Chapter 9: Episode 009: A Vegetarian

Was it that easy?

’Wait, that isn’t the main problem here?!’

Why the fuck is my heart beating?

Electricity danced between them as if the whole world were drowning around them. Their breaths mixed to form a cloud of tension between them. His eyes raked her face, and her heart couldn’t stop drumming in anticipation.

She was fatally attracted to this snake. And now she was starting to think perhaps she was never normal to start with.

The last time she had remembered wanting something with someone so much was back in high school when she had a crush on the class president, tall, handsome, and made it so hard to breathe when he was standing a foot away from her.

She found it hard even to speak when he spoke to her.

She would stutter, make a mess and run away, only to go home and cry to her father about how mean her crush was to her, when she was the one who found it hard to speak.

At least with the class president, she hadn’t been carrying his child at the time.

"What were you doing?" The words slithered out as he dropped his gaze to the stuff on the table, and then back at her. She snapped out of it immediately and turned to look at all the ingredients she bought from the system shop.

And then it clicked in her mind.

How do I explain it to him?

"I don’t remember buying these. Where did you get them from?" He picked up the pack of meat and then slammed it back on the table.

Words dried in Rue’s mouth; she thought of what to say.

What should I tell him? Did I get it from the system?

Caius raised an eyebrow but didn’t say anything and just waited for her to wander. It wasn’t like he was intruding, but he couldn’t stay away from listening to her thoughts.

Maybe from the gods?

He chuckled internally, rolling his eyes.

She finally decided and then cleared her throat before tossing him a look. "I got it from the gods; they decided to reward me for being a good rabbit."

He finally couldn’t hold it any longer and chuckled, patting her hair.

"Then I should thank the gods for rewarding my mate. What are you going to cook?" He asked, while Rue pouted and fixed her hair, knowing very well he was being sarcastic. She decided she was going to look for a better life.

[It’s not good to lie to your partner, Host.]

Do you want to be his partner?

[...]

I thought so.

She wiggled out of his grasp and missed the scowl on his face from that single action, and then she properly faced the small stove. She would have preferred a gas cooker, but they didn’t have such things here, so she was going to do it the traditional way.

She studied the stove and was actually amazed. It was a stove that didn’t require you to manually start a fire with your hands, and just light it with a match. The rope inside the stove smelled of pine, but dead pine.

Her eyes lit up.

The stove was square-shaped, with a rounded top, pot stands, and five ropes jutting out. This made Rue’s eyes light up like stars. It was the first time she was seeing something like this, and she was crazy about using it.

Before the hospital, she had cooked every single day. Different appliance every week. It had been a thing. She had not thought about that in a long time.

Now she couldn’t wait to put that to good use. ƒreewebɳovel.com

"We are going to have rice and braised beef!" She cheered as she gave him a thumbs-up. Caius smiled and gave her a weak thumbs-up back.

He would do anything to make her remain like this.

While she went about the kitchen, starting to set things up as if this wasn’t the first time she was using his stuff, Caius felt out of place.

He scratched the back of his neck as she was here and there, getting what she might want to use.

She is really a rabbit.

Even the way she moves is definitely like them, how her nose would twitch from smelling new things, and how her eyes would light up when she thought of something.

Caius would let her do whatever she wanted in his home if he were to watch her.

He watched as she leaned against the wood, trying to get something from the cabinet. She was so short and small that she was trying to hop for it, he chuckled, rolling his eyes.

She could at least ask for help.

He slithered closer to her and lengthened on his base, stretching his arm. "What do you want to get?" He asked, and she flushed pink, her eyes widened like saucers.

Her heart rate spiked up, and her brain lagged.

He is behind me! How did he get so close! He is so tall! What do I do?!

Caius chuckled, put down his hand and tapped against the wood, and she jerked at the sound. Her cheeks were turning pink from embarrassment.

I paced out!

"I was asking what you wanted, Rue." His voice sounded deep and hoarse, and she gulped.

"T-the col-lander?" She whispered in a soft voice, he smiled and quickly picked it up and placed it in front of her on the wooden table, she hiccuped, and he moved back, putting some distance between them.

