Chapter 101: Chapter 101: She’ll Pay for Her Own Husband’s Treatment

Felix Preston was severely injured and rushed into the emergency room the moment he arrived at the hospital.

This was too big to hide from the Preston Family. As soon as Felix’s emergency treatment began, Sonia Quincy quickly called Lynn Preston and asked her to come to the hospital.

Lynn Preston didn’t come alone. Unsurprisingly, Liam Joyce was with her.

"Sonia!" Lynn Preston ran over, sobbing as she threw herself at Sonia Quincy. "Sonia, how’s my brother? How badly is he hurt?"

Sonia Quincy’s face was deathly pale, and her voice trembled. "He’s still in surgery. The doctor said... he’s lost a lot of blood and has gone into temporary shock. But thankfully, the hospital’s blood bank has a sufficient supply. They’ve already taken some in."

"...How could this happen..." Lynn Preston completely broke down. She grabbed Sonia Quincy’s arm and began to sink to her knees, wailing, "How could my brother get hurt so badly...? Sonia, what do I do? What are we going to do...?"

"Lynn." Sonia Quincy, heavily pregnant, found it awkward to try and help her up.

Seeing this, Liam Joyce quickly stepped forward and pulled Lynn Preston into his arms. "Lynn, don’t panic. Calm down first. Mr. Preston is a good man—he’ll pull through. I’m sure he’ll be fine."

"I can’t calm down!" Lynn Preston struggled in Liam Joyce’s arms. "That’s my brother, my own brother! How do you expect me to calm down?!"

"Lynn!" Liam Joyce turned her around, his large hands firmly cupping her face, forcing her to look up at him.

"Lynn, things have already come to this. You have no choice but to be calm! Your brother is still in surgery. Instead of crying and making a scene, you should wait quietly with your sister-in-law for him to come out. Your sister-in-law is pregnant. Do you have the heart to make her worry about you on top of worrying about your brother?"

"...Sob..." Through her tear-blurred eyes, a pitiful and broken Lynn Preston shook her head in Liam Joyce’s hands. "But that’s my brother... I really don’t know how to be calm..."

"Lynn..." Her words made Liam Joyce’s eyes sting, and his previous firmness crumbled in an instant.

He wiped away Lynn Preston’s tears, then pulled her into a firm embrace. He gently patted her back with one hand and caressed her cheek with the other. "There, there, Lynn. Let’s cry for a little while and then pull ourselves together, okay? Your sister-in-law is pregnant; she needs you to look after her."

Lynn Preston was crying too hard to speak clearly, her words trembling. "Okay, okay... I... I’ll take good care of Sonia..."

Liam Joyce lowered his head, resting his chin on her forehead and rubbing it affectionately. "Good. I knew you were the best, the most understanding."

Lynn Preston clutched his expensive suit jacket, her sobbing subsiding into silence.

The two of them held each other tightly, like a pair of lovers in the throes of passion.

Sonia Quincy stood to the side, one hand on her belly, coldly watching the pained expression on Liam Joyce’s face. After a moment, she felt disgusted, rolled her eyes, and looked away, sitting back down on the metal bench outside the emergency room.

...

"Sonia."

After crying for over ten minutes, Lynn Preston finally calmed down. She pushed away from Liam Joyce’s embrace and walked over to Sonia Quincy, wiping her tears as she sat down.

"Sonia, I’m sorry. I’ve caused you trouble."

"It’s fine." Sonia Quincy patted the back of her hand, in no mood to be bothered by it.

Lynn Preston said, "Sonia, I haven’t told Mom about this yet. I was thinking... we should wait until my brother is out of the ER safe and sound, and then we can tell her gently."

"Okay." Sonia Quincy nodded. "Mom is getting older; she couldn’t handle a shock like this. If we tell her after Felix Preston is out and okay, she won’t be so scared."

Lynn Preston: "Mhm!"

"By the way, Sonia, this is my direct supervisor I mentioned, Mr. Joyce. If he hadn’t driven me here, I’d probably still be stuck in traffic."

This introduction was rather unnecessary, as Sonia Quincy was the first among them to know who Liam Joyce was. But to keep up the act, Lynn Preston had to go through the motions.

"Oh..." Sonia Quincy feigned surprise. "So you’re Mr. Joyce."

Hearing this, Liam Joyce stepped forward and extended his hand to Sonia Quincy. "Hello, Mrs. Preston. I’m the general manager of Apex Design and Lynn’s direct supervisor, Liam Joyce."

Sonia Quincy glanced at his outstretched hand and reluctantly raised her own for a brief shake. "Hello, Mr. Joyce. A pleasure to meet you. Thank you for being willing to help our Lynn."

Liam Joyce smiled warmly. "You’re too kind, Mrs. Preston. Lynn is the employee I admire most. It’s only right that I help her."

"Mhm." Sonia Quincy didn’t want to talk to him any further. After a perfunctory response, she said, "Please, have a seat, Mr. Joyce."

So Liam Joyce naturally sat down next to Lynn Preston.

"Brother! Brother!"

"Willow, you have to be okay!"

From the other end of the corridor, the wails of the Quincy Family suddenly rang out.

Sonia Quincy’s lips twitched into a brief smirk. She cursed maliciously in her heart, ’Willow Quincy, you’d better die in that operating room.’

But things didn’t go as she wished. Not only did Willow Quincy not die, but she was wheeled out of the emergency room at the same time as Felix Preston.

Felix Preston’s life had been saved, but he remained in a coma.

"The patient’s condition has stabilized. Now, do you want him in a private room for easier observation, or will a regular ward do?"

The attending physician took off his mask and asked, looking Sonia Quincy in the eye.

Sonia Quincy didn’t hesitate. "A private room! Give him the best treatment available!"

The doctor nodded. "Alright, we’ll make the arrangements now."

"One of you... could someone go down to the main hall to pay the fees?"

"I’ll go." Liam Joyce volunteered for the task of paying, turning to leave before Lynn Preston could refuse.

"There’s no need, Mr. Joyce." Sonia Quincy called out to stop him. "He’s my husband. I’ll pay for his treatment."

"Mrs. Preston..." Liam Joyce paused, unwilling to pass up this chance to make a good impression. "I’ll handle the payment. You and Lynn can stay here and take care of the admission procedures."

"No need." Sonia Quincy was adamant. She grabbed her bag from the metal bench, walked past Liam Joyce, and headed straight on.

"Mr. Joyce." Lynn Preston tugged on Liam Joyce’s sleeve, her eyes full of sympathy as she watched Sonia Quincy’s retreating back. She whispered, "Let my sister-in-law go."

"Alright." Liam Joyce was helpless but had to agree.

Even late at night, the hospital was still busy. Sonia Quincy stood in front of the elevator for a full five minutes before a less crowded one arrived.

Perhaps it was true that you always cross paths with your enemies. Just as she stepped into the elevator and was about to close the doors, Cecilia Quincy came rushing over on her high heels.

The elevator doors, halfway closed, opened again. Cecilia Quincy gave Sonia Quincy a startled glance, then stepped inside and pressed the close button.

The emergency room was on the ninth floor. By the time the elevator descended to the fifth, the three strangers inside had all gotten off.

Suddenly, only Cecilia Quincy and Sonia Quincy were left in the confined space.

Cecilia Quincy straightened her hair and asked with a blank expression, "What are you doing here?"
