Chapter 398: Chapter 398: Don’t Cry, Hold It Back

’That’s Qin Jiqun’s voice.’

As Qin Jiao walked into the courtyard, she saw her third uncle, Qin Jiqun, pestering her father, Qin Zhonghui, just as she’d expected. Normally at this hour, Mr. Du would be sitting in the rocking chair, teasing the myna bird under the eaves. But now, the old man wasn’t there. The rocking chair swayed, the birdcage was empty, and the clever, talking myna had long since vanished.

Qin Jiao frowned and stepped inside. The moment Qin Jiqun saw her, his face lit up with a saccharine smile. "Ah, Xiao Jiao, you’re back from school? How are things? Is studying hard?"

He was certainly laying it on thick.

But Qin Jiao knew exactly what he was after. "Uncle," she said, "what are you doing here?"

"What kind of question is that? This is my niece’s home. Why wouldn’t I be allowed to visit?"

"Oh, so you *do* remember I’m your niece? If I recall correctly, it wasn’t too long ago that you were trying to trade that same niece for a new wife, were you?"

The smile on Qin Jiqun’s face instantly froze.

Seeing his daughter had returned, Qin Zhonghui, who was standing nearby, let out a sigh of relief. "I just came back at noon to make lunch for Mr. Du," he explained. "Right after we ate, your uncle showed up with Xiao Tao."

Qin Jiao instantly understood everything. Ignoring the fawning Qin Jiqun, she began searching every room. Sure enough, she found Xiao Tao in her bedroom, messing with her computer!

The little terror was banging on the computer. Half-eaten pieces of fruit were scattered on the floor, and he was clutching a piece of chocolate, his mouth smeared with it.

"Qin Tao, get out here now!" Qin Jiao strode forward, grabbed Xiao Tao by the ear, and started dragging him out of the room.

Xiao Tao immediately started squealing like a stuck pig.

But Qin Jiao paid him no mind. The little brat was asking for it. She’d give him a beating every time she saw him, and no amount of pleading could stop her.

Just as she was thinking this, she slapped him across the face.

She dragged him to the doorway and shoved him out. Qin Jiqun came running over in a panic. Xiao Tao, a classic bully who preyed on the weak and feared the strong, immediately clung to his father and began to wail.

Qin Jiao said coldly, "Stuff it! If you cry again, I’ll hit you again!"

Xiao Tao instantly stopped crying, but he kept hiccupping as snot and tears streamed down his face.

Qin Jiqun’s heart ached for his son, who was the apple of his eye. "Xiao Jiao, what is wrong with you?" he said. "How can you, the older sister, hit your little brother?"

He paused. He knew his son had probably done something to upset Qin Jiao, and he needed to stay on her good side if he wanted to find a job. So, he softened his tone. "Whatever he did wrong, you’re his older sister. A good scolding would have been enough."

Qin Jiao stood there, her expression cold. "Scolding is useless. He broke my computer. That computer cost over seven thousand. So, Uncle, you tell me. What should we do about this?"

The moment Qin Jiqun heard "over seven thousand," his knees went weak. He turned and slapped his son. "You little brat! Why did you have to go and touch your sister’s computer? Grabbing some snacks and drinks is one thing, but why can’t you keep your hands to yourself!"

’So it’s okay to just take other people’s food and drinks whenever you want?’ The remark made Qin Jiao’s skin crawl.

Qin Jiao said, "Uncle, have you forgotten what kind of person Feng Lan’s brother, Feng Dayong, is? He started by stealing little things as a kid, and now he robs houses. Is that the path you want Xiao Tao to go down?"

"That’s not what I..."

"Enough. I’m not going to argue. You two just arrived in North City today, right? Go back to your guesthouse and get some rest. We can have a proper discussion about the seven thousand in compensation tomorrow."

Qin Jiqun gave a forced laugh. "Xiao Jiao, we’re family. Can’t we just forget about the seven thousand?"
