of course it really slipped out. Sonia, why are you reacting so strongly to that name?"
"...I-I’m not." Sonia Quincy guiltily averted her gaze, her eyes darting around distractedly. "Let’s not talk about that. Let me get back to my big announcement."
Felix Preston: "Please, announce away."
Sonia Quincy gathered her thoughts and, in as calm a tone as she could manage, asked, "Do you guys... want an investment?"
"Huh?" Felix Preston frowned, not quite understanding what Sonia Quincy meant by that.
Evan Yates glanced at the back of Felix Preston’s head, then said after a moment of stunned silence, "Sonia, that’s kind of a funny question... Of course Preston and I want an investment. We dream about it."
Of course, Sonia Quincy knew they wanted one. She was only asking to satisfy her own sense of pride.
"Then what if I invest in you?" she asked again.
"Y-You invest in us?"
Felix Preston and Evan Yates cried out in shocked disbelief at the same time.
Even Jasper Linden, who had been quietly enjoying the show from the sidelines, was so shocked his jaw dropped.
"That’s right." Sonia Quincy nodded with a charming smile. "I’m investing in you."
"How much are you thinking of investing?" Felix Preston thought she was joking, so he casually asked a follow-up question.
But to his surprise, Sonia Quincy stood up from her chair, walked over to the side table, and pulled a palm-sized cardholder from her shoulder bag. Then, she pulled a bank card from the cardholder.
The bank card was cool to the touch. When she slapped it into Felix Preston’s palm, the sensation sent a jolt through him.
Sonia Quincy: "I’m putting in two million."
"Two million?!"
The three men in the hospital room shouted the number almost in unison.
Sonia Quincy sat back down in her chair, looking completely nonchalant. She said airily, "That’s right. Two million."
"Sonia." Evan Yates shot up from the sofa, pointing in disbelief at the bank card in Felix Preston’s hand. "You have two million on this card?"
"I do," Sonia Quincy affirmed softly.
"..."
The room suddenly fell silent. The three men all wore different expressions, but for a moment, none of them spoke.
To Sonia Quincy, their silence felt like doubt. She immediately pulled out her phone, opened a bank text showing her account balance, and shoved the screen in Felix Preston’s face.
"Check the last few digits of the card number, then take a look at my balance. See for yourself if I’m bluffing."
"..." Felix Preston did as she said with a wooden expression. After a long moment, he handed the phone back to Sonia Quincy, his expression still blank.
Sonia Quincy was smiling, and the confidence in her eyes was so dazzling it left his mind a little blank.
"Oh my god, she’s actually loaded." From the rigid set of Felix Preston’s back, Evan Yates could already tell that Sonia Quincy wasn’t bluffing.
The bank card in his hand suddenly felt very heavy. Felix Preston’s Adam’s apple bobbed with a difficult swallow. It was a while before he found his voice.
"Sonia, where did you get this much money?"
