Chapter 118: Chapter 119: Willow Quincy Can’t Wake Up
"Tell me. Why?" Felix Preston gazed into Sonia Quincy’s eyes, patiently coaxing her to voice the answer.
"Why did you want to die with me? Why didn’t you want to live without me?"
Sonia Quincy’s red lips parted. Despite her shyness, Felix Preston’s coaxing had brought the answer to the tip of her tongue.
"Because..."
"Serves him right! I hope he never wakes up!"
Lynn Preston’s voice, filled with anger and resentment, suddenly rang out from the doorway, shattering the romantic atmosphere between them in an instant.
Sonia Quincy snapped back to reality and pushed Felix Preston away as if she’d been burned, quickly retreating.
Felix Preston gripped her hand tightly, and the second she pulled away, he forcefully pulled her back.
"Running away?" The corners of Felix Preston’s eyes crinkled as a mischievous smile played on his lips. "We’re a legally married couple. Isn’t it perfectly normal for us to sit a little closer?"
"I..." Sonia Quincy stammered, her face flushing crimson.
Fighting through the pain, Felix Preston lay back on the bed. His large hand enveloped Sonia Quincy’s smaller one as he raised an eyebrow and smiled. "You run off the second someone shows up. Is there something shameful about being with me?"
"Sit here and keep me company. You’re not going anywhere."
Sonia Quincy lowered her head. "Oh."
"Bro! You’re awake!"
Lynn Preston pushed open the door and practically ran to Felix Preston’s bedside.
"Bro, you’re finally awake! You have no idea how scared I’ve been these past few days." She crouched beside Sonia Quincy, her eyes turning red before she could even finish her sentence.
"What’s there to be scared of?" Felix Preston released Sonia Quincy’s hand and, with some difficulty, raised his arm to pat Lynn Preston’s head. "Your big bro here cheated death. My luck’s holding strong."
"Hmph..." Lynn Preston’s lip trembled, and she burst into tears. "How can you be in the mood to joke? You have no idea how worried sick we’ve all been."
"The fact that he can joke is a good thing. It proves your brother is completely out of danger." Sonia Quincy helped Lynn Preston to her feet and wiped the tears from her face.
"No more tears. Pull up a chair and sit down."
Rubbing her eyes, Lynn Preston nodded. As always, she listened to Sonia Quincy. "Okay."
"What were you saying earlier?" Felix Preston picked up a tissue from the bed and handed it to her, asking curiously, "Something about ’serves him right’ and ’never wakes up’? Who are you talking about?"
Lynn Preston folded the tissue into a small square and carefully dabbed away the remaining tears on her cheeks, trying not to ruin her freshly applied makeup.
"Willow Quincy. It’s quite the coincidence, actually. The same day you were hospitalized for your car crash, he was admitted to the ER in this very hospital for some illness. And what do you know? Maybe it’s karma for all the bad things he’s done, but he’s been in a coma ever since he got out of the ER. Still no signs of waking up."
Hearing this, Felix Preston instinctively glanced at Sonia Quincy. Her head was lowered, her long lashes obscuring whatever emotion was in her eyes.
He couldn’t make out her expression, but he was certain she knew something.
"Sonia?" he called softly, taking her hand again.
"Yes?" Sonia Quincy looked up at him, her gaze icy.
Felix Preston smiled at her but said nothing. Instead, he continued questioning Lynn Preston, "How do you know Willow Quincy hasn’t woken up?"
"Heh..." Lynn Preston let out a gloating laugh. "Willow Quincy’s room is on the same floor as yours. I just saw the Quincy Family talking to a doctor as I was getting out of the elevator. I don’t know what the doctor said, but whatever it was, they all started crying right after."
"Willow Quincy’s mom was wailing the loudest. She was crying and yelling, ’Oh, my poor son! When is he going to wake up? Are you doctors even competent? If you can’t help him, I’ll transfer him to another hospital!’"
As she spoke, Lynn Preston gave a helpless shrug. "His mom was so loud, it would have been hard *not* to overhear."
"Hmph," Felix Preston let out an inscrutable snort, but said nothing.
Sonia Quincy knew he didn’t want to hear Willow Quincy’s name, so she changed the subject. "Lynn, play that recording for your brother."
"No need." Felix Preston patted her hand. "Evan Yates already sent me the recording. I listened to it a couple of times over lunch. I’ve more or less figured things out."
"And what do you think?" she asked, looking at him.
He raised an eyebrow, his tone even. "I think what Milly said is probably true. Yvette Fuller wasn’t lying to her."
"Mm-hmm." Sonia Quincy nodded in agreement.
But Lynn Preston was confused. "Bro, how can you be sure Yvette Fuller wasn’t lying to Milly?"
Felix Preston’s lips twitched. "First, Yvette Fuller let it slip accidentally when she was drunk. She didn’t reveal it to Milly while sober under the guise of gossiping or just venting. That makes it highly unlikely she did it on purpose."
"Second, when Milly started at Azure Studio, none of Liam Joyce’s people knew about her connection to you. Therefore, Yvette Fuller would have had no reason to tell her that story on purpose."
"Oh..." Lynn Preston understood now.
"Ugh." She smacked her forehead, complaining in frustration, "There’s been so much going on lately, my brain feels fried. I can’t believe I couldn’t figure out something so simple."
"It’s alright," Sonia Quincy said, patting her shoulder with a comforting smile.
She shook her head in resignation and sighed as she rose from her chair. "Forget it. I’ll leave the thinking to you guys from now on. My brain’s feeling a little slow right now."
With that, she gave Sonia Quincy a wave and turned to walk toward the door.
"Lynn, where are you going?" Sonia Quincy asked, confused.
Lynn Preston grabbed her shoulder bag from the table and listlessly slung it on. Her voice was heavy with exhaustion. "Liam Joyce is making me go out for another business dinner. I have to get going."
Felix Preston: "Be safe. Call me if anything happens."
Lynn Preston flashed an "OK" sign over her shoulder. "Got it!"
...
Sonia Quincy hadn’t breathed a word of her revenge plan to Felix Preston. So, when Renee Sinclair contacted her with the items she’d requested, Sonia had to sneak out of the room under the pretext of mailing a package.
The hospital entrance was bustling with people, but Sonia Quincy spotted the paper-thin Renee Sinclair in a single glance.
Renee Sinclair seemed in slightly better spirits than a few days ago, but she still looked completely drained.
"Too many people here. Let’s talk in my car." Renee Sinclair waved the manila envelope in her hand, successfully luring Sonia Quincy into her vehicle.
"I’ve only managed to get two of the items you were looking for. They’re both in here."
Once in the car, Renee Sinclair handed the envelope directly to Sonia Quincy. Sonia Quincy tested its weight in her hand and frowned. "It’s this light?"
Renee Sinclair: "Of course it’s light. It’s just a few photos."
