Chapter 649: Chapter 647: Bad Luck by Association

Mrs. Gu had a million questions for her second son, but when she looked up and saw how worried he was, she couldn’t bring herself to ask. Instead, she said, "Jingtai, don’t worry. This is Lanlan’s second time giving birth. She’ll be fine."

Hearing his mother’s words, Second Brother Gu didn’t relax at all. The worry on his face only deepened.

He was deeply worried about his wife, but he still nodded mechanically. "Yes. Thanks, Mom."

When Mrs. Li saw how much her son-in-law doted on her daughter, her face broke into a wide smile, even though she was just as worried on the inside.

She walked over to her son-in-law and said reassuringly, "Don’t you worry, Jingtai. We’re all here waiting for Lanlan. She’ll be fine. Just wait, she’ll give you a big, healthy baby boy."

Second Brother Gu nodded, but his expression remained grim. His eyes were fixed on the door to the delivery room.

A moment later, he said gravely, "Mom, it really doesn’t matter if it’s a boy or a girl. After this one, we’re done having children."

"Well, Jingtai... you should still have a son, shouldn’t you?" Hearing her son-in-law say they were done having children, Mrs. Li was stunned.

’Just how much does my son-in-law love my daughter? But it’s not good to go without a son, is it?’ she thought, glancing awkwardly at Mrs. Gu.

Mrs. Gu, however, said matter-of-factly, "Jingtai is right. Whether it’s a boy or a girl, two is enough. Of course they shouldn’t have any more. Just look at how much our Lanlan is suffering right now!"

"..." Mrs. Li was so moved by Mrs. Gu’s words that she was speechless. ’Still,’ she thought to herself, ’I’ll have to convince my daughter to have a son later.’

’The Gu Family’s business is so successful now. How could they possibly not have a son to inherit it?!’

Hearing the conversation between his wife and Mrs. Gu, Mr. Li felt a pang of emotion. He had doted on his daughter, raising her like a precious jewel. How could he bear to see her suffer?

But he also knew that his daughter wanted a son herself. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have tried for a second child so soon.

He just hoped this baby would be a big, healthy boy. A daughter and a son—it was the perfect combination.

Time ticked by, second by agonizing second. The hospital corridor was eerily quiet as everyone stared in silence at the tightly closed door, their eyes filled with unspoken anxiety.

After what felt like an eternity, the door finally opened. A nurse emerged, holding a newborn baby.

She said with a smile, "The mother is doing well. It’s a big, healthy boy!"

At this news, both the Gu and Li families began to weep with joy. Tears streamed down Mr. Li’s face.

He said excitedly to his wife, "Your wish came true! I knew our Lanlan was a fortunate girl."

Mrs. Li was too happy to care that her husband was stating the obvious. She reached out and squeezed his hand.

She said softly, "Yes, Old Li. Our wish finally came true. And Lanlan won’t have to go through this again.

I can’t believe our daughter was carrying a son this time! I’m so, so happy. Jingtai is really something else."

"You’re too kind," Mrs. Gu said. "Lanlan is the one who did all the hard work! Come, come see our grandson."

Mrs. Gu happily took the baby from the nurse’s arms and called out to Mr. and Mrs. Li.

"Congratulations, Jingtai," Mrs. Li said, a relieved smile on her face and her eyes welling up. She looked around for her son-in-law.

When she saw her son-in-law rush eagerly into the delivery room, she quietly tugged on her husband’s hand and gestured for him to look. The couple exchanged a knowing smile.

As for Gu Jingtai, he didn’t even spare a glance for his son. He ran straight into the delivery room to see his wife.

A joyful smile spread across his face as he reached out and touched Li Xiulan’s shoulder.

He said softly, "Lanlan, thank you. This time, it’s a son."

Li Xiulan’s face was pale as she sat propped up weakly in bed. She looked at the smile on her husband’s face.

A sense of contentment filled her. She smiled and said in a low voice, "You silly man. He’s the fruit of our love. It wasn’t hard at all. Who does our son look like?"

"Oh! I haven’t even seen him yet. I just wanted to see you, to see if you were exhausted. Lanlan, I’ll take good care of you and the baby. Please don’t fall asleep, okay? The doctor said you’re not supposed to sleep yet."

A gentle light shone in Second Brother Gu’s eyes as he looked at his wife, his face filled with happiness and profound love.

Li Xiulan opened her eyes, a faint smile on her lips. She reached out her right hand to touch her husband’s handsome face, but exhaustion quickly claimed her and her eyes fluttered shut again.

Seeing his wife pass out, Second Brother Gu frantically called for a doctor to check on her.

Seeing how anxious Second Brother Gu was, Geng Susu felt a pang of envy. Nevertheless, she patiently performed a check-up on Li Xiulan.

She said in a warm voice, "She’s perfectly healthy, just exhausted. Let her sleep for a while. There’s no need to worry."

He let out a sigh of relief, hearing that his wife’s life wasn’t in danger. "Thank you, Do... Doctor Geng."

"You’re welcome. Your wife needs plenty of rest after giving birth. You should go get some rest yourself. You haven’t slept in over a day. Look at the dark circles under your eyes."

’Geng Susu was right. He had been working day and night for the past two days, all so he could free up time to be with his wife.’

’He already had dark circles like a panda, but he didn’t feel it was a hardship at all.’

’In fact, his heart was full of a sweet warmth.’ After thanking Geng Susu again, he sat back down by his wife’s bedside.

Geng Susu glanced at Second Brother Gu, then left the room without another word.

Seeing how devoted Second Brother Gu and the entire Gu Family were to Li Xiulan, she couldn’t help but sigh. ’Li Xiulan is so lucky,’ she thought.

Just as Geng Susu got downstairs, a black car suddenly pulled up in front of her. The window rolled down slowly.

Revealing Gu Jinghua’s handsome features. Geng Susu asked in surprise, "What are you doing here? Are you here to see your sister-in-law?"

"What’s wrong with my sister-in-law?" Eldest Brother Gu asked with a smile. "Why are you so surprised to see me? Can’t I have come looking for you?"

Geng Susu froze for a second, then it dawned on her. She smiled and explained, "Your sister-in-law just gave birth to a big, healthy boy."

"Really? In that case, could I trouble you to take me to see my parents?" Eldest Brother Gu said, his face breaking into a wide grin.

Geng Susu’s eyes widened. "Why do you need me to take you?"

"You don’t want to?" Eldest Brother Gu glanced at Geng Susu, taking in her dumbfounded expression.

He turned to look out the window at the pedestrians passing by, a flicker of sadness in his eyes.

’Eldest Brother Sheng was about to become a father. He had specifically sought him out for a talk, telling him that Geng Susu liked him and that he should seize the opportunity instead of wallowing in the past.’

’He’d also said that anyone who got involved with Sheng Yueyue was bound for misfortune. Sheng Shiwen had been obsessed with avenging Sheng Yueyue...’

’...and in the end, his wife couldn’t take it anymore and left him, taking their son with her.’

’In the end, he was driven mad by it all—truly mad. After all, Sheng Shiwen had loved Dong Lili for over a decade.’

’Eldest Brother Sheng had said all that, probably thinking he was just being stubborn about not wanting to marry. But the truth was, he had gotten over his adopted sister two years ago.’

’He had poured all his energy into designing electronics. If Eldest Brother Sheng hadn’t come to talk to him, he would have completely forgotten about things like getting married and starting a family.’