Rue missed the warmth almost immediately.

He was so warm...

Immediately, the thought came; she pushed it down and then slapped her cheeks!

No! You cannot!

She grabbed the colander and turned around to find him looking at her in shock. She giggled awkwardly and decided she was going to ignore him, only for him to follow her, helping her when she couldn’t do some things.

At some point, she paused and faced him. "What do you want?" She asked, her eyes narrowed and bored.

He scratched the back of his head and gave her a weak smile. "Do you need some help?" Her eyes widened, and then she realised something.

Why did I sound like that?

’Of course he would want to help.’

What was I thinking?

Her breath quickened, and her gaze began to swish left and right as she began to think about what she was doing. She was never used to people being around her in the hospital, so she forgot that she and her mother usually cooked together.

How could I forget that?

I---

A large palm dropped on her head. "You are okay." Her gaze snapped to him as his warm gaze welcomed her, and then the warmth dropped as he widened his eyes.

Gods, I responded to her thoughts?!

He quickly dropped his arm, and her gaze followed it. He was about to move away when she suddenly stopped him in his tracks. When he looked down, he found her small hand grabbing his.

Then he looked at her; she was looking back at him, her pink eyes staring at him.

CUTENESS OVERLOAD!!!!

His heart raced so fast that he found it hard to breathe.

"Your hands are so big," she murmured as she studied them, before looking at him again. "You can help me chop the vegetables."

And with that, they were back to the kitchen.

Rue’s first try with the stove failed, as the smoke blew up in her face and Caius ended up laughing at her. To pay him back, she rubbed the smoke on his face and burst out laughing.

The second trial went better.

Within an hour and some minutes, the food was ready, and Rue was starving. Facing the meat that was wafting with a lot of delicious scent, her stomach growled.

She turned to face Caius. "Don’t they look good?"

"They look delicious," Caius answered truthfully, not even looking at the food but at Rue. She pressed her lips into a thin line and decided to worry about herself.

"You can dig in, Rue. What’s stopping you--" before Caius could keep speaking, she punched a wooden fork into the meat and brought it to her lips, without wasting time, she devoured the whole slice, munching as her face changed expression every second.

From bliss, to surprise, to joy, to tears and then finally bliss.

"Iwt twaste swoh gwooooodddddd"

Caius swallowed and decided to look away as he ran a hand down his face. But the next minute, Rue, who was enjoying her meal perfectly and had even swallowed the beef, suddenly ran to the bathroom.

She threw up all the contents in her stomach into the wash bowl and slumped on the floor, not feeling good.

Her nose was scrunched in disgust, and her face was pale.

[Sorry to inform you now, Host.]

[Host cannot eat meat. Only Veggies.]

Her eyes snapped open from their dazed state, and then she screamed in shock. "WHAT?!!!!!!!"

It was so loud that even the birds outside the cave scrambled away from the noise. Caius rushed in the next minute, and immediately she saw him, she burst out in tears.

"Wuuu..."

Fear consumed him just as much as worry gripped his heart and tightened it. He looked around for anything that might have been the reason she was crying, but apart from the messy wash bowl, there was nothing.

Was she sick or something?

"Why are you crying, little bunny?" He softly asked as he combed her hair back with his large hand.

"Wuuuu..." She continued to cry into his embrace, and Caius was confused because he didn’t know what to do or how to solve whatever had happened. The food she tasted was good, so why did she throw up?

He scooped her into his arms and tried his best to calm her, but she wouldn’t budge as she kept on crying.

He rocked her, but nothing worked. The last time he had done that was when he helped Queen Tanith stop Gianna from crying. Now his mate was crying in his arms, and he didn’t know what to do.

But it was not because she couldn’t stop crying. Rue herself didn’t understand why she was crying.

Stop crying, goddamnit!

She tried to stop crying, but she couldn’t; she felt like shit. But that all changed when she heard slithering movement from the entrance, as quick as anything, she shifted into a bunny, ran and hid behind a thick coil. freewёbnoνel.com

A large green snake appeared in front of them and then transformed into a beautiful woman.

"Caiiii, it’s me!"
